Coalbeck Caravan Park: View from the end of the lane where the bus stops

General

  • Quiet and secluded site with spectacular views of the Lake District
  • Five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake; 15 to Keswick, Cockermouth
  • Spa next door; five minutes' walk to the Lake District Wildlife Park

Could trips to Cumbria get any more spectacular than at this serene site…? Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds.

Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?).

Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast.

If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Lovely, small, quiet site. Perfect for exploring northern lakes and for relatively traffic free bike rides. Cockermouth (6 or 7 miles away) nearest shops. Pub in Bassenthwaite just over a mile away. Only 5 pitches and each is allocated its own loo! Only 1 shower, but never really too long to wait. Did have to buy a small mirror in order to shave (only 1 small hand basin in toilet block, not suitable for shavers).
Would definitely go back, if only for Sid’s weather forecasts!

The setting - great for walking and exploring the area. Stayed for a week and found plenty of walks at low and high level. Skiddaw via Ulluck pike do-able in a day. Easy access to bus stops to travel further afield if desired.
This a small and well maintained site. Pitches are clearly marked with ample room for Motorhome on hard standing and awning on grass.
Each pitch is allocated use of its own cubicle in the very clean toilet/shower block. Always plenty of hot water for shower and washing up.
The owners - Sid and Liz were brilliant - very friendly, chatty and helpful. They even laid on pretty good weather!!
Wi-fi is available but we didn’t make use of it.

We loved how lovely the people on site were, with it being so small everyone spoke to everyone.
The owners are super helpful with giving advice on close walks near by and cheap places to park in Keswick.
The toilets are nice and clean.
Great location next to the wildlife park and close walks near by. We would certainly return

    Disliked:

The bathroom floor and walls could do with an update but it was also always clean.

Local attractions

For ambles around art galleries and wanders in Wordsworth House and Garden, Keswick is eight miles away. Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls.

Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car.

To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away.

If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.

Must see

  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (3.2 miles)
  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (5.5 miles)
  • Castlerigg Stone Circle (7.7 miles)
