|Liked for its eight own-brewed ales and lots of bottled beers in three interesting bars - each with a different atmosphere from quietly chatty to sporty (décor reflecting this with unusual pictures of old Cockermouth to up-to-date sporting memorabilia), also framed beer mats, various bottles, jugs and books, log fire, good choice of traditional food; background music; no dogs; children welcome, public car park round the back, open all day Sat in summer||Bitter End
|Handsome old building with shop-front windows, ales such as Barngates, Dent, Hesket Newmarket and Thwaites, good choice of foreign beers and of wines by the glass, fair-priced interesting light snacks, two woodburners (one in back family room with some ancient stripped brick), slate flagstones by counter on left, bare boards on right, polychrome tiles of a former corridor floor dividing the two, comfortably cushioned window seats and a couple of high-backed settles, big Lakeland landscape photographs, traditional pub games; background music; dogs allowed in bar, back courtyard below lawn sloping up to church, open from 3pm||1761.0
