General

  • Secluded and peaceful base from which to explore the western lakes
  • Hot showers and hairdryers available on site
  • Dogs welcome and barbecues allowed

Off to the western lakes but want to wander lonely as a cloud instead of being there jam-packed in crowds? Have a look at Whinfell Farm Camp Site: it's secluded, medium sized and in a winning position for scouting around Cockermouth, Buttermere and the highlights of the western Lake District.

The site has simple amenities including hot showers, hairdryers and a washing-up room with a freezer and laundry facilities. Well-behaved dogs are welcome as long as they're kept on leads.

Whinfell also allows barbecues (not campfires, please): just remember to keep them off the ground to prevent damage to the turf. If you want to eat out, the Wheatsheaf Inn is less than half a mile away and serves meals as well as local Jennings ales.

We liked the quietness of the site and the location. The showers and washing up facilities had hot water every time.

    Disliked:

The site got very wet and muddy as there was a lot of heavy rain but this is the Lake District so we came prepared.

Andrew met us outside and showed us to the pitch, his mobile number was on the window of the reception so I felt comfortable that I could text or call him if I had any problems (which I didn't). There were freezer packs in the washing area which could be borrowed (which I found extremely helpful) and there was a freezer to store any food in which was also a nice touch which a lot of campsites do not facilitate. I have seen bad reviews about the showers and washing facilities HOWEVER when arriving I noticed the showers where all clean and working well - a lot of campsites I have stayed at before the showers go cold after 5 minutes, however the showers stay warm and have good water pressure. The bathrooms do get muddy as I have seen on previous review, however when it is muddy I don't see how this can be avoided, the only 'dirty' part of the showers are the floors which are muddy from other people's shoes (which could be avoided is people wiped their shoes properly before entering the bathrooms, was not the owners fault) - I Noticed the bathroom was cleaned on a regular basis (appeared to be as least two times a day) and the women's bathroom had lovely soap and incense sticks, which is a lovely touch. The location is lovely and the pitch sizes are generous. The owner, Andrew came out as soon as we arrived and was around the campsite through out the visits if we have any problems. All the bathrooms / washing up area is close to the campsites and the bathrooms are well lit at night. Overall I think for the price this is a good campsite in an amazing location. I would defiantly pay more for this type of pitch and will be planning another stay here.

    Disliked:

We did leave two days early, however this was purely because of the weather and nothing to do with the campsite or the facilities. The owner did advise people to park on the farm yard however people drove onto the field instead which did make it a lot muddier - this isn't a criticism to the campsite - just think if the other people staying at the campsite was more considerate of the wet weather then the muddiest could have been avoided - but all the owners can do is advise people of the best place to park and if people don't listen then it is out of their control. A campsite cannot help if it rains, it appeared the field had stones underneath to help with draining, I personally feel that a lot of the bad reviews are down to people not listening to advise from the owner on where to park in the campsite, there is parking facilities off of the field which could easily fit a fair amount of cars on.

This was a terrible site in a muddy field Don't think it was suitable for large touring vans We bashed the side of our van getting into field The other field was so boggy we were advised not to go into it The showers and toilets were of a poor standard decor and cleanliness wise The sink drain ran into an uncovered drain We had to be towed out the morning we left Would not recommend this site to anyone

From the manager...

Thanks for the great review!
May I suggest that you join the Caravan Club, if you aren't already members...
I should accuse you of hypocrisy/back-stabbing, since you were perfectly nice to my face, then submit a review like this.

The people at the campsite were friendly and welcoming. The campsite is only a short drive away from cockermouth. We had a great time and will be back again

    Disliked:

The only down side was the mud to the entrance of the pitches it could have done with a few ton off gravel on it we had to get other campers to help push our car out at 1 point as it was stuck. The people next to us had to get the owner with his tractor to pull their camper van in

The location. Hot water in the shower. The facilities clean, but with so much mud it was impossible to kip it.

    Disliked:

I didn't like my stay because the access to the pitch was always flood and I had problems to get out the car. Don't have any place to wash clothes. The toilet is in the middle of the showers, and there's not any private space. The bin was completely full and we need to put the garbage on the floor.
I had some noisy neighbours and no one ask them to be quiet.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review.
We have had around two and a half weeks of rain, sometimes it feels like longer. The ground is saturated, it has never been 'flooded'. I have encouraged people to park in the farmyard, or on other firm ground. if anyone asks me, I will happily tow them out with the tractor. There are no laundry facilities at the moment, but there are laundrettes in Cockermouth and Keswick.
I am not sure what you mean ' the toilet is in the middle of the showers', all have doors on, so are private. I think I deserve more than 4/10 for cleanliness, as I clean the facilities twice a day. There is a lot of refuse and I try to keep it tidy, there will be an extra wheelie bin next year.
My phone number is on the office window and any paperwork that you print off from Pitch-up, you could have phoned or texted me to complain about the noise, I would have responded and asked the party in question to be quiet.

Very sheltered so wind not a problem

    Disliked:

Access to fields when very wet was a challenge, the weather can't be helped but it may be useful to think about extra gravel etc

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire.

On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as their more central counterparts, such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass.

Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as 'England's only true mountain forest'. It's one of the 'Super 6' mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre.

Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path.

And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
