General

  • Single ensuite camping pod in a Cumbrian wildlife haven
  • 15 minutes' walk from the medieval village of Cartmel
  • With wetroom, heater, Freeview TV and fridge

A stand-alone pod in the Cumbrian countryside, on the edge of the Lake District National Park, near the Yorkshire Dales National Park and only three miles from the coast at Grange-over-Sands is what one might call perfectly placed – and that’s before one adds in its proximity to medieval village Cartmel, famed home of the famed (in sensible dwellings at least) sticky toffee pudding.

Set 15 minutes' walk from Cartmel, this is a wildlife haven site, with locals like buzzards, herons, deer, badgers and rare flutterbys all spottable in the locale because of its mild climate and valley position (the park is also an award-winner for its approach to wildlife and its conservation policy, so if you’re a nature nut, ask knowledgeable owner Dave for good areas to spot).

It's just one 'lodge-t' on site all to guests’ own very selves, meaning that those who savour solitude should find things sweet. The lodge sleeps four in two single beds and two bunks, and has a table, chairs and cooking area outside, a kettle, fridge, heater and Freeview TV, and an indoor wetroom with shower, toilet and sink. Parking is podside for extra convenience;

Outside, plonk yourself down in the seating section for some plonk while drinking in the views; there’s a cooking area too to watch the other half dishing up dinner. For those who don’t think holidays are a time for cooking, there are two excellent food pubs, the Royal Oak and the Kings Arms, less than a mile away in Cartmel. Sweet…

Clean and tidy pod, which is well kept. The fridge, kettle, microwave and TV are nice touches in this price bracket. Ideally located for the Lakes, with plenty of nice shops and pubs available down the road in Cartmel. We found the pod warm and the shower provided plenty of hot water. There's a nice picnic bench outside and an additional table and chairs. Despite being in the owners garden, we didnt feel over looked - there is screen/hedge which is more than adequate.

    Disliked:

We weren't aware that the key to the pod would be left and you don't "check in" or speak with the owners at any point (the confirmation email from Pitch Up didnt state this, so we felt we received a frosty reception, but I now realise why). Cooking can be very difficult in bad weather as there is no cover over the cooking area. Despite it being August we had quite a lot of wind and rain, so a cover would definitely be a useful addition. We also found washing up difficult as there's no sink or proper area for washing up, just a hot water tap outside, and a drain to tip water down. Make sure you take toilet roll and hand soap, there was no mention of this when we booked, so we had to nip to the shop when we arrived. Other things to note - the matresses are extremely uncomfortable (you can feel the springs) and the floor of the wet room stays very wet after a shower (a mop is provided though, which you'll definitely need to use after each shower).

    Where to start?!
Just back from a perfect weekend stay at this gorgeous little lodge.
Received a lovely welcome and all weekend nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. What a lovely friendly family!
You could be fooled into believing that you were the first people to ever stay here as it was so perfectly clean and tidy!
Wonderfully situated and very private with a screen and bushes right up the side of the pitch. We happily sat out round the firepit until the early hours and didn't feel overlooked once.
The facilities were excellent and the lodge was really cosy. Loved that there was a little bathroom inside the lodge, the shower pressure was spot on too.
The site is perfectly situated within a short drive to anything touristy you may want to do but is so peaceful and quiet - we can't wait to return!
In my opinion, such excellent value for money.
Thank you Khan family for your fabulous hospitality.

It was cosy, loved the lodge it was peacefully and quiet. Pub was only 15 min walk away. My dogs loved being there we had some fantastic walks with great scenery.

    Disliked:

No cover over cooking area, weather wasn't on our side so trying to cook in the snow yes snow in April with no shelter was awful. We also had to dogs with us but due to all the slate outside the lodge we couldn't put them outside unless on the grass area on a tether, usually when we go camping we put the wind breakers up make a little garden so they have freedom but due to slate couldn't get windbreaker in ground. Maybe consider changing the sofa that is supposed to pull out into a bed to an actual double sofa bed myself and my husband had to sleep separately.

