General

  • Peaceful Lake District park near Scafell Peak and Wastwater
  • Local pub within two minutes' walk
  • Well-equipped play area, picnic tables and woodland area

Holy moly. You'll likely already be sold with the Lake District location of welcoming Church Stile Farm Holiday Park, in the midst of superbly scenic valley Wasdale with close-by climbing and kayaking opps up the Lake District’s highest peak Scafell Pike and on its deepest lake Wastwater.

But a hard day clambering and kayaking is always best followed by a fine ale and supper at a local watering hole, so you'll likely be sold all the more with Church Stile’s locale only two minutes’ walk from the two pubs and hotel of local hamlet Nether Wasdale. Praise be.

Wasdale’s claim as ‘the birthplace of British climbing’ isn’t a lofty one, as first-timers will see from the screes and summits all around: ascension fans flock here from all over the world to tackle peaks like Scafell, the Great Gable, Yewbarrow and Kirk Fell.

But if your preferred surface is on water rather than several hundred metres up a chunk of rock, Wastwater, once voted Britain’s favourite view, is only a mile from the farm to tackle canoeing, kayaking and rowing (motorboats, sailing boats and other noisy/large vessels aren’t allowed, so you can float along the water or picnic by its banks in blessed Lake District peace).

All is praiseworthy on site too: Church Stile Farm Holiday Park covers about seven acres of a spacious oak woodland and wildlife-laden setting, with venerable views of the Wasdale valley and the Screes mountains range.

Facilities are kept to high standards and include free hot showers in separate ladies’ and gents’ washrooms, free hairdryers (for both ladies and gents, hurrah), and a disabled/family room with baby changing unit. The laundry room has hot and cold drink vending machines, a free freezer for ice blocks, and a coin-operated washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board.

To keep the kids happy when they’re not sorting out the laundry, there’s a well-equipped play area with swings and climbing frames, a grassed area for ball games, and a woodland area adjacent to the site for wildlife spotting and walks. Picnic tables are dotted around the park and barbecues/firepits are available to hire (pick up essentials for the barbie in the shop and some wood from the Church Stile team).

Brilliant campsite that is perfect for families. 17/08/2017

Absolutely fantastic family campsite. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The pitches were all good locations, with easy access to the amenities. The bathroom/shower-block was clean with hot water from 6:30 am to 9 pm. A laundry room and washing up station made it even more suited to families with young children.

We also really enjoyed the woodland walk that is on the site.

The camp shop had a great selection of essentials and some delicious local products (cheese, sausages, bacon, scotch eggs, ice cream), all at good prices.

And the Strands Inn is just out the gate and up the road for some fantastic pub fare including their own selection of beers.

In terms of access to the countryside, it's about a 1.5 - 2 mile walk through beautiful scenery to get to Wast Water, which is near to Scafell Pike.

Fantastic location - quite, lovely scenery, very near walks and pubs (3 in 5 minutes walking distance). Great facilities: reception and shop, toilet and shower facilities very clean and all worked well - park great for kids, although we had none with us. BBQs available to hire, including fuel.

    Disliked:

Shop could do with more choice. Wifi and phone reception only in certain areas at certain times, although this is what I want when I'm in the Lakes!

Beautiful location. Layout of campsite was nice with different areas screened off by trees. Warm showers. Electric hook up. Small park for kids.

    Disliked:

Soap dispensers and paper towels were not replaced frequently enough. Water pressure in taps too high so every time you pushed the tap you got sprayed. Pitch 8 was quite boggy compared to other pitches.

Directions

Church Stile Farm Holiday Park is in the heart of Wasdale Valley in the Western Lake District.

From the south:
Leave the M6 at Junction 36. Follow the signs to Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston (A590). Before reaching Ulverston, turn right onto the A5092 at Greenodd (signposted Western Lake District, Whitehaven and Workington). The A5092 merges with the A595; continue on this road following the signs for Whitehaven/Workington.

A few miles north of Ravenglass you will come to the village of Gosforth. Turn right into the village. Follow the signs for Nether Wasdale (approximately 3.5 miles). Coming down the hill into Nether Wasdale you will pass between two pubs and then a small church on your left. The turning to Church Stile Farm Holiday Park is immediately beyond the church.

From the north:
Leave the M6 at Junction 40 and take the A66 towards Keswick and Cockermouth. At Cockermouth take the A5086 signposted Egremont. The A5086 joins the A595; follow this south past Egremont. A few miles south of the village of Calderbridge you will come to the village of Gosforth: turn left into the village. Passing through the village follow signs to Nether Wasdale as above.

From the east:
From Ambleside take the A593 towards Coniston and then head towards Eskdale over Wrynose Pass and Hardknott pass. Beware: it is a single track road with passing places but the scenery is stunning.

By public transport:
Northern Rail operate the coastal railway between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness. Seascale is the nearest railway station and is about 7 miles west of Church Stile.

Local attractions

Whether you’re climbing, canoeing or just ambling gently around with picnic in backpack, the Wasdale valley is a pretty perfect place for a Lake District hol.

It’s over ten miles long if you fancy a full day’s historic hike, starting from the village of Wasdale Head, the start of the Three Peaks Challenge and the former home of Cumbrian pub landlord Will Ritson, whose tall tales led to the still going strong Biggest Liar Competition. One of the tiniest churches in the land, St Olaf’s, is at Wasdale in its ‘Viking fields’: Wasdale was originally settled by Norse farmers and the beams in the church are rumoured to be from Viking longships.

Climbers can get to Scafell Pike and Great Gable from Wasdale Head, but walkers can continue along the valley length down to the village of Gosforth, which has the biggest Viking Cross in England at the Grade I-listed St Mary’s Church.

For (very) energetic mountain bikers, a tour of Great Gable can be started at Wasdale Head going through Scarth Gap, Black Sail, Sty Head and Honister. This isn’t for the faint-hearted, so those who prefer placid pedalling can take their wheels from Wastwater to Stanton Bridge, or the gentler mountain bike ride around Nether Wasdale and Hollow Moor.

Post-mountain bike ride, Scafell Pike climb, Wasdale Valley hike or Wastwater swim, the Strand’s Inn and the Screes Inn, a couple of minutes from base camp at Nether Wasdale, both serve lunch and dinner as well as a mix of real ales and an on-site microbrewery at the Strand. The hamlet’s hotel, the Low Wood, welcomes non-residents.

Finally, fancy the beach? The Cumbrian coast at Seascale is seven miles from Church Stile Farm (walkable, we reckon), with miles of sandy beach leading to the Lake District’s only coastal village, the fishing village of Ravenglass.
