General

  • Secluded and peaceful base from which to explore the western lakes
  • Hot showers and hairdryers available on site
  • Dogs welcome and barbecues allowed

Off to the western lakes but want to wander lonely as a cloud instead of being there jam-packed in crowds? Have a look at Whinfell Farm Camp Site: it's secluded, medium sized and in a winning position for scouting around Cockermouth, Buttermere and the highlights of the western Lake District.

The site has simple amenities including hot showers, hairdryers and a washing-up room with a freezer and laundry facilities. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they're kept on leads.

Whinfell also allows barbecues (not campfires, please): just remember to keep them off the ground to prevent damage to the turf. If you want to eat out, the Wheatsheaf Inn is less than half a mile away and serves meals as well as local Jennings ales.

Everything. We arrived later then planned. We got stuck in the wrong field. And the owner refused to pull us out until 9am the next morning. No good with a toddler. We finally got out thanks to friendly campers. We left a night early. Waste of time and money.

Bad weather previously meant ground was soft. But the warden, Andrew, was very helpful.
Overflowing bin - the overflow could have been bagged and tidied up.

Overall would probably stay again, not very prepared for bad weather. 30/08/2017

*The free freezer available to freeze blocks/food
    *The friendly owner/manager
*The showers - free and 'normal' so you don't have to keep turning them on when they've run out
*USB and normal sockets for charging phones etc in both toilets and washing up area and hairdryer in ladies toilet

    Disliked:

The site could do with improvements, the owner/manager was clearly (despite being friendly) overwhelmed with the bad weather and bookings. We had contacted by email several days earlier asking about changing one of the non-electric pitches to electric and had to reply. On arrival it was clear was because he hadn't had time to read/respond to emails.
There are two pitching sites, one had pitches with reserved signs on (we had reserved two pitches weeks earlier) and was probably drivable, the other had reserved signs in the mud at the entrance to stop people driving onto it. We were directed onto that one and told to pitch up "there or there" with a vague gesture to a couple of different corner spaces, one of which would have meant us pitching next to the entrance to a tent already there and both of which were at the end next to the road which sometimes proved noisy. We chose the other one but had to pitch virtually in the bushes to ensure the other tent which was en route would fit.
Because the ground wasn't fit for driving on we had to carry a lot of heavy things over lots of mud to pitch and then park where cars (including us) ended up being blocked in, not set up for cars needing to park in bad weather.
The shower/toilet/washing block could use updating with regards to it needing a thorough clean and fix of things like benches in both showers. A hand drier or paper towels and more toilet paper (it occasionally ran out in both toilets).
They could do with a member of staff to run reception, at least in the summer.
More electric pitches would be good.
A shop with things like milk would be great. We needed some on a Sunday, there were signs advising of a local shop and a shop in the local pub but the shop was closed for the day and the pub hadn't had a shop "for years" (though they very kindly gave us some milk in a take away cup).

A very nice quiet site, well layed out in small sheltered ares

    Disliked:

The toilet and washing block is in need of a little attention. Unfortunately there had been a lot of rain and the site had quite a lot of muddy ares.

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire.

On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as their more central counterparts, such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass.

Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as 'England's only true mountain forest'. It's one of the 'Super 6' mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre.

Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path.

And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
