General

  • Wildlife-packed park with foxes, deer and badgers
  • Coarse fishing ponds stocked with carp, roach, tench and perch
  • Shops, pubs and eateries within a mile

How might you fancy a peaceful break in a rural wildlife haven, with countryside views to the South Downs, spectacular westerly sunsets and a night under the stars around a campfire? Then Idle Hours could be the place for you.

Set on around three and a half acres, Idle Hours is an adults-only quiet site (strictly no groups and no noise after 11pm, please), with two attractive and peaceful coarse fishing ponds stocked with carp, roach, tench and perch. The site welcomes dogs, but please do keep them on leads while on site and remember to clean up after them.

Pitches are on gently sloping grass, and amenities include ladies' and gents toilets, a hot shower, a hot water washing-up area and a chemical disposal point. Fire baskets are available and logs and kindling are available for sale. Please note there is no mains electricity on site.

Despite its serene, pastoral surroundings, this site is very handy for shops, pubs and eateries, all about a mile and a half away.

Please note

Guests under the age of 25 are not allowed on site.

There is no mains electricity on site. Bring a torch!

Loved how laid back the place was. Very quiet (though it is autumn) and useful facilities. My favourite spot is "Cows".

This is a gem of a site.... From the moment we arrived, Julie and Paul were welcoming hosts, Julie explained how the campsite works insisting that the attitude was all about being chilled out and relaxed. Found a pitch, in fact apart from a couple who left later that day, we were the only tent on site until Saturday evening. The facilities, minimal although very well kept and more than adequate…Took a small walk through the wooded area at the rear of the campsite where the fishing ponds are located….. relaxing and well worth a visit to sit and take in the quietness….. The Fire pits are a great addition, plenty of dry logs and kindling can be purchased on site, they even supply dry newspapers to help get the fire going…. One thing we did like was the fact the local Indian Takeaway delivers to the site, which on the Saturday when it lashed it down, was welcoming. Hats of too Julie and Paul, nothing was a problem, they assisted us with all our requests …… a well, small, groomed and pleasant relaxing campsite and great value….. We cannot wait to go back next year Thanks

We booked a couple of hours before we arrived. We only live a few miles away but it was definitely worth it. Amazingly clean toilets and great washing up facilities. We didnt use the shower but it looked great. They hired out the fire baskets for free which was a real bonus. We could pitch where we liked and we had a view of the very cute sheep and a spectacular sunset. We were only there for one night. but it was a nice break.

The camp site is beautiful very peaceful. Nice pitches with ample space. Surroundings are stunning so picturesque. Fresh eggs available with an honesty tin from the farm next to the site tasted amazing for breakfast. The toilets are clean and comfortable. Lovely little touches dettol and air freshener available. Portaloo shower was something that worried me but it was also very clean hot and good pressure. Perfect little site with ample facilities washing up area etc. Julie and her husband are very friendly and approachable great knowledge of the local area and just very willing to help. Fire pits available for free which was a lovely touch for the chilly evenings. Remember your torches as it is very dark at night. Can’t wait to go back.

Julie at the campsite is a very lovely lady and very polite! She text to say we could choose any pitch and when I asked about fire wood I got a fast and helpful response. The woman’s toilets are the cleanest campsite toilets I’ve been too! With plenty of soap, air freshener, toilet roll and even dettol!

Absolutely everything about Idle Hours. This was our second visit in two weeks as when we first went there we fell in love with the place. The facilities on site are spotlessly clean and well maintained, the pitches are a very generous size and the owners Julie and Paul are lovely and friendly. I would recommend this site to anyone who wants to get away from everything and go back to nature as this place is so peaceful and with no mains electric is not spoilt by light pollution.

    Disliked:

Directions

From the A26 Uckfield, head north to Crowborough. Take the right turn 0.7 miles after The Crow and Gate pub signed to Millbrook Industrial Estate. Go straight on, over the golf course, over the small roundabout, down the hill and past the fish and chip shop, antiques shop and vets on the left, then after the Plough and Horses pub, go over the narrow bridge and turn immediately right to Hadlow Down Rd. The site is 1.2 miles on the right.

From Hadlow Down (A272), the site is 2.5 miles on the left on Crowborough/Jarvis Brook Road. Do not turn into Dogetts - this is a satnav error. The site is half a mile further up the hill on the left.

From Rotherfield-Crowborough Road B2100, take the Hadlow Down/Buxted Road (after Tesco). Go 0.25 miles and turn as indicated above.

Beware of the satnav error; do not turn into Doggetts Drive.

Local attractions

For those who fancy ditching the car for a bit, the site is close to public transport links: trains and buses from Crowborough (a mile and a half away) go to Tunbridge Wells, London, Lewes and Brighton.

Crowborough village has plenty of amenities, including an indoor swimming pool and gym, and a miniature railway. The area is great for golfers, with a number of courses nearby.

The spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells (to give it its full title) is eight miles from Owlsbury, and well worth a visit for a stroll round the specialist shops in the Georgian Pantiles, a taste of the water from the Chalybeate Spring, or a trip on the steam railway. The town also has plenty of food and entertainment options, including a multiplex cinema.

Other potential day trips include a jaunt to the coast at Eastbourne or Brighton; to Lewes, home to a castle, gardens and the biggest Bonfire Night celebrations in the country; the National Trust gardens at Sheffield Park and Wakehurst Place; the William Morris interiors at Standen; Ashdown Forest, home of Winnie the Pooh; or a steam through the Sussex countryside on the historic Bluebell Railway.
