  • Wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham
Customer service is the name of the game at The High Hermitage Holiday Park, a peaceful place in the Northumberland countryside where staff are always on hand to deal with queries or concerns, and to keep the amenities up to high standards. The landscape includes ancient woodland and the site's own stream, Kitty's Burn, all in a wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham via a few friendly local pubs. Many guests use the park as a base for the Northumberland coast; other famed destinations like Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle are within easy reach. The High Hermitage is less than a mile from Prudhoe railway station, where you can access trains to Newcastle, Carlisle, Hexham and Glasgow. Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit at reception.

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: The total serenity of this park made it so that we didn't want to leave. It was quiet, and sheltered from the northerly winds. The pitches are huge and offer EHU, water and grey waste facilities, and they even have a picnic table next to them for when you might want to enjoy an al-fresco meal next to your pitch. We had a great welcome from their very friendly warden (Gordon) and he took us to our pitch, and made sure we were settled in, and knew where everything was. There is a large area dedicated to static (or more permanent) homes and this was set back from the touring element of the park, and there were some beautiful homes there and in a perfect sun spot too. The touring area of the park is undergoing some changes, and whilst there are only about 7 hardstanding pitches, there is room for loads on the grassed area, some have EHU too. There is an old area for washing pots and again this is due to be rebuilt in the next year or so. We had the chance to speak to the park owner who confirmed the changes that are happening. The location is right in the River Tyne valley, and you can walk (about 3/4 mile) to the next village (Ovingham) and there is a wonderful pub called The White Swan where the food is wonderful! This is also a lovely dog walk too. There are no specific dog facilities at High Hermitage Holiday Park, but with the walks nearby, it isn't a big need. Night times are quiet and peaceful. As it is set back from the road, there is little to no road-noise - the only sounds we heard was the wind blowing through the trees that were sheltering us, and the birds.

Disliked: It isn't a real dislike, and the owner knows that they need updating, the bathrooms are older, and not as modern as some places. That said they are perfectly servicable, they are clean, smell lovely and if you are touring or camping and need to use them, then they work perfectly well. Some people have complained about them, and yes, they need updating, but that too is on the agenda for the park. As the park is undergoing some work, it does mean that there is building and plant machinery close by or coming through the park. It doesn't intefere with your experience that much, but it can be a little noisy at times. My advice would be to take it into consideration if you are planning on staying there.

Fully-serviced gravel touring pitch

Liked: Having a fully serviced pitch was great, the hard standing was plenty big enough and level with room for our awning to be partly on the gravel also. Very dog friendly. The warden was very helpful and greeted us on arrival, explained where all the facilities were and was available anytime for questions or just a friendly chat. A great location just off the A69 so perfect for a stopover although we were here for a few nights visiting family nearby. An easy walk/drive to the Riverside Park across a very narrow bridge. All in all in a lovely stay. The site is undergoing some development and a new shower block is planned.

Disliked: The shower block is past its best but was always clean and the water was always hot

Liked: Location of the site as a whole and arrangement including access to pitches within it. Friendly warden.

Disliked: Price I paid (Feb-2024), of £30 per night, seemed a little high all things considered. I think I would have not made this comment if it had been £28.

Local attractions

The nearby town of Prudhoe, about 11 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Norman castle and a waterpark as well as access to the old Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now the Tyne Valley Line and still running regularly between the two cities. If you're anywhere around this part of England, a must-see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, the most visited destination in the north of England, running for about 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, across the North Pennines, and along Northumberland National Park. The wall has several Roman sites along its length, including Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain; eight forts and live excavations at the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum. Paintball, quad biking, go karting, offroad 4x4 driving and a Go Ape! are all available locally. A shopping centre is 20 minutes away.
