The pub

General

  • Spectacular rural views from your pitch
  • Relax in peace at an adults-only site
  • Excellent location for walkers just off the Pennine Way

If you know your Brontë, you'll be fairly sure of what to find around Wuthering Heights Inn a mile and a half from Haworth in West Yorkshire: remoteness, wild moors, wild hikes and scenery to write home about. (And if you don't know your Brontë, tsk; but this is the best setting in the world to finally read Wuthering Heights.)

This is remote camping with a wild feel – but with a pub just steps away and easily accessible to Yorkshire market towns like Skipton, Saltaire and Hebden Bridge as well as the cities of Leeds and Bradford. It's just off both the Pennine and Millennium Ways: have a wild hike while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff.

The tiny site at Wuthering Heights is hidden from view behind the inn and accessed down a flight of 30 steps; there's no vehicle access so while it's splendidly secluded and peaceful, it isn't suitable for those with mobility issues. Toilets and a shower are available all day, and food is served in the pub every lunchtime and on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The site also has a utility room with fridge, washing-up facilities, a radiator with drying rack, a kettle and sockets for phone charging, hairdryers etc. For security reasons this is kept locked, but keys are available for a £10 deposit, refundable on return of the key.

Wuthering Heights is a peaceful place, so the team asks guests to respect fellow guests and local residents by keeping noise to a minimum.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The camping field is behind the pub and is accessed by foot down a flight of thirty steps. The toilet, shower and washing-up area are at the rear or the pub up the steps.

Cute cabins, great facilities, lovely pub. A walkers paradise!08/11/2020

We stayed in Emily, one of the 2 shepherds huts onsite. The hut was super cute, and more roomy than we expected, and the log burner was very welcome after a day walking to Top Withins and back. The folks running the pub and campsite were lovely - we had a veggie breakfast in the morning, and then we ate in the pub in the evening too - great options for vegetarians and vegans, as well as some lovely looking meat based meals, too.

Don't let the talk of the steps down to the cabins put you off - they're fine, and the view you wake up to in the morning (unless it's raining!) is sublime. I'm pretty certain that we'll be returning after lockdown, and I'd highly recommend the place.

    Disliked:

Due to it being a little later in the year, we had some pretty rough weather, but when the sun came out it was lovely - I'll let them off for that! The cabins probably wouldn't be great for families with kids, as there's only one bed, but again I don't think this would be an issue.

If they could stretch the wifi down to where the cabins were that would be awesome, but again... maybe the lack of signal is a good thing when you consider how peaceful the place is - it really forces you to look out of the window.

    Everything!
The cabin fire kicked out some glorious heat. we had to open up the windows and doors as it was like a Sauna. Perfect for those raining cold days.
Loved the little details such as the teas, coffee, hot choccies and biscuits available for our stay. We also forgot plates and bowls but the hut also had these in abundance and they doubled up as cute decoration.
The shower facilities and washroom were amazing. You imagine a camping shower to be cold with no pressure, well you'd be wrong. Their shower was glorious. Could have stayed in it all day.

    Disliked:

The only thing we disliked and the company could do nothing about this, was the weather! It was so rainy and wet when we went that we couldn't appreciate the moors. We will 100% be coming back in Summer time as it was perfect. A little cute thing to add to the hut though would be to maybe add a couple of walking brochures highlighting good walking spots, all because we were lazy and didn't do any research before hand.

Wow! Where to start...There are a couple of Shepards' huts with a small area for tents to pitch up at the bottom of a flight of stairs off the pub car park. There was plenty of space to pitch up, the ground is flat and it is well maintained. There is a public footpath that runs by the end of the property so there are the occasional passers by to distract you from the fantastic view. At the back of the inn, there are toilets and piping hot shower as well as a small, basic (fridge, kettle, sink) kitchen which are all available for the use of the campers. They were spotlessly clean and warm. It was great to be able to make a cup of tea before heading off for the day.
The pub itself is welcoming and has a lovely menu. It, like the camping are is dog friendly.
    The setting is idyllic.

    Disliked:

This is minor but... you have to park in the inn car park and lug the tent and gear down the steps. This is made clear before booking and is only a slight irritation and would not put me off a return visit. The steps are well lit at night.

Local attractions

Scenery-filled hikes on the surrounding moors are minutes away from Wuthering Heights Inn, and within 45 minutes you can be at Top Withens which inspired the Brontë book. (Again, wild hikes while reciting the rather impassioned lines of Heathcliff are recommended.)

Both the Pennine Way and the Millennium Way are close by, and cyclists can follow part of the Tour de France Yorkshire route through Knaresborough, Silsden, Keighley, Haworth, Hebden Bridge and Elland.

Five minutes by car or 20 minutes by foot will take Brontë buffs to their former home at Haworth, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, and to join the Keighley and Worth Valley steam train (yes, this is the one in The Railway Children) or wander up the town's cobbled main street. Hebden Bridge and its markets are also a short drive away.

At the nearby World Heritage Site of Saltaire, arty sorts should like the Hockney exhibition in Salts Mill and heritage buffs the preserved mill workers' town, once a dry spot (shudder) but now with bars, bistros and shops aplenty.

About 15 miles away, Skipton has access to the Yorkshire Dales and its villages, caves, spectacular scenery and miles more walks: be sure to take your copy of Wuthering Heights here too.

Must see

  • Bronte Parsonage Museum (1.2 miles)
