Kez's Campsite: Ancient woodland with sunny backdrop

General

  • Peaceful field site on a family farm with access to tennis court
  • Around 20 minutes’ drive to Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale and Morecambe
  • Dog-friendly site between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District

Finding it tricky to decide between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District? Weighing up your options between countryside or seaside? Split the difference and choose a stay at Kez’s Campsite, a back-to-basics site on a peaceful farm in South Cumbria.

From your pitch surrounded by green fields edged by traditional dry-stone walls and ancient woodland, it’s 20 minutes’ drive north to Kendal – the gateway to the Lake District – and the same distance east for Kirkby Lonsdale and the expanse of the Yorkshire Dales beyond. You can get to see the sea at Morecambe Bay in around 20 minutes too.

The site is run as a friendly family affair. Kez or other family members meet guests and will be on hand to help you settle in. Dogs are equally welcome and there’s plenty of space to let them have a run around. You can park up right next to your pitch and it’s fine to set up your raised firepits and barbecues to get some campfire cooking on the go.

Pick up local produce at the butcher in the village of Burton-in-Kendal, three minutes’ drive or a 20-minute walk away. Or if you fancy letting someone else do all the hard work, there’s a pub in Burton too and another in Holme, a five-minute drive or half hour’s walk. Both villages also have post offices and general stores should you need them. One night a week, a local pizza van company drops in at the site, which should make sorting dinner even easier.

Please note

The grocery shop is open between 05/07 and 15/08.

Great site for those looking for the simpler camping experience. Loved our spot by the woods for a quiet break surrounded by trees and birdsong. Kez was helpful and friendly, no fuss. Will definitely be booking again. Watch out for the odd nettle or two!

Quiet, out of the way, and picturesque

    Disliked:

Very disorganised - had a very helpful, but out of the loop, kid directing people to the field (apparently Kez is also an A-level student making it all a bit suspect). We booked a tent pitch that said there was a picnic table and a fire pit... there was nothing there that resembled that, it was more like wild camping in a field of long grass and nettles with access to one, surprisingly clean, portaloo. Campervans had to stay in the carpark for some reason which did not thrill those who had booked and paid for a pitch. No access to water or anything as well. Cows also seemed free to come up to the field we were camping on.

Fantastic quiet campsite. Very basic, just a field and a portaloo but the hosts are very friendly and we were supplied with fresh eggs for breakfast free of charge. There is no water supply on the field but there is a drinking water tap on the farmyard which is around 5 mins walk away. Portaloo is clean and fresh loo roll brought daily.

Helpful owners, we got lost trying to find the campsite but they were quick to respond over the phone and directed us to the right place. Kez’s brother, Drake, made sure to lead us down to the right field. Camp ground was basic but peaceful - a good wild camping experience. Parts of the field were uneven but we managed to find level ground for our tent. The portaloo was very clean and spacious in size, well stocked with dry loo roll. Kez’s Mum brought us eggs (for free) to cook for our breakfast in the morning which was a lovely touch! Leaving time says 11am but owners were very chilled and told us we could take our time and enjoy the field which we appreciated.
There was a tap by the cow shed which was a 5 minute walk from the field. Unsure whether it was drinking water or not but we used the water for cooking and boiled for drinking.
Very quiet. Woods to explore by the field. In the evening the cows visited the field but they were calm and minded their own business.

    Disliked:

We found it hard to find. The coordinates linked to the email weren’t completely accurate.
The site could have been improved by having access to drinking water water.
