General

  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away

For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a break – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw…

Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over…

The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is excellent for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other).

Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive.

Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The washing-up area is not in operation due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Great family welcome. Very friendly staff, and always willing to listen to constructive criticism. This is a relatively new site, and there are still a few rough edges. the location is fantastic as a base, and provides ready access to attraction in the northern Lake District, Carlisle, Silloth, Dumfries, and Hadrians Wall, all of which are within an hours drive. There is a Dobbies Garden Centre, and a large Foodhall nearby, but we didn't use them. The local village, Dalston, has a couple of good pubs with very good pub food. There is also a nice cafe in Dalston. At the time of our visit our fellow campers were mostly well behaved and friendly, and the noise stopped precisely at 11pm every night. The local train station provides a service to Carlisle, so no need to take the car there is you want to have a few beers.

    Disliked:

The owners operate a "freeform" approach to pitch boundaries, and we found the site a little tight on space when we arrived. We have suggested to the owners that better pitch boundary demarkation would prevent the "land grab" attitude that some fellow campers seemed to have. The site is very open, so it will be badly affected by adverse weather. The services, while adequate, and well presented, were a bit sparse. The disabled toilet provides the only hand basin that had a mirror. We suggested to the owners that they might like to consider offering an ice block freezing facility.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your feedback and kind words. We are constantly adapting and implementing new things for the benefit of our guests.
Since your stay every toilet now has a mirror and we are looking to install more showers.
We hope to see you again, many thanks x

The toilets would have been a mess as the facilities are currently closed. I messaged the number on the booking to advise of this. Sorry that the message didn't get to you.

We stayed here over the May bank holiday weekend. It's a small, well kept, quiet site with plenty of space between pitches. The shower and toilet blocks were clean and in good condition. We thought the location was great, Carilse was only a 10/15 minute drive away and attractions like Hadrian's Wall were nearby. The owners were friendly, laid back and on hand if you needed anything. We'd definitely stay here again, it suited us down to the grouind.

Thanks for your feedback, we have problems with our address as there are two Cardewlees Farm's and they split the postcode. I will have a look into this. Pleased you enjoyed your stay. Nice comments mean that little bit more during this difficult time.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too.

To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below.

Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
