General

  • Back to basics farm camping under the South Downs
  • Clean facilities including a shower and flushing loos
  • Five minutes' walk from supplies and 10 minutes' drive from town

There’s something immensely satisfying about pitching a tent, building a campfire and lying back to gaze at the stars, all in the happy knowledge that this is how it’s been done since our early ancestors first discovered mammoths taste better when roasted over flames. Pass the barbecue tongs.

Guests getting back to basics surrounded by nature and forgetting about overflowing email boxes/underflowing bank accounts is the aim of June and co at the very popular Oakfield Farm Campsite, under the South Downs and at the head of the Cuckmere valley.

It’s a working farm with space to camp rather than a commercial campsite, so you won’t find kids’ clubs, a bar or evening entertainment – just basic farm camping with clean facilities, a very friendly owner, the occasional barn owl flitting past and loads of countryside space to gaze at over the campfire. Pass the marshmallows.

The pitches at Oakfield Farm are kept to the edge of the farm fields so guests have plenty of space and there’s loads of room for the kids to roam free range (all safely, as cars/vehicles are only allowed at the entrance field except for unloading).

If the thought of free-roaming kids of an early morn has made you shudder, Oakfield is usually able to use one field for families with kids and another for adults without, so slumber/early morning mania are both undisturbed. Canine campers with good manners are also welcome on site.

Oakfield is a back to basics site, with four simple flushing toilets (toilet rolls, hand wash and hand towels are provided), a small but adequately spaced electric shower with changing room and hot water hand wash basin, and two small but hot gas showers added in 2016.

Logs and kindling are for sale on site as well as small gas cylinders and barbecue packs (or before you arrive you can order sausages, bacon, burgers and steak from the owners, who sell their own or local meat). A catering trailer is on site too for hot and cold drinks, sweets, biscuits, locally sourced bacon and egg baps, burgers, chips and more from it varied menu. For other campfire supplies, the petrol station within five minutes’ walk has most of the essentials (beer, wine, barbecue bits) and bigger shops and supermarkets are about ten minutes’ drive away in Hailsham.

And if you want to teach the kids that no, milk is not only sourced from a carton in the supermarket, take your small sorts on Sundays to learn how to milk Pansy the cow. A crew of mischievous pigs are also around to meet, and it's sometimes possible to see the farm's miniature goats or visit the stables.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Proper old style camping, friendly , small site 02/06/2018

Freedom for kids to play as no cars allowed camping field. Campfires allowed and wood on sale from owners. Traditional camping, basic but relaxing and kids loved it. The facilities were cleaner than in some larger commercial sites we've stayed at previously ,my daughter who is a fussy 8 yr old used the showers and was happy with them and said they were 'lovely and warm'!

    Disliked:

Only downside was pub nearest the campsite has closed which was a shame but obviously not in the campsite owners control!

Lovely bank holiday weekend stay 29/05/2018

This is a nice, peaceful site and in a great location with basic facilities that do the job.

June is very nice and helpful. There is a little food van on site and you can buy the wood etc to have a real fire.

We had a great stay over the bank holiday and I would return.

    Disliked:

I understand the reasoning but found it a bit of a pain having to park quite so far away from where we were camping, although this isn't a major issue and I was made aware of this before we booked.

From the manager...

I am glad you enjoyed your stay
Cars next to campfires, children and dogs not very safe , we try and make it as safe as possible so that parents can relax and have a glass of wine not worrying about their children and dogs getting knocked down .

My kind of campsite - clean and friendly 21/05/2018

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom Margaret J. Confirmed

  • Liked:

The old fashioned nature of the campsite - plenty of room with room set aside in the middle of the field for fun and games. Dog friendly with cars kept off the campsite after tents are pitched. Also liked the little hot food van which provided us with bacon butties and tea for a surprisingly reasonable price - bacon was locally sourced and delicious!

    Disliked:

Nothing much to dislike - toilets are adequate and there are hot showers but don't come expecting a formal campsite with Butlins style facilities. This is a campsite for people who want a really pared back camping experience with just enough facilities to make it a bit more comfortable

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. I could not describe my campsite better .
Glad you enjoyed your stay and hopefully we will see you again very soon .
Look forward to it

Small family-friendly site with clean facilities. 29/08/2017

We found Oakfield Farm campsite to be a small and very family friendly site. The owner attends to cleaning the facilities twice everyday, and is happy to stop for a chat on her way past. The toilets and showers are basic but adequate and clean. There is no extra charge for facilities including phone charging, ice packs, maps of the local area. Bags of wood can be bought on site for a campfire, and there is a food van on site selling hot/cold food and drinks and snacks. There are plenty of off-road walks nearby. Tents are pitched around the edge of a field, leaving plenty of space in the middle for children to play while supervised.

Always love our stays here, it's friendly and all you need for a quiet break. Have been coming to June's for a few years now and stay in the pond field. Nice and quiet with views of the downs and lovely horses in the next field. Tried the showers and they're great, lovely and hot! New cafe bar coffee with fresh milk is lovely. Can't wait to come again next year. Keri & Jake.

Very large plot, so plenty of room between pitches and it's a huge field so you're not disturbed by fellow campers.
The addition of the two new showers is a bonus.
A welcoming reception from June, the owner, who's always around to assist in any way she can.

    Disliked:

Great place to camp, I like the rule on no cars on the campsite except for loading. I struggled getting my tent pitched but June was there to help me. She is one of the sweetest people I met in a long time and was very accommodating. I look forward to visiting again. They even have camp fires which really create a surreal atmosphere.

Local attractions

Oakfield Farm Campsite’s location in East Sussex makes it pretty well placed for seeing the best of Sussex east and west, the countryside and the coast, with walks, bike rides, country houses, gardens and cliffs all close by.

The South Downs National Park (Britain’s newest) and the chalk downland of the South Downs are also close by and popular with visitors for walking, horse-riding and mountain biking.

The 100-mile South Downs Way runs from Winchester in Hampshire to Eastbourne in East Sussex; if you prefer to pedal, the 14-mile Cuckoo Trail passes through Hailsham on its route from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park (bikes can be hired near the campsite).

Oakfield Farm is at the head of the Cuckmere Valley, a National Trust managed grass chalkland and wildlife haven with views towards the River Cuckmere and the Seven Sisters, the bright white chalk cliffs between Seaford and Eastbourne.

Look out for the Litlington white horse carved into the chalk cliff and for Devil’s Dyke, the longest and deepest dry valley in the country and called ‘the grandest view in the world’ by John Constable. Both spots are, of course, where you should bring a picnic.

Head for the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and its Ashdown Forest for another few picnic spots (you can walk it all off after): this former medieval hunting forest has cracking views of the chalk downs and is famously where Winnie the Pooh lived (apparently he's shy these days to visitors, but any excuse to bring honey on your picnic).

Start off at the Ashdown Forest Visitor Centre to see what’s what: this area is the biggest open access space in south-east England and has heaps to see including resident deer, rare species of birds and butterflies, plenty of forest walks and, er, a llama park.

Going coastwards, there are enough seaside and coastal spots to spend your holiday bucket and spading every day: Bexhill and Hastings to the east; the pier of Eastbourne and the beaches of Lewes within ten miles, and Brighton about 30–40 minutes away by car.

Halfway between Eastbourne and Brighton is Newhaven, where day trippers can pick up the ferry to France.
