General

  • Well-kept, landscaped pitch and wigwam park on the edge of Croston
  • Set out in green meadows with a well-tended garden and play area
  • Excellent location and surrounded by traditional pubs/restaurants

Score! Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park in England's north-west that's close to the sands at Southport, and within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool.

It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out park, with peaceful green meadows and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa. There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location near Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access.

Several reasonably-priced and family-friendly pubs and restaurants are in the area: check out the Highfield, serving breakfast from 8 until 11am, two-for-one deals on mains and a Sunday carvery; the Wheatsheaf, with an excellent range of real ales (hurrah!), freshly prepared meals and events (quiz night on Tuesdays, live music on Saturdays and karaoke once a month); the Bangladeshi restaurant Panshi and the Italian restaurant Fresco Fresco.

Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals – result.

Quiet site, plenty of room, easy access.

    Disliked:

Dirty child's play area, overflowing bins all over the site, screws and nails in gravel pitch, litter and dog dirt on play area. Showers dirty and cold.

From the manager...

Dear Guest
We are pleased you enjoyed the peacefulness of the Park and that you found the pitch access spacious and easy.
With regards to the play area and bins issue, we do endeavour to remove all rubbish at the beginning of every day and also monitor this throughout the day and we are currently in the process of building a larger and more efficient point in order to account for a larger customer base throughout the season. We are also in the process of tidying and relaying new gravel onto the pitches where required.
The showers are cleaned regularly, firstly in the mornings and then checked later in the day and throughout the evenings to keep mess/untidiness at a minimum. We have also checked the boiler to ensure that the water temperature is kept even.
We do value your feedback and are working to ensure that these problems are kept to a minimum.
Kind regards

    Large pitch

    Disliked:

No rubbish collection points anywhere on site except by gate. A long walk to disposal point? Plus disposal bins overflowing with waste? Will be a real problem in high season?

From the manager...

Dear Guest
We are sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the rubbish disposal situation on Royal Umpire, during your recent stay.
We are currently in the process of building a larger, more improved point which should result in a more tidier and efficient area and able to handle the rubbish disposal of a larger customer base throughout the season.
We do endeavour to collect and remove all the rubbish at the beginning of every day and continue to monitor this whenever necessary.
We do appreciate your feedback and are pleased that you enjoyed the pitch you were allocated.

    Friendly reception
    Appearance good on approach

    Disliked:

Showers/toilets tired n dirty - not enough hooks for towels/clothes. No mop to clean/dry floor. Pitch had metal pegs and broken glass on it and what looked like remains of seasonal Awning had to clear before set up. Bin areas to small burst bags all over floor and bags rubbish dumped around site in water points etc. Weeds growing over hardcore looks unloved and tired. Vans quite close either side of road! 85% seasonals at least spilling over from their pitches place looks a mess. If u want cheap you’ll get it here - but smart, clean and tidy it’s not!

From the manager...

Dear Guest

We are sorry to hear you were not very happy with your stay on Royal Umpire.
With regard to the toilet/shower facilities, these are cleaned every morning and are then checked later in the day and throughout the evening. The rubbish disposal point is currently being re-developed to account for a larger customer base on Park and should result in a more efficient and tidier area. Again, the rubbish is removed from the bin points at the beginning of each day and we attempt to keep this under control and monitored throughout the day.
The vacant pitches are in the process of being tidied and some are to be re-gravelled very shortly.
Your comments have been duly noted and we very much value your feedback.

Kind regards
J. Monaghan

    Disliked:

Location. Nothing around. Prepare to come with everything. No shop on site. Croston was a hike & apart from a couple of pubs it was not a village feel.

From the manager...

Dear Guest
Thank you for your lovely feedback about the Park and positive comments regarding the facilities.
We do have a small area in reception behind the desk, that offers a limited supply of basic things like tea, coffee, tinned food, long life milk and also some toiletries but we do direct customers to the local garage which is very close by, if they require other items.
We do advertise our park as being in a tranquil location and most customers seem to be very happy with the pubs and eating establishments in Croston however, we do understand your comments regarding the distance on foot.
We hope you will feel able to visit us again in the future months .

Dear Guest
Thank you for your kind comments and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.
We have noted your remarks regarding the dog walking area and regarding the shop, we do have a small area in reception behind the desks which offers a limited supply of the essentials but would usually mention there is a larger well stocked shop at the local garage a couple of hundred yards away,
We hope you will consider another stay with us in the not too distant future.

Directions

From the M6 south:
Come off the M6 at Junction 27. Up the slip road turn left and immediately move to the right hand lane, turn right towards Chorley, Eccleston. Stay on this road for about 15 minutes (mind speed camera as they are active). You will eventually pass a Citroen garage on your right. Go over the bridge and follow road A581 Croston/Southport to the left. At the end of this road turn left. We are on the right, just after Leyland Garden Centre (approximately half mile).

From the M6 north:
Leave the M6 at Junction 28. Down the slip road turn right at the traffic lights. Turn right at the next traffic light into A49 (opposite Hayrick pub). Stay on the A49 until you come to a mini island and go straight across. At next mini island, turn right onto the A581 signposted Southport, Euxton Mills Pub. Follow this road for a couple of miles and we are on the right, just after Leyland Garden Centre.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north-west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north-east.

Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, found by boffins to be England's friendliest town.

Back at base, Croston is a comely, and quirky, little village: they celebrate Bastille Day here every 14 July, for example – ooh la la. Eat/drink your way around town or, for more substantial shopping, take your readies to the five floors of the Botany Bay Mill in Chorley. Cedar Farm at Mawdesley sells crafts, clothing and gifts and has a monthly farmers' market.

If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.

Must see

  • Camelot Theme Park (3.1 miles)
  • WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre (5.5 miles)
  • Forest of Bowland (6.3 miles)
