  • Well-kept and landscaped park on the edge of Croston
  • Among meadows with well-tended garden, play area and dog exercise area
  • A 30-min drive to Southport and Preston; 50 to Liverpool/Manchester
Score. Royal Umpire Caravan Park at Leyland in Lancashire hits quite a few goals if you're looking for a holiday park within easy reach of old English villages and scenic countryside... and close to the sands at Southport as well as within easy reach of ringing the tills/partying in Preston or lighting up the kids' faces in Blackpool. It's rather ace on site too at this neatly kept and prettily set out site, with a landscaped park and a sunken garden to sink into with a book and a cuppa. There's a mini football pitch for mini Ronaldos (there might be quite a few of these given the park's location 50 minutes from both Liverpool and Manchester), and a well-equipped play area with a soft wood bark surface, swings, slides and a climbing frame if the kids want to make a bit of a racket. The shower blocks are centrally heated and have free hot water, baby changing and disabled access. Dogs will find Royal Umpire right in their league too, as it's dog-friendly and has a big area set aside for canine constitutionals – result.

Local attractions

Royal Umpire Caravan Park's location is right on the ball if you're game for exploring the north west: it's easy to get to all the region's main towns and cities from here as well as the Lancashire coast just to the west and the Forest of Bowland to the north east. Manchester, Liverpool and Blackpool don't need much of an intro from us and should probably have at least a day/night out spent in each, as should Preston, which includes the biggest gallery space in Lancashire at the Preston Free Public Library, and Bolton, once named by boffins as England's friendliest town. Back at base, Croston five minutes' drive away is a comely, and quirky, little village: they celebrate Bastille Day here every 14 July, for example – ooh la la. Eat/drink your way around town at the plentiful cafés and restaurants or, for more substantial shopping, take your readies to the five floors of the Botany Bay Mill in Chorley. Cedar Farm at Mawdesley sells crafts, clothing and gifts and has a monthly farmers' market. If the kids need mollifying after a morning at the shops, take them to Worden Park in Leyland to let off steam: it has open meadows, mature woodlands and a hedge maze to run around in, a miniature railway, nine-hole golf course and lots of wildlife to see.

Classic electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: Lovely little site, kids loved the park and seeing the horses also was lovely to see cockrels, hens and pheasants roaming freely around the site!! Us adults enjoyed a few competive games of draughts on the big draughts and chess boards they have. Toilet and shower blocks were clean and tidy can't say what showers were like as used our own. Reception staff were lovely and friendly got a very warm and inviting welcome when we arrived!! Great site and would definitely return.

Disliked: Our only downfall with the site was the only rubbish bins were right next to the entrance/exit would be easier if there were a couple near the bottom too.

Superior electric gravel touring pitch

Liked: pretty much everything, first time myself and my husband visited Royal Umpire in our motorhome. cant fault anything. toilets were lovely and clean, a bit dated but not dirty or smelly cleaned daily. Elson point clean and well maintained, had red some reviews that were a worry before we arrived but everything was lovely no problems. site was lovely and clean and well maintained just a lovely place to visit. will defiantly be coming back. Had a lovely lunch at the Leyland garden centre next door to camp site. Thank you Royal Umpire for a lovely relaxing weekend.

Disliked: Communal bins were a bit far and WIFI would have been handy. but that's it really.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Giant chess board, play area, football pitch and local walks. Camp was nice clean and tidy. Helpful friendly staff.

Disliked: The washrooms were clean but felt alittle outdated and could use an update. However saying the showers were warm and had good power to them.
