The Bull's Head: Summer's here at last

General

  • Herstmonceux pub site alongside the 1066 Country Walk
  • Varied food menu made emphasising fresh local produce
  • Secluded setting; campfires allowed

The Bull’s Head… that doesn’t sound like a campsite, does it? In fact, it sounds more like a… pub.

But, happily for those who like to combine their beers with their breaks using the least effort possible, the Bull’s Head is both. Based in East Sussex at Herstmonceux (try saying that after a couple of pints), this site is both more secluded and quiet than you’d expect for being next to an imbibing emporium, and is listed as family-friendly. Which you might think rocks, rather…

Facilities at the site include a modern toilet block, a water standpipe and a chemical disposal point, and there’s no problem with cooking under the stars either as campfires are allowed in the pitching field.

For guests who’d rather get someone else to dish up dinner, plenty of pub grub options using mostly local produce can be had in the bar. You can even try and win a bottle of wine at the longstanding pub quiz on Monday nights: now there’s a reason to extend your weekend trip…

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The staff in the pub were really friendly - that makes a huge difference.

    Disliked:

Some of my group found the barking from the dog-training class in the next field annoying; I hardly noticed it!

There was some sort of loud party nearby. Not sure if it were a venue or house party but quite heavily disturbed sleep.

Great location for walks and very peaceful site.
Perfect location next to the pub
    Toilets cleaned frequently
Staff seemed happy and were helpful

    Disliked:

One toilet door was broken however, had been reported.
Fire wood and kindling was very expensive, it would be great if they could make a little pack up which other sites have done (i.e £10 for wood, a few bits of kindling and matches)
Would be great if the pub could sell a few camping essentials as there isn't a shop very close by

Informality and relaxed nature of the site, ease of booking and the friendly on-site staff and in The Bull's Head pub.
A nice small site offering good, clean facilities and clearly working hard to retain a deserved reputation as one of the best pub stop-over campsites in the area.
The Bull's Head is also a good, well-managed, pub with good beer and good food.
    Excellent staff too.

Right behind the pub. Plenty of room. Very friendly team. Good food, good beer, good wine. Tip, if you want evening sunshine, pitch on the other side of the field from the facilities.
    Local area is just lovely.

    Disliked:

The loo may struggle to cope if there was a large attendance. Same with the shower.

From the manager...

Thanks for your Comments....There are Three Loos and Three Showers...one is brand new...
also a new Washing Up Area....so plenty of facilities.

Local attractions

With something called the 1066 Country Walk running past the site, it’s not a huge stretch to guess that this is battlefield country…

The 1066 Battle Abbey and Battlefield site is nearby to relive that all-important day in English history when King Harold (allegedly) got something in his eye, while there are other battle-y relics in neighbouring Hastings which also has Europe's biggest beachside fishing fleet and smuggling adventures at St Clements Caves.

The 1066 route is just one of the many scenic walks in the surrounding countryside, or for day trips, Herstmonceux is recommended with its castle and the rural Herstmonceux Observatory Science Centre.

As well as walking, Sussex sightseers can take the Kent and East Sussex Railway to puff along from Tenterden through the countryside of the Rother Valley to Bodiam with its National Trust castle, or stay closer to home with a trip up (or down) Hastings’s cliff railway which has the UK's steepest funicular railway. Hang on tight…

For less adrenaline-fuelled sightseeing, options include a stroll along the nearby beaches – the seaside is just a short drive away – or a dander around Darwell Reservoir, surrounded by ancient woodland and the chance to spot woodpeckers and tawny owls.

Meanwhile, mini battlers will be more than happy with the abundance of attractions in the area aimed at the little people, from the Blue Reef Aquarium at Hastings to getting bug-eyed at the birds of prey at Hailsham’s Knockhatch Adventure Park.
