General

  • Peaceful campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a playground area and park

It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields and with the Pennine Fells as a beaut backdrop – and is part of the Lazonby Swimming Pool site for lazy dips. The river's there if you want to fish (get a permit at Lazonby post office or at the pool kiosk) and the northern lakes are 15 miles away.

Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has two pubs, a well-stocked and open daily supermarket with post office and ATM, two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald.

Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about two hundred metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool.

The pool is open daily when the campsite is and heated to 26ºC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/café selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 30/04 and 18/09 (subject to weather conditions).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Quiet and pretty site on the banks of the River Eden. Seemed well maintained although we never saw or met anyone from the site. Simple booking.

    Disliked:

Very wet and muddy when we visited in September. Facilities were very basic. We had no number given for unlocking the toilets. I suspect since it was close to season end things were winding down.

Very quite, clean, surrounded by trees, and next to a picturesque river but fenced off so that children wouldn't escape.
Big playpark, riverside walk and outdoor swimming pool mean the children are not bored.

    Disliked:

The toilets are a bit too far away for children but take a potty and all's fine!

We stayed as a group with young children. The site was secure and safe for the kids and the play area was perfect to let off some steam!

    Disliked:

The walk to the toilets / shower in the dark. It would also be handy if there was gate on the bottom field.

With only ten pitches I was worried it would feel cramped but there is plenty of space and the field feels secluded enough despite having the village playground right next door (which worked in our favour as we were a big group with lots of young children). Showers were extremely hot (possibly too hot for young children) and toilets were clean although part of the public pool also onsite which was a short walk from the camping field. The playground itself, although not part of the field, was excellent for children and never very busy. There is also a lovely short walk along the river that starts just at entrance to the camping field.
Each pitch had access to hookup which was very helpful and the ground was relatively flat all over so good for both camping and caravanning.
We received our arrival details by Post with directions and lots of information a week or so before which was great and felt very organised.

    Disliked:

Suppose the only dislike (if anything) was that the shower was too hot for small bodies and the public outdoor pool wasn’t hot enough to really enjoy (it was end of August though and past the really good weather).

The play park and the campsite only 10 units so everyone is so friendly

Pool is also really good just a shame some days wasn’t open due to no committees or weather but didn’t stop us having fun

Facilities is really clean, if you have young kids best to bring camp toilet as the trek to the toilet in limit lights can be scary for kids

Also the pool have a little cafe which is good for a cuppa or snack

    Disliked:

Wasps!!! We had to make our own wasp trap, and it helped

Directions

Lazonby campsite is situated off the B6413, 4 miles from the A6 at Plumpton and 7 miles from the M6- junction 41.

Travelling North from Penrith on the A6, turn right onto the B6413 signposted Lazonby. Follow the signs to the swimming pool, located on the far side of Lazonby. Follow the road through the centre of the village heading towards Kirkoswald. Pass the local school and playing fields on your right and then as you come to a sharp left-hand bend you will find the swimming pool and entrance to the campsite on the right-hand side.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct: have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic.

The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car.

Withnail and I's destination Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has many shops, supermarkets and services; go here too for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, perfect views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs.

And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.

Must see
