General

  • Family-friendly site in village used as location for Emmerdale
  • Bar, playground, games room and function room
  • 10 miles from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 11 from Leeds

Spacious pitches, scenic Yorkshire surroundings, proximity to Leeds, and a pint in the Emmerdale pub of the Woolpack all await at Esholt Sports Club, a family-friendly site set in the village used as the location for the TV soap.

It's all in scenic countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire village of Esholt, two miles east of Shipley, five miles north of Bradford and 11 miles west of Leeds. Esholt found fame as the original setting of Emmerdale: fans of the show will probably recognise several other village locations while here. (And whether you're a fan or not, a pint at the Woolpack is probably a top idea...)

The pitches and facilities of the site are within the grounds of Esholt Sports & Leisure, which has a well-stocked bar, a playground, a games room and a function room available for hire. Amenities for guests include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Esholt is well placed for visiting heaps of Yorkshire attractions, such as the museums of Leeds and Bradford, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Large site, plenty of room, quiet area not much passing traffic, perfect ground for camping easy to pitch tent but ground soft enough to be comfy.

    Disliked:

Piece of large machinery(cherry picker) being started up at 8am on 1st morning = rude awakening! Person who appeared to have a permanent caravan pitch driving round the site a speed with blaring music then having a screaming match with another resident swearing obscenities at the top of his voice, highly aggressive. The leaflet we were given had a number on for any problems, when we rang it turned out it was the person the aggressive man was screaming at, they'd asked the man to turn the music down & stop swearing all sorted. The man continued to shout & swear, he was smashing up either his car or caravan, my kids were petrified. It's a shame this incident happened as it's an ok site, however the incident & the fact it was nit dealt with did put a damper on our stay, wish I'd ignored my husband & just phoned the police. Some site support & stopping idiots like that staying on the site would be great improvement.

Really nice staff, loads of room for the kids to play. 01/08/2017

A really nice campsite. We were greeted by the owner on arrival who told us in which area we were to pitch our tent, and were then left to get sorted which was nice. He later popped over that evening so that we could pay the remaining monies owed. This was great as the kids wanted out of the car and didn't have to wait around as soon as we got there for all the paperwork to be sorted out.

There is loads of room for the kids to run about, kick a football and generally have fun. And all the people we met there were really friendly, and of an evening the camp site was pretty quiet.

The local area is lovely, its was a joy to stay at this site.

    Disliked:

We didn't dislike anything. The toilets were a little walk from where we were pitched, but that wasn't really that much of a hardship.

Good location, easy walk to local pub. Amazing wildlife. Friendly staff who were helpful.

    Disliked:

Communal loo and showers were a unique experience! Literature said washing machines on site, but there were not, although staff said they were getting some soon.
The site is fairly basic and I think some improvements could be made, without spending a huge amount of money.

Local attractions

As it's Yorkshire, walks among spectacular scenery are all around: make for the Yorkshire Dales National Park 10 miles away to access many miles' worth as well among traditional villages and old market towns. If you're feeling a tad inactive, tour the park by car; if not, other adrenalised activities including mountain biking, horse riding, caving, gorge scrambling or open-water swimming.

For towns and shopping, Otley, Ilkley and Skipton are all nearby: Otley (six miles) is a Walkers Are Welcome town and has a number of walking trails that start and end in the town; Ilkley has a toy museum and walks onto Ilkley Moor to see the Cow and Calf rock formation (nine miles), and Skipton (18 miles) is where you'll find the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and barge trips on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

Four miles away is the famed village of Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several galleries and exhibitions including works by the artist David Hockney, who grew up in Bradford. There's an 11-day festival in the town every September and the Saltaire Arts Trail arts festival runs every May.

The nightlife, shopping, restaurants and museums of Bradford and Leeds are five and 11 miles away.

Must see

  • National Media Museum (4.6 miles)
