General

  • Safe and spacious site for letting the kids run around
  • Sure to be a hit with anglers and cyclists
  • Explore the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and Scottish Highlands

Free range kids? Flapping around a car free environment in Cumbria’s heavenly Eden Valley close to the Lake District National Park? We’d be in a pretty pickle here at Pitchup.com to pick the Main attraction at peaceful, popular and family-run Mains Farm Caravan and Camping Site, but we’re imagining parents gleefully clinking glasses in the child-friendly landscape while the kids run around.

Anglers and bikers flock here too as the farm has its own single bank salmon and trout fishing hotspot just 200 metres up the road (arrange on arrival) and it’s used by cyclists as an overnight stopoff to rest their weary bones on a C2C pedal as it’s 63 miles from Whitehaven and at the base of the Pennines. This is the Cumbrian countryside, so scenic hikes come as additional standard: take one of the private Mains Farm trails across their own land to feel proper exclusive. The Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall and the Scottish Highlands are all 20 – 30 minutes’ drive away.

But back to the kids. Wind them up and let them roam: although Mains Farm is easy to get to from the M6 and a short drive from the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and Hadrian’s Wall, it’s set well away from main roads and is small enough to be able to keep an eye on any offspring playing on site: pitches are set around open fields or in a walled orchard and all cars have to be parked in the car park away from the pitching areas. All this and a very popular playground with swings, slide, climbing frame and monkey bars on site too: expect not to see small people from dawn to dusk.

Campfires are allowed – hire a fire basket from amiable owners Robert and Julia – and the undercover eating area on site comes with log burner and barbecue. Guests also have use of two kitchen areas with fridges, kettle, oven, hob and microwave, a secure store for bicycles, washing and drying facilities and clean shower and loo blocks converted from the farm’s former stables.

If you’re cooking on site, supplies can be sorted from the Co-op in Lazonby village about a mile away; if you’re feeling lazy/holidaylike, two pubs serving food are within the same distance (ask Robert or Julia to book you a table in advance: like Mains Farm, the village pubs are pretty popular).

Lovely level site with large pitches, you don’t feel like you can reach over and borrow next door’s milk! Ideally situated near the lakes but far enough away for peace and quiet and without the ‘premium’ price tag. The facilities are clean and the water’s hot! Make sure you take a torch for any trips to the loo at night though. Love the laminated local walk sheets too. No hard standings but that didn’t bother us and the owners were on hand if you need a tow out during the wetter months.

Julie - the owner - was really helpful and met us when we arrived. We had a choice of two generously sized grass pitches with electric. Despite the recent wet weather the field was firm and well drained but a section close to the entrance was a bit cut up and muddy. Julie had already decided that a gravel base needed to put down and was planning to do this very soon. She did check if anyone needed towing off and one large motorhome took up the offer but we were OK in our T5.

Nice layout to the farm with excellent facilities and close to the river Eden for walks - some walking guide leaflets were available to borrow to help us find our way round.

Two good pubs in the village which is approx 15mins walk away. Both had friendly staff and served a selection of real ales and had busy food/restaurant areas.

Arrived Fri afternoon. As it had been raining the field was a bit of a quagmire and the motorhome got stuck. Thankfully a fellow camper with a 4x4 was able to rescue the situation. The owner arranged for a tow to be available Sun lunchtime for me to leave which was excellent customer service. Campsite in a great location for walking and cycling and good pubs nearby. Owner very friendly. Good clean facilities

    Disliked:

No hardstanding which meant in wet weather the entrance to the site becomes impassable other than to 4x4 vehicles

Local attractions

Heavenly Eden Valley walks are right on the doorstep from Mains Farm Camping and Caravan Site, from ambles to (the pubs at) Lazonby to a hike along the River Eden to see the five chambers in red sandstone cliff of Lacy's Caves and then on to Little Salkeld and the Bronze Age stone circle of Long Meg and her Daughters. Ramble to the north of Little Salkeld to see the Eden Lacy Viaduct over the River Eden, one of a couple of dozen viaducts on the 72-mile journey of the Carlisle to Settle Railway (jump on at Lazonby and Kirkoswald railway station to puff north-west to Carlisle or south to Settle).

The Lake District gateway town and once the capital of Cumbria, Penrith, is less than ten miles from Mains Farm and well worth a pootle around for an afternoon poking around its shops, cafés and Tuesday and Saturday market; climb to the top of Beacon Hill (preferably before enormous cream tea) for a divine view across the Eden Valley to the Lakeland hills. A play centre, climbing wall, horse riding centre and bouncing around in body zorb balls are in town for the kids.

From Penrith it’s less than three miles to the Lake District National Park, an area we can confidently proclaim you’ll need more than an afternoon at for steamy sailing on Ullswater, fell climbing on Scafell and more or moseying around the many museums including pencil, motor, Beatrix Potter and Wordsworth.

Going north for the day – actually, allow at least two – Hadrian’s Wall walks and rambles around the Scottish Highlands are about half an hour’s drive away.
