General

  • Family-friendly site on an upland farm in the Howgill Fells
  • Handy access from the M6, a five-minute drive from Tebay
  • By the River Lune with a beach for paddling; easy access to walks

Low Borrowbridge Farm is a simple and scenic site on a working upland farm in Cumbria, in a handy spot that’s easily accessed from the M6 and about five minutes’ drive from Tebay.

It’s not just the motorway access that makes this location a particularly nifty one for a break – it’s also in a strategic place on the edge of both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks, in a part of the world known as the Howgill Fells.

There are many (many, many) miles of walks to be had out in the national parks, but you don’t have to roam very far to get going on the rural wanders: paths lead straight out onto woodland walks, up into the fells or over to Borrowdale from here. Bit warm upon your return? Take a splash in the River Lune, which runs next to the site and has access via a small pebbly beach area (please make sure kids are supervised).

If it’s not paddling weather, settle down somewhere on site to keep an eye out for local wildlife: otters, red squirrels and rare pearl-bordered butterflies can often be spotted around the farm.

Facilities at this family-oriented site include portaloos and sinks, rubbish collection and drinking water from a bowser. Food can be acquired at the pub, café and farm shop two miles away in Tebay.

    Disliked:

The grass was far too long kids didn’t want to play cause they ended up sailing and if u got up into go the toilet in the night ur legs ended up soaked with young children it’s not great, when I asked the owner why the grass wasn’t cut she said we have to get a professional company on to do it working farm but they don’t cut the grass !!! Your not allowed a fire and u can’t park next to your tent, I would have gone back if the grass was cut and u where allowed a fire, 2 mins away is another camp site I would use that one same facilities with nice short grass and u can have a fire for the same price

Scenery was beautiful, lots of wildlife. Proper back to basics campsite.

    Disliked:

Not being able to take your car onto the campsite. You have to park across the road and use a wheel barrow to bring your tent etc. Reason given was the access gate gets too muddy, hopefully someone can think of an idea to rectify that as it was such a chore to get everything across. It took us 4 trips with 2 wheel barrows.

Stunning location. Practical for lakes area. Very friendly welcome. Clean and well maintained.

This is a 'back to basics' site with only fresh water and portaloos in the way of facilities. It's flat for camping and by a lovely river. Pitches are a good size and on the days we were there it was remarkably quiet. I have camped here several times now and love the simplicity of it and the location. It is out of the main lakes area meaning you can access south and northern lakes easily. C.30mins to Ullswater, similar to Windermere. Loads of walks straight from the site too I expect. If you like keeping it really simple then this is a good option. Be aware of biting insects. They are particularly bad this time of year (late July).

    Disliked:

Road noise from m6 was intrusive at night. Grass was a bit long meaning wet feet. Otherwise just what we wanted for a few nights.
