Secure and sheltered on the banks of the River Wenning, Riverside Caravan Park in Lancashire is perfect for when you can't decide between riverside or lakeside fishing. The friendly staff here can sort you out with daily, weekly and seasonal fishing permits to land brown trout on their own private fishing stretch on the Wenning, with a private fishing lake also available for keener anglers after carp, roach, perch and rudd (remember to bring your Environment Agency licence). For younger campers who aren't angling to cast off, the park reception also has inflatable boats for river floating. Riverside is a safe, family-oriented park with a private access road and 24-hour CCTV. There's an on-site shop and also a games room and play area for the kids to let off steam.

Route directions

If you're travelling south on the M6, leave at junction 36 and follow the A65 towards Skipton, turning off at Clapham and follow the signs into High Bentham. If you're travelling north on the M6, leave at junction 34 and follow the A683 towards Kirkby Lonsdale, turning right before Hornby onto the B6480, signposted High Bentham. The park is signposted from the middle of High Bentham. We would advise you not to rely completely on your satnav as from certain directions it will take you 'as the crow flies' which can be a little tricky if you're towing.

Local attractions

It’s only a short stroll from Riverside into the local market town of Bentham where there are several supermarkets, takeaways, pubs and cafés as well as bakers, butchers and more; if you’re visiting in the middle of the week, there’s a livestock market every Wednesday, and there's also a farmers’ market in the Town Hall once a month. Bentham also has a golf course with licensed clubhouse. There’s a gentle two-mile stroll along the river from Bentham and a longer ten-mile hike into the countryside around the town; nearby, the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail covers five miles of stunning Yorkshire scenery and ancient woodland. For a less gentle day, take the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge around Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough (yes, all of them) within twelve hours (yes, in total). Bentham and the surrounding area is an easy gateway to the Yorkshire Dales, the Forest of Bowland and the Lake District National Park, all with walking, caving, watersports, mountain biking and horse riding to hand as well as market towns, gardens, historic houses and dozens of villages to explore. Britain’s longest show cave (one mile in total), White Scar Cave, is at Ingleton for a subterranean look at Big Bertha and Jailhouse Rock, with the nearby Ingleborough Cave is accessible by a woodland walk from the village of Clapham. For city trippers, Riverside is an easy drive for days out to Lancaster, Preston and Blackpool, with Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool also within reach for a day trip. The seaside resort of Morecombe is a wise coastal choice for those with kids (get them to try the famous Morecambe Bay potted shrimps, too), while for other family days out in Lancashire there are adventure centres, play parks, farms and animal parks abounding.
