Rookby Scarth Nearly Wild Camping: Lower camping field

General

  • No-frills campsite on Cumbrian farmland with far-reaching hill views
  • Three miles from Kirkby Stephen; Barnard Castle 30 minutes' drive
  • Uncrowded site set over 20 acres; dogs, campfires or barbecues allowed

Luxury has its time and place, but so does bivouacking under the stars close to North West England's national parks. If you're intrigued by the latter, pick a pitch at Rookby Scarth Nearly Wild Camping, an all-natural site on a spectacular Cumbrian farm. With minimal amenities, twenty acres of space and excellent views over the local landscape, this site has back to basics appeal by the bucketload for fans of self-sufficient stays.

The farm is located in the Eden Valley area, three miles from the market town of Kirkby Stephen and a mile and half from Winton, a small village with a pub and access to the A685. Both can be reached on foot: Kirkby Stephen is about 50 minutes away if you choose to walk it, but you'll be rewarded with a scenic and almost totally traffic-free viaduct path that starts right outside the site gates.

The views over crags and hills from base give this place a very wild feel indeed, which is matched by the site's hands-off approach to camping. No flush toilets or showers are available here, but you'll have access to compost bucket toilets with wood pellets. Dogs, campfires and barbecues are all allowed as long as you follow a few simple rules. In return, you and your party have room of space to pitch up in, guaranteed by strict limits on the number of guests allowed on site at any one time.

Please note

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, customers can amend their dates with the campsite/holiday park free of charge for all stays up to, and including, 05/09/2021.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 50 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 21 or over.

Bookings must not be for more than 42 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Group bookings of 9 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

The grass campervan pitches are accessible via an uneven track.

Fantastic site, virtually wild camping with spectacular views from the pitch, loved the peace and quiet. We were in a filed on our own and loved it, compost toilet and toilet tent provided as is drinking water that you can get refills. The owner was wonderful and very helpful, they also have a list of things that you can purchase if you have forgot, such as torches. There are fire pits and rings to hire and also wood you can purchase. You do have to walk your gear up a small hill from the carpark but it is certainly worth it and didn’t detract from a great experience. Would definitely recommend and we had a 7 year old with us.

What a dream place. We loved it. Remote quite. The campsite is on a hill and a bit of a walk. When we asked if we cpuld camp closer viv was very a combination and said we could camp closer. For us it was perfect. Viv was helpful, friendly and just what ypu expect from a campsite owner. It is basic wild camping so don't expect all the glamour of fancy camping. We are used to festival camping and ruffing it. We didn't know what to expect from the site. But from my communication with Viv it was made clear from our chats it is jist a field with a walk with great view and a compost toilet. We just brought to much kit to go basic this was our doing. I would say bring the basics. We loved it so much we will be back. Oh! Did i say its remote and you can see the stars at night

Nice views, see the stars clearly, out on our own with no-one around, liked being able to have fire pit. Close to Kirkby Stephen for shops and takeaways. We also went out to richmond about 8miles to a lovely waterfall that the kids played in all day called wain force. She has a little shop set up in the barn with water, firewood, toilet rolls etc.

    Disliked:

We didn't realise you parked down on the farm and then had to climb up the hills to camp and we brought a lot of stuff for 6 kids and 5 adults! Luckily the owner drove all our stuff up and down on the quad, but the kids loved to roam the hills. We did miss having the car close but she has a pitch where camper vans drive to if we were to go again we would ask for this spot it would be much easier. But as I say she took all our stuff up and apart from going up and down the hill to go out anywhere it was great to be up there! Charging extra for per person is not something we are used to camping most sites we've been on is per pitch so made it more expensive than usual sites we stay on and thats on a campsite with facilities not a hill on a field so think it should be just a £12pn flat pitch fee.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
Just in case anyone is confused may I clarify that I don’t supply wifi, accommodation or any facilities/activities on my “nearly” wild campsite.
The campervan pitches are at the bottom of a hilly/craggy field and the field is only accessible via an uneven track which is clearly stated on pitchup.com . The uneven track is also clearly stated on the follow up email that I send to all my customers where I ask them to check that the Rookby Scarth experience is truly what they are looking for.
I never wish to disappoint my customers and I offer a free, no quibble cancellation if you find you have booked my campsite in error.
Rookby Scarth Nearly Wild Camping is exactly what some customers are looking for but it’s definitely not for the average camper. Please book with us if you want an as near to wild camping experience as is possible and leave no trace of your visit other than flattened grass.
If you want to open your tent or campervan door and look out over the Eden valley from halfway up a fell then this is for you.
The views are awesome and so are the sunsets 🌅 but I’m biased 🙃

Great campsite and host, exactly what we were looking for. Very isolated and self-sufficient. Even had pop-up tents to have some privacy during a number 2!
Sadly the wind absolutely battered us during the 1st night, in which my tent poles snapped and the morning concluded with my friend chasing after my tent as it blew away. This is nothing against the campsite and was just an unfortunate event but it meant we had to end our stay early, despite the generous offer to hole-up in a big shed until the bad weather passed.
Due to the bad luck with the whether, the host offered us a night in credit in the future and to refund a bag of hardwood we had purchased, which I thought was rather generous.

Thank you.
I look forward to greeting you all back here later this summer when hopefully the weather is behaving more as expected. Sorry I have been unable to process the refund for the hardwood but a “free” bag awaits your return. Great respectful campers even in the most horrendous of weather conditions and you were all soaked wet through. 🥰
