General

  • Close to the beaches and dunes of Southport
  • Within easy reach of Liverpool and Blackpool; bus outside to Southport
  • Indoor heated pool with pool, licensed shop and 80 acres to wander

If you want to get to the beach from Riverside Holiday Park in Merseyside, just jump on the bus... Directly in front of the park is a bus stop with a daily half hour service straight into Southport – step off bus, find sands and sand dunes, spread blanket on sand, sorted. (You might also like to hear about the very lengthy pier at Southport too.)

And if you want to get to the museums and nightlife from Riverside Holiday Park, also jump on the bus: just across the road from the park is another bus stop with well-priced day tickets to the sights of Liverpool – step off bus, find museums, find nice old pub, sorted.

For the days mooching about on site in between beach bathing and city sightseeing, Riverside has 80 acres to wander over as well as a stream of facilities to investigate: a heated indoor pool with spa open from March to November; fishing on site (bring your rod licence); and the Riverside Bar and Cafe from which to contentedly contemplate the countryside.

There's also an modern play area for the kids (plus plenty of places for them to run around), a licensed shop, a launderette and a large area for exercising dogs. The toilet and shower blocks are centrally heated with free hot water, disabled facilities and baby changing.

This site is a member of Harrison Leisure UK group.

The site is being refurbished but it's going to be great!
Outdoor climbing area great for the younger two, flat tarmac areas for cycling and new water outdoor play area being constructed will be fabulous. Prices were superb and booked for October all ready. Nice families on site, not ..dare I say it ... rough. Lovely lodges for a special break. Plenty of caravans on hard standing.
Travelled with 6.10,15 yr olds they all loved it - pool great too!
Stacie, lovely lady at reception was very very helpful - allowed us to look at the lodges and caravans before booking the next holiday to ensure I was entirely happy with the accommodation. Couldn't have asked for more. All staff were very friendly and chatty and that made a difference to the break. Perfect location for Blackpool and Liverpool.

    Disliked:

The only thing I could mention - my parents in law joined us in their motor home, they were sited n the mobile area. The weather was really really awful for a couple of days and we saw a lot of towing caravans surrounded by water and awnings flooded.
I think possibly hard standing throughout and better drainage in that section for the mobile vehicles would make this site a perfect place for all!!
It's all being updated at the moment but will be fab.

Swimming pool was very good, never too crowded.Staff were very friendly and helpful. The playground was excellent.

    Disliked:

Too much traffic, it was very busy in the daytime with lorries and dumper trucks back and forth. You could'nt relax as there was a static over the road to us having decking put up and there was drilling and electric saws etc going all day from 8 o'clock in the morning.

The showers were fine except that they did'nt stay on for long enough, very annoying.

    The location is good.
The shop and cafe were convenient although a little high on price.
The toilets were not too far away.
    The pool is free.

    Disliked:

The fact most toilets were out of order. No matter which block you went to. Never mind updating the site for the new status you need to concentrate on your basic amenities.
The fact the touring pitches were not thought out enough should it rain as majority of them were flooded and looked to be on the season pitches. To which it made me feel very sad.
The pool was freezing due to a technical problem of the Jacuzzi and made it an unpleasant experience. The time given on the leaflet are not the actual times of the pool either. Very misleading. The staff that was on was very understanding of this.

The peace and quiet, surrounding countryside. But there was lots of disruption because of building work going on, this meant in some parts we were walking through mud to get on o the firm paths. Our pitch had water and electric hook up but no drainage for waste water. The pitches in front of the park did. The toilets and showers were not to my liking and the door to the male block was broken open. Most of the other toilet blocks were closed off because of the construction. The facilities in the park were great my grandson loved it. Drinks in the clubhouse were reasonable. I think when they have finished the renovations it will be an excellent site, but could have started work before the season started.

Local attractions

The Victorian town of Southport has been one of the most popular seaside destinations in the UK since the times of Queen Vic, when the population decided seaside holidays in the region were the way to go.

Highlights include the smashing sand dunes, which roll out all the way between Birkdale and Woodvale to the south – part of the dunes are a National Nature Reserve and the keen-eyed should see sand lizards and Natterjack toads.

In town, take a promenade or tram ride along Southport Pier, one of the longest in the country, then wander regally around the shops of tree-lined Lord Street – and did you know that Napoleon 3 once lived here...?

Southport's lovely Victoria Park is the venue of both the Southport Flower Show and the intriguing-sounding British Musical Fireworks Championships: if you're not around in August (for flowers) or October (for fireworks), roll along to the two bowling greens or the picnic spots aplenty. If it's a family theme you're after, you can go bowling, spend the day at Splash World or visit the theme park Pleasure Land and its rides to suit all ages.

Golfers go here too: Southport is the centre of England's 'Golf Coast' and home of Royal Birkdale Golf Club, once host to the Open Championship – several other courses are within 15 minutes' drive of town, so bring your clubs.

The Ribble Estuary edges Southport to the north and is very much worth a wander for wildlife fans, as it has a big wildfowl population in winter and is also a National Nature Reserve. Also nearby for nature lovers, the WWT's site at Marton Mere is fab for families with its play area and child-friendly events like den building, pond dipping, arts and crafts and canoe safaris.

And finally, take time in Liverpool, for attractions like the Museum of Liverpool and International Slavery Museum, the Beatles Museum, and the pubs and clubs around Concert Square and Mathew Street.
