General

  • Peaceful site for pod, tent and van dwellers
  • On-site pub converted from a 17th-century barn
  • Outdoor playground and indoor games room available for kids

Guests here will be lulled by the lovely views of Ullswater at The Quiet Site, which huddles in splendid seclusion in the fells above a lake.

You’ll find a ti-top selection of facilities here, including family-sized bathrooms, an on-site shop and a large children’s playground, but the thing that really sets The Quiet Site apart is its pub.

Dictionary dude Samuel Johnson was surely thinking of the Quiet Bar when he stated, 'There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.'

Not only is it a magnificent seventeenth century barn with an absurdly well-provisioned cellar, but it has its own games room (with table football, pool, air hockey, and table tennis), and - for the ultimate in parental pleasure - an upstairs playhouse and softplay centre for the kids.

Pitches to close to each other, not enough grassed area outside of pitch. Poor signage to find site. Campers kitchen could be improved as well as children's park.

NOT for children we booked up for 3 nights on our last night they suddenly asked for 100.00 saying it was to make sure we were quiet as they had complaints or get off the site. We left the man was really obnoxious and intimidating. They come round at 10PM ASKING YOU TO BE QUIET.The pitch its self is pure gravel which rips the bottom of your tent. Its all so very misleading they make out the lake is closer than it is when in reality its nearly a mile away. We only choose this site as we booked up late and they had places available now I know why. Needless to say we will not be returning.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us on Pitch Up.
Where to start..?
Here is how we saw it.
The parents in this tent argued fairly constantly and really loudly from arrival.
After a string of complaints on the second night of three, following arguments through the night and despite our best efforts to quieten them down we offered them a choice of paying a noise deposit or leaving early.
They chose to leave (thank goodness!) but as usually happens in these cases have gone on to write a poor and largely fictitious review.
For the record:
We widely advertise ourselves as being 1.25 miles from the lake. We have a glorious view over the water, but none of the midges often found right next to the water.

All our pitches are rounded pea gravel. We have ground sheets to lend out if you do not wish to put your tent directly onto the gravel.

When we spoke with you regarding your noise we were neither obnoxious or intimidating. We always follow the same professional approach which always starts with a quiet warning, and progress's through firmer warnings to a noise deposit or eviction in extreme cases. You are only the second campers we have had to ask to leave this year (The clue is in the name)
We are delighted you have decided not to return to us in the future. There are many campsites where all night arguments and shouting at your children is tolerated, we are not one of these parks.

The site has greatly improved. The bar which is wonderful, aromatic, interesting and serves very good ales,is always a welcome site. The baths are a godsend after a long day. The shop has all you need instantly and anything missing can be got from The Ullswater Caravan Site close by. When we arrived we were met by a welcoming Sarah who helped us immensely because we had no electric and had just had a 5hour journey from Scotland! She brought the sites cable to discover there was a fault on our own cable and let us use it till our's was fixed,my hubby being a sparky soon sorted it ! We had 2 small dogs and loved the improved dog walk which we all enjoyed. Lastly I must say the amenities are so clean and well placed that there is no crush to do what you need to,ie wash up,shower, bathe or just park on site. Oh and I must say about there burger van-absolutely value for money and very very tasty!!!! Well done Park Foot.

This site is awesome for its views for almost all of the pitches overlooking Ulswater in the distance.
Helpful staff and 1st class facilities and lots of hot water for the shower and then there is the food wagon 4-5 nights each week and breakfast each morning what a bonus.
I wish we had a longer stop here. See you again.

There is nothing I could really fault- possibly the shop staying open later as not a lot within walking distance so if you needed something in the evening and had a few drinks in the lovely bar wouldn't be easy to get anything.

Directions

Travelling from the M6, Junction 40 (at Penrith)
Take the A66, signposted Keswick, for 1 mile and then take the A592 signposted Ullswater for 4 miles. Turn right when you see the lake in front of you, still on the A592, signposted Windermere. After approximately 1 mile, you will see the Brackenrigg Inn on your right-hand side; there is a road to the right directly after the Inn. Drive up here for 1.5 miles. You will see The Quiet Site on the right-hand side. Turn right and book in at the shop.

If your caravan or motorhome is very large, please ignore the Brackenrigg Inn turn. Instead, continue on to the next right turn, which is by the telephone box. Turn right here and follow the lane up the hill past the church and take the first turn on the right. The site is on the left.

Local attractions

This being the Lake District, there are oodles of things to do nearby: fantastic walks and bike rides; pony trekking; steam trains to steam boats, paddling and rowing, and pretty much everything water-based in between. Landlubbers of a historical bent will find no shortage of castles, Roman forts and stately homes to tempt them.

The locals laugh in the face of drizzly days (well, they see quite a few) and have set up a vast array of coping mechanisms: visit one of the multifarious museums in the area, which feature everything from James Bond to pencils, or perhaps take a trip to an aquarium, Ice Age caverns filled with stalactites, or even a slate mine.
