General

  • Back-to-basics rural site a 10-minute drive from Lake Windermere
  • Hill walks, nature reserves and motor museum within a half-hour drive
  • Bike hire on site, shop and café next door

Nothing fishy about this one: a simple site in the Lake District, close to everything this fab region has to offer.

Ings Kippers Campsite is a back to basics site in the grounds of a B&B in the small village of Ings, 10 minutes by car from Windermere in the Lake District. Exploring the Lake District National Park is a cinch from here: you can hire a bike on site, walk the Dales Way or take the open-top bus from the nearby bus stop. There's also a train station five minutes' drive away in Staveley.

Ings is also well served for food and drinks, with two breweries within staggering distance and a country pub with good food and riverside garden a couple of miles away. Across the road from the site is a mini market and a café, plus there's a fish and chip shop in Staveley.

Facilities at Ings Kippers include a communal barbecue, picnic area, firepit and free wifi. Among the other amenities are a washing-up area, drinking water tap and a modern unisex toilet/shower block. There's also a primitive pit latrine, and if you're feeling brave you can use the open-air warm shower.

Please note the path to the field is steep and not recommended for guests with reduced mobility.

It's great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us.
Good job there isn't an opportunity to rate the weather when writing your generous review. We'd be lucky to get even one green triangle!
Best wishes to you both.

What an amazing stay in Ings! John the owner went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and make the most of our stay in the Lake District. He had excellent local knowledge that he shared with us; from local breweries, to activities for rainy days.

The tent pitches up on the hill have amazing views of the surrounding hills, and with fire pits provided, you can sit by your tent and watch the stars without getting too cold.

I couldn't recommend staying at this campsite enough! We will definitely be returning.

Thanks very much, Kate.
Getting such appreciative comments gives us a great buzz!
We always try to ensure that our guests enjoy their visits to the Lake District: it's such a beautiful place, even though Mother Nature is a bit oiver-generous with the rain! You were lucky to get a glimpse of the stars!
Do come and stay again soon.
Best wishes,
Jonathan.

Thanks for your kind review, Jenny.
It's very encouraging to hear that our esteemed visitors have had an enjoyable stay, despite the unpredictable weather and the Corona virus situation. It's been a pretty short camping season, but hopefully things might have improved by next year.
Best wishes,
Jonathan.

Things we liked in short are: free outdoor shower, barbecues for every pitch that you can light up whenever you want, picnic tables, water supplied directly to camp, clean and organised, sufficient parking spacious camping area with individual lots, plenty of space between tents, very picturesque location on top of a hill.

Most importantly, our host Jonathan was always extremely friendly and helpful - he always gave us good travel advice and food/shopping recommendations, as well as helped us with small things like taking our gear up the hill, charging our phones, etc. He keeps the place very tidy and well organised - he's taken care to ensure individual camping lots are on level ground with a good view and supplied with their own barbecue. All in all, great experience.

How kind of you, Fran, to pen such a favourable review almost before I got round to changing the linen in the Shepherd's Hut. I'm so glad that you both enjoyed your stay, despite the atrocious weather which has actually got worse since you left! How very difficult it is to plan for holidays in the UK with our incredibly unpredictable climate. Come to think of it, it's pretty risky planning holidays anywhere in the world in these crazy times!
I do hope you'll pay us another visit soon. There's no finer place than the Lake District when the sun shines!

Loved being at this campsite! I used public transport and it was easy to get to using the train and buses. It was also easy to get to other places to visit using buses and walking. As a solo female traveller I felt very safe and comfortable the whole time at the campsite. John is so welcoming, friendly and helpful. He really went above and beyond to make my trip enjoyable, offering advice on what to do and how to get there - I would return for him alone! The campsite is small and facilities are basic which is what I wanted. If you like the lakes, meeting friendly people and back to basics camping that leaves you feeling wholesome then this is the place for you!

    Disliked:

The only thing was it being near a road you could hear cars go by but this did quieten down in the evenings.

From the manager...

Thanks very much, Dulcie. Glad you enjoyed your stay and I hope you had a good breakfast at Wilf's Cafe before cycling further south.
I wonder where you have got to now? Do take care and please send me a postcard when you eventually reach Grasse. What an adventure!
Best wishes,
Jonathan.

Local attractions

It's hard to gaze at all those hills without wanting to climb a few, and you're in a fine spot to do it from: paths up to Red Screw, Stony Cove Pike and High Street start around Troutbeck, quarter of an hour's drive away, and it's about half an hour if you want to scale the heights of Helvellyn.

If you prefer to stay down low, Lake Windermere, 10 minutes away, has many trails for walks and cycling, or you can take it really easy on a lake cruise or steamer trip.

If you're more interested in journeys through time, make the 10-minute trip to Beatrix Potter World, explore the medieval fortress of Sizebergh Castle (15 minutes), tour Wordsworth's idyllic bolthole at Rydal Mount or the multitude of vehicles in the Lakeland Motor Museum (both half an hour away).

For wildlife, make your way over to Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve (half an hour): along with RSPB Leighton Moss and the Trowbarrow Quarry Nature Reserve, this diverse peninsula of limestone hills and wetlands is rich in bird life, butterflies and, at certain times of the year, carpeted in wild flowers as well.

If you've worked up a thirst, head over to the Hawkshead Brewery, five minutes' drive from the site for tours and tasting.
