  • Luxury glamping 20 minutes’ drive from Penrith in the Eden Valley
  • North Pennines 10 minutes’ drive and the Lake District 20 minutes
  • Well-designed units with exclusive-use showers and camping kitchens
It’s not all about location at Wild in Style, although its Eden Valley setting is pretty fabulous – 20 minutes’ drive from Penrith in Cumbria, on the edge of the North Pennines and within easy reach of the Lake District fells. It’s also about luxury – namely the bespoke furnishings and high level of comfort in the glamping accommodation. All fully insulated to ensure the northern weather stays outside, these gorgeous bespoke units are set on a 36-acre family-run farm where some of the land is being turned back over to wildlife and native plants. They’re approached along woodland trails, each tucked into trees and completely private, with its own compost loo, hot shower, firepit, picnic table and camping kitchen with everything you need – from stove to cutlery – to prepare family meals. Inside the accommodation all is colourful designer flourishes on proper beds, comfy sofas and oodles of storage space, and you’re guaranteed cosy warmth thanks to the woodburning stoves. Treats include solar-powered lighting and USB charging points, extra blankets in case of chilly weather, vases of wildflowers and board games to keep you all entertained. The welcoming site owners are on hand to advise on things to do in the local area, on the best spots to lose the crowds and where’s best to eat out.

Liked: Amazing remote wild location, great facilities, luxury yurt. Beautiful place, both setting & the yurt. Great location for North East Lake District, North Pennines, Cumbria, and Hadrian’s Wall/part of Scottish Border. Lovely and warm with the wood burning stove lit. First big basket of logs included. My family saw a deer and barn owl. Loved having the place to ourselves, felt secluded in a good way and away from TVs etc. Good eco credentials. I liked the miniml toiletries as we have those at our local refill shop at home. Loved being in the north of the UK! Lots of trees and wildlife. Well equipped.

Disliked: Distance between the yurt and the cooking hut/toilet was not ideal, but understandable because of the lay of the land in valley.

Local attractions

History looms large in north-west England. You can visit the Neolithic stone circle at Castlerigg (40 minutes’ drive), and amble up Askham Fell (35 minutes) to the Bronze Age burial mound at White Raise Cairn. There are 6,000-year-old rock carvings at Copt Howe (an hour), and of course, a bunch of hikes and cycle rides between ancient Roman forts and encampments along Hadrian’s Wall (50 minutes). You have easy access to the scenic valley and fell landscapes of the Lake District National Park (20 minutes), where active types can get physical on horse riding, paragliding, scree-running or ghyll-scrambling expeditions, or go wild swimming, paddleboarding or kayaking on Ullswater (half an hour). The North Pennines National Landscape (10 minutes) is there for your taking as well; follow the River Tees-side walk up to spectacular High Force waterfall (50 minutes), or discover the wild beauty of the region’s heather moors and peatlands aboard a steam-train ride on South Tynedale Railway (half an hour).
