Puddlemire: Dappled light

General

  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 10 minutes' walk away

Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. This friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside is between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck.

A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well-situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy.

Not that you need to travel far if you don't want to: there are lots of footpaths around the site to stroll along too, including one that leads up to the top of Newbiggin Craggs, where the views stretch as far as Blackpool on a clear day. Farleton Knott is right behind the site too, with some great mountain biking trails and stunning views over the fells and the bay.

This is a back to basics site with showers and composting toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass, and wood packs, tea boxes and barbecue packs (for an extra charge, payable on site) are delivered daily to ensure you don't go hungry.

That’s if you haven’t already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. Handily, there's a local pub 10 minutes' walk away/five minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or feed up on top-notch food.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Really friendly and caring owner who sent detailed instructions on how to reach the site by bike. Though I arrived late I was picked up by landrover at the site entrance and driven over to the camping field. A novelty to have my own loo shower and washing up bucket! A bit expensive for a solo traveller (fine for one night though!) but great value for a family.

Both of us really enjoyed our stay here. It is a beautiful spot, nestled down near a beck (great for paddling). Amazingly peaceful and tranquil.

For anyone wanting to explore the Lakes or the Dales, it is really well situated, and it's also close to Morecambe Bay (we drove down to Heysham for a swim). The countryside in the immediate vicinity also very beautiful - and much quieter than in the national parks themselves.

The owners were lovely, and did everything they could to make our stay enjoyable. The facilities are clean, with one toilet and shower allocated to each tent. It's very like wild camping, but with a bit of extra comfort. Hammocks and fire pits were a great addition too!

Would definitely stay again and recommend.

Stunning location next to beck for a paddle. Sun set down the valley.
Lovely child friendly site with no cars, limited to 6 pitches so felt really safe. Gas showers and compost toilet worked great. Amazing, friendly and attentive hosts.

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive).

For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. While, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns.

Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate.

If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll find Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