Had an absolute lovely night staying at the lodg-et in Cartmel. We was a little apprehensive after reading previous reviews from last month but we decided to go ahead and booked it anyway. We are so glad that we did because it was perfect and had everything we needed. Any problems outlined in previous reviews have been rectified and I can safely say that we will be returning hopefully at some point in the near future.

The location was good. Very near Cartmel.

    Disliked:

Very poor welcome as we were kept in pouring rain as owner seemed unaware we were to arrive. I had to show the confirmation email before she waved a hand vaguely in the direction of the 'pod'.
The pod was was unprepared for us, except it was unlocked. It was unclean and smelly. It lacked many of the things we have found in other pods of this price. There was no toilet roll, no mirror, no seating except the bed and heated by a 'greenhouse heater, ... had we not brought our own small heater we would have been frozen. We couldn't pull the second bed out from under the main bed so I had to sleep on the bottom bunk. The mattresses were cheap, covered in plastic and you could feel the springs.
Although the toilet and basin were clean the shower curtain was revolting with mould and dirt around the bottom. The hose attaching the shower head to the shower was worn, and rusty.
The outside furniture was covered in green mould and impossible to use.
The pod is in a tiny area at the side of the garden and adjacent to the owner's drive, although it was screened by a wicker fence we still felt a over looked.
We came home early. Just too uncomfortable

From the manager...

Sorry your stay was not upto your expectations. On arrival you were unsure of who you had booked your accommodation with and what you had booked. As the site has many different types of accommodation we did our best to be helpful. Inside the lodget we provide numbers and an email address to contact us for any assistance.
I am sorry you did not ask us for help during your stay.
We do not feel that our property is neglected as we have just spent £2250 on a full new wet room and a all weather picnic bench, Also we clean it to a very high standard every change over.

If you like to have no interaction with owners then this is the place for you.

    Disliked:

If you like a no frills camping experience then you can have no complaints. Unfortunately glamping it was not. Blinds on the door were missing a number of slats so you could be viewed by anybody passing. Heating available appears to be a large towel radiator as no heat transferred into the hut. Also the pictures of the accommodation are slightly misleading as the plot is tiny and is in the bottom of the owners garden at the entrance to their property.

From Junction 36 - M6

Leave the M6 and take the A590 signposted Barrow. After 3 miles the road changes to the A591 (signposted for Kendal). At this point, leave that dual carriageway and follow the signs for Barrow. At the roundabout, follow the B5277 going through the town of Grange and then the village of Allithwaite. Take a sharp left onto Templand Lane, turn right into The Pastures, turn in at the first right and the camping pod is on the left-hand side. Park outside and the key will be in the door inside the pod.

Local attractions

Whether you’re into activities or attractions, there’s much to see and do crammed into this area: stick to the local villages and walking routes, explore the Lake District, take to the water for sailing and surfing, cruise around the coast or stride around the Yorkshire Dales (and bring your camera; these are all sites of spectacular scenery).

Cartmel village is popular with visitors of all ilks too: the 12th-century Priory Church of St Mary and St. Michael founded by Augustine monks is its most popular attraction, has regular events and concerts and sees over 60,000 visitors a year (there’s also a monthly food market in its grounds selling fresh local produce and goods).

Cartmel Racecourse also pulls in big crowds for its size on its May and August bank holiday meets – and you do know that Cartmel is the place to pick up (lots of) sticky toffee pudding…?

As well as Cartmel, those who want to leave the car behind will find enough in the area to do: famous Holker Hall and Gardens once belonged to Cartmel’s Priory and is one of the best-known historic houses in Cumbria. It’s within walking distance and there are more walks around its gorgeous gardens (the Cavendish Walk to the Sunken Garden is suitable for wheelchairs and prams).

The holiday resort Grange-over-Sands is three miles away, as are the seven islands of Morecambe Bay, including the nature haven Walney Island which has a bird observatory, two nature reserves and two sandy beaches to rockpool at.

If you’re more driven, a car ride of five miles or so will land you at Backbarrow for the Lakeland Motor Museum and Campbell Legend Bluebird Exhibition and around 30,000 exhibits assembled over five decades. Ulverston, a market town with local produce on sale twice weekly, is also about five miles away.
