  • Family-friendly site in scenic Pennines surroundings
  • Bar on site open Friday and Saturday; firepits and logs for hire
  • Traditional camping experience on the outskirts of Hebden Bridge
Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them. The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist town of Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes. There's great dog-walking terrain in all directions too. It’s all about the relaxing back to basics camping experience here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire. The easily accessible fields are flat and drained. If you’re out of nosh or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, the site has a food shack and bar on site open on Fridays and Saturdays, where you can tuck into bacon butties and local brewed ales. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some bits for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a evening meal.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: I booked very last minute on a cold, foggy day in February, but still got a warm welcome. The owner made sure I had everything I needed including offering a choice of where to park up (I'm a car camper) and a place to charge by phone etc. Only basic facilities were available (toilets and drinking water) because it was off-season, but this was as advertised, so was what I was expecting.

Disliked: The entrance to the camping field was a little narrow, but I think that might be fix for summer. There were no lights in the toilets, so headtorch was needed even during the day.

Liked: Personaly speaking, i like this kind of site very much. Not posh, but not with that distastful comercial feel either. One mans (Iggy..an ex hillfarmer) labour of love... has grown this site into what it is... basic , but with creativity and a sense of fun. Iggy is a down to earth kinda guy... not a strict rule player, but more open and laid back. The site is elevated above most of the surrounding area , making for good views and the small 'on site shop' is an added niceness just for making life easier! Good value for money.... wud definatly stay again if in the area! Cheers Iggy!

Liked: Lovely views, friendly people, only £10 per night with toilets and drinking water. Gorgeous area to explore!! Stayed in my camper with my cat…who also had a little explore around near the van 😻 Decided to stay 2 more nights and there is an open Mike night and bar opened tonight so I’m looking forward to that! I’ll definitely be back. Xx

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice bar to sit at. Drinks were very cheap! Bought a fire pit and wood for £15 that they brought round to you. Good night overall for a couple wanting to get away. Nice country road on the way up with nice views.

Disliked: The toilets were very unhygienic. The men kept using the women’s toilets. Lots of loud, rowdy people playing loud music. Which we didn’t mind to much because we didn’t have out children with us, but I definitely wouldn’t bring children to the site. It was very confined and not really enough room for the amount of people staying theyre. We was very on top of each other. There wasn’t very much lighting. It was sort of “the hills of eyes” and “wrong turn” kind of vibe 😅 if you like punk/country music then it will be perfect for you, but wasn’t really our kind of music or our kind of people staying they’re. I’d say slightly over priced compared to others I’ve stayed at which were a lot more clean and organised. There were a few young lads there who helped us out with any questions and who served out drinks, but awkward to talk to. We love abit of Yorkshire banter and get along with most people but like I said they just wasn’t our type of folk. The ground its self was fairly bumpy and over grown. We couldn’t get out pegs in because there was so many rocks underneath us. I would go again but only if I was in the mood for a bit of drinking and partying type of camp, not for a nice quite family get away.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: First time I've ever turned up at a site and felt the need to leave and go elsewhere. We were told to find a spot in the upper field or secluded area but they were so full and cramped that we struggled to find anywhere. It's advertised as family friendly but there was a lot of shouting and swearing. There was a definite smell of cannabis in the air and really loud dance music blearing out. It generally just had a really bad vibe about it. I also noticed that there was a lovely large field with only one tent in it but even though everywhere else was completely full we were told we couldn't use it as its just for events ?

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts. There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting, at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes' drive), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade. Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera. Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s…
