The site was lovely, the views were perfect, the walks were amazing!

We had a fantastic time for 3 nights at this site, the little firepits they provide are really good, we had plenty of space to ourselves as the pitches all around the edge of the field. the local pubs were very friendly and great food!

One of the most beautiful places to visit, if it wasn't a 5 hour drive for us, we would be back on a regular basis!

    Disliked:

we thought there could have more done with the facilities caravan, it has two showers and one toilet with another toilet in the main building. possibly an idea to convert the caravan to a full shower/ toilet block due to the size of the site

From the manager...

Thanks very much for your 10/10 review and for adding your lovely photos of the campsite and surrounding countryside. We're pleased you enjoyed some of the local walks and the two village pubs.
Your pics also show how big the pitches are and how far they are spaced apart round the edge of the field. Thanks!
Despite the size of the field we only take limited numbers of people so as not to overstretch our facilities. However. we are building some more for next season so that camping at Low Greenside Farm will be even better!
Thank you for coming and we hope to see you again some day.

    Hi Rosie and Magnus,
Been home in sunny Lincolnshire since about 2pm after a 3.5 hour drive from yours just wanted to say thanks for the hospitality we really enjoyed our week, although not a walking holiday our pedometers registered 30 miles walked visiting various places
We'll visit again but this time apparently with a bell tent and wood burning stove ..... didn't realize August nights in Cumbria were so bloody cold! 😄

    Kind Regards.

....... only criticism? well you know what I'm going to say more loos and showers but I assume that's in hand? 😉
But might I suggest 4 loos for the ladies, 2 loos and 2 urinals for the gents and 4 showers in total but get one where the door opens a little further 😉, I reckon for the numbers of visitors you've averaged in the 7 days we were there that's ideal.

From the manager...

Hi Steve and family,
Many thanks for your review. We're delighted you had such a good week and found so many places to visit and nice things to do. The area is known for having a great variety of lovely and interesting walks but people don't always know what a lot else it has to offer. We have suggestions on our website for days out and a lots of leaflets on recommended walks and activites to inspire you when you get here.
And yes, you're right, more facilities are on the way for next season!
We'll look forward to seeing you again.

Smashing "wildish" camping. Excellent big field with campfires. Not too busy. Good site management and loads of things to do locally. Hot water available all the time. Site is windy but there is a reasonable amount of shelter. Clean facilities. The yurt looks amazing!

    Disliked:

A few more washing up sinks, showers an wc s would be great but not a massive problem

Thanks very much for your 10/10 review. We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay and found lots to do in the area. It's a shame it was stormy during your stay - it's not like that all the time! We're delighted you liked our lovely new yurt, thank you.

Location is excellent, lovely to be situated next to a working farm, pubs are walkable even with small kids. Nice riverside park about 10-15 mins walk from site. Clean facilities. Very quiet. Nice owners.

    Disliked:

Field is very uneven and rugged, long grass and large parts very boggy. Not too bothered by that, but guess it's not ideal. Site is undulating with many pitches unsuitable for large tents, i.e on slopes or boggy ground. Too many tents in total for the facilities on offer 25 ish large tents plus a motorhome to two showers, two toilets and one washing up sink which in my opinion is totally inadequate. I appreciate what the site is trying to achieve. Camping as it used to be. But what did camping actually used to be? And has it really changed? The cynic in me says that camping as it used to be is a bit of a gimmick. One that translates as: "basic farmers field sold as wild camping nostalgia" - liked it but at £20 a night probably wouldn't return.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review, we're pleased your family enjoyed the quiet campsite, and the facilities on site and in the village. Thank you for coming and being such nice visitors.
Low Greenside's 'Camping as it used to be' means pitching your tent in a quiet and spacious field with unspoiled scenery, great views, and masses of space around you to enjoy and have fun in. We keep our visitors numbers low (rather fewer than 25 tents!) and keep things simple but with all you need.
We're sorry the field didn't look it's best with muddy patches on a few well used spots while you were here. Happily, in such a large field there is still plenty of choice of pitches for even the biggest tents. Following prolonged rain, we can get a few small spots of soft ground but these quickly dry up and are well away from the mown camping areas.

Directions

Low Greenside is easy to find.

From the M6 (6.5 miles): leave the motorway at junction 38. At the roundabout, take the A685 towards Brough and Scotch Corner. 6.5 miles from the roundabout, at the big blue road sign, turn right towards Ravenstonedale. After 150 yards, turn right at the sign for Greenside. Low Greenside is the first farm on the left.

From the A685 at Kirkby Stephen (5 miles): follow the A685 south from Kirkby Stephen. After about 4.5 miles, at the bottom of a long steep hill, turn left towards Ravenstonedale. Ignore the turning left into the village, and continue (passing the Kings Head Hotel, set back on your left) until you see a sign for Greenside. Turn left here. Low Greenside is the first farm on the left.

From Sedbergh A683 (12 miles): follow the A683 from Sedbergh towards Kirkby Stephen. After crossing an unfenced common, turn left at the Fat Lamb Inn. Follow the road through Ravenstonedale, turning left at the Black Swan Hotel. Bear right at the school. Turn left at the T-junction. Continue, passing the Kings Head Hotel (set back, on your left) until you see a sign for Greenside. Turn left here. Low Greenside is the first farm on the left.

By train from Kirkby Stephen station (4 miles): on the famous Settle-Carlisle line, you can take a bus or book a taxi. For up-to-date timetables and taxi numbers, contact Kirkby Stephen Tourist Information Centre.

Local attractions

Ravenstonedale village about 10 minutes' walk from the farm has two country pubs with riverside gardens, both serving food and real ales. There's also a village grocery shop, playground, public tennis court, nine and 18-hole golf course and a small art gallery.

There are plenty of interesting local walks and bike rides in the region – several start at the farm gate – including country walks with refreshments to be had at a pub or café en route. The Howgill Fells are a few minutes' stroll up the lane for walking and mountain biking.

Nearby you can go pony trekking or trout fishing - catch one and barbecue it later (the trout not the pony...).

The market towns of Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Sedbergh are all within a few miles, each with its own attractions. The farm owners will keep you up to date with events in the area, such as local shows and festivals, farmers' markets and other rural happenings.

There's excellent access for days out in both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales but none of the busy vibe you can find elsewhere in tourist areas. The Eden Valley is equally scenic and doesn't get busy.

Information on all the above is available at the site. There's also a visitor information centre in Kirkby Stephen.
