General

  • Family-friendly site on an upland farm in the Howgill Fells
  • Handy access from the M6, a five-minute drive from Tebay
  • By the River Lune with a beach for paddling; easy access to walks

Low Borrowbridge Farm is a simple and scenic site on a working upland farm in Cumbria, in a handy spot that’s easily accessed from the M6 and about five minutes’ drive from Tebay.

It’s not just the motorway access that makes this location a particularly nifty one for a break – it’s also in a strategic place on the edge of both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales national parks, in a part of the world known as the Howgill Fells.

There are many (many, many) miles of walks to be had out in the national parks, but you don’t have to roam very far to get going on the rural wanders: paths lead straight out onto woodland walks, up into the fells or over to Borrowdale from here. Bit warm upon your return? Take a splash in the River Lune, which runs next to the site and has access via a small pebbly beach area (please make sure kids are supervised).

If it’s not paddling weather, settle down somewhere on site to keep an eye out for local wildlife: otters, red squirrels and rare pearl-bordered butterflies can often be spotted around the farm.

Facilities at this family-oriented site include portaloos and sinks, plus drinking water from a bowser. Food can be acquired at the pub, café and farm shop two miles away in Tebay.

    No road noise from M6
    Views and location were great.

    Disliked:

Pitches were too cramped together, should be 6m rule between pitches for fire safety, not to mention social distancing for COVID19.
Open fires were not allowed but there was at least 6.
No bins and litter was left on the site.
Portaloos were very smelly by the Sunday of the Bank Holiday period.
Only one wheelbarrow for 30+ pitches.

Beautiful location and a peaceful site. Nice atmosphere.

    Disliked:

Not a lot of owner presence or any information of how to contact the sites owner if needed. The toilets are only portables and smell quite bad. I have been to sites where its actually a lot cheaper and they have proper facility blocks. But overall we enjoyed it still. Also not much social distancing as pitches are packed together very closely.

Lovely scenic area. My boys loved the pebbled area along the water, and was nice that there were a few little fishing nets that they could use. They loved throwing the stones and splashing in the water.

Portaloo's were as you would expect! We were already aware there was no other facilities.

Easy to get to, and no bother getting set up on the site, nice and clean.

    Disliked:

Our tent was right next to the fastest flowing part of the river and it was very very noisy. There was no getting away from it and it made for a restless night (totally not the fault of the campsite though!)

If I could make a suggestion it would be for you to provide a few more wheelbarrows to help with loading/ unloading the car. We never got to use it as was always in use by someone else so was a bit of a struggle carrying everything back over to the car.

It would also be helpful if there were bins for when you leave. I had to have two bin bags of rubbish on my knee on our way home as we couldn't find anywhere to leave it.

I do feel that you are a little overpriced at £25 a night for a site with no services at all, there are more sites in the area that are full campsites with services etc for less.
