General

  • Dog-friendly park with direct access to Kielder Forest and Pennine Way
  • Many animals to meet on site
  • Modern and well-kept amenities with free hot water

If you have a canine adventurer, prepare to bring them here. A barkingly high amount of woofsome walkies are available in the area surrounding Otterburn's dog-friendly Border Forest Caravan Park, for it has direct access from its bridge over the barn to the mighty Kielder Forest and the Pennine Way. Collar a stay here forthwith.

As you might reckon from a park so firmly animal friendly, quite a menagerie is on site too: come here to meet the three Kunekune pigs Rita, Bubble and Squeak; Bertie the Labradoodle and Marmite the Giant Schnauzer; Shetland ponies Ant and Dec (they're quite tiny); Dakota the donkey, and Blanche and her chick friends.

And as you also might reckon from all this, its location and its amicable, quiet and family-friendly feel, Border Forest Caravan Park is a popular place for Northumberland stays... Its amenities are cleanly kept and include modern ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water, and toilets, washing-up facilities and a fridge in the park's centre.

As Border Forest is a quiet park, there's no shop or club on site, but a small supermarket is a short drive away. Local village Otterburn has a café, pubs, shops and a tourist information centre.

Please note

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

We are a very quiet family-run park - there is no shop or club on site.

No single-sex parties or under 25s accepted via Pitchup.com.

Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly staff and lovely walks 02/10/2017

The pods are great. In September the thermostatically controlled electric heater was a must...especially for drying out our bike gear after the rain!
We were met on arrival and shown to the pods, things like electric heater and location of toilets, kitchen and shower were explained.
The site is in a great location if you are getting away from towns and cities. Because most people staying there are in cabins, static caravans or motorhomes, I didn't see a single person in the toilet block when showering each morning.
You can't fault the lady and gentleman who run the site - very friendly and everywhere is clean and tidy. They even offered to search around my pod when I discovered I had lost my wedding ring, upon returning home.

    Disliked:

Not related to the site, but rather a warning - the pub in Byrness village, the Forest View Walkers Inn, was closed due to illness. This means that on a Friday night there is nowhere within walking distance to get food after 7pm (when the chippy van in Byrness village leaves)...and the same for drinks!
The campsite does have a burger van visiting on Sat night, but the issue about going for a beer without driving remains.

The pod was excellent and a much better idea than staying in a tent especially for when it rains. Great location, quiet and peaceful and a well ran site. Plenty of walks and things to do. Kept my 9 yr old entertained for two days. Never needed the staff during our stay but they seemed very pleasant. Two sets of toilets on the site was very handy.

    Disliked:

Facilities are adequate but very basic. Kitchen area was full of spiders and cobwebs. Toilets were basic again. Clean but again lots of cobwebs and spiders knocking around.
Midges!! Two days and covered in bites!!

From the manager...

Hello thank you for your review and we are so pleased you enjoyed the pod, park and location.
We do have the 'wee beasties' visit us especially when the weather is damp and grey between end of May and September, so being prepared is always a good idea. We appreciate that for some, spiders and their cobwebs are unslightly ,scary or just a nuisance and as we don't have a door on the kitchen area our spider friends do have access, we rather like them especially as they eat midges, lol. But we do aim to keep the area clean particular around the fridge/freezer/microwave and sinks
We hope to see you another time:):)

The site was clean and picturesque! The staff were very friendlly, helpful and caring! It is an ideal place for either just a calm relaxing break as the site is quiet, but it's location is also ideal for visiting the many places of interest in the area! The Scottish border is only a few miles along the A68 and Edinburgh is only about 70 miles away!

From Newcastle head towards Newcastle Airport on A696, following directions to Jedburgh all the time (the A696 becomes the A68). Pass through Otterburn and the small hamlet of Rochester, and Border Forest is four miles further on the left hand side, 300 yards after Forest Drive.

From Scotland we are five miles south of the border on the A68 on the right-hand side, one mile after Byrness Village.

Local attractions

Kielder Forest is indeed mighty: this is the biggest human-made woodland in England and covers 250 acres. Roe deer roam here, many an archaeological feature and Site of Special Scientific Interest can be found, and the forest is also home to Kielder Castle, piles of walking and cycling trails, and Kielder Observatory (this is top stargazing territory too).

Also in the forest, hop along to the reservoir Kielder Water and Leaplish Waterside Park to hire fishing and pleasure boats, hide in the red squirrel hide, walk on water or try other activities like archery, crossbows, sea scooters or gymnastics.

Within an hour's drive of the site are famed Northumberland and Scottish Borders attractions like the budget-friendly Jedforest farm and animal park with native and exotic species and Mary Queen of Scots' House, both at Jedburgh; Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall (both also rather mighty); nineteenth century Cragside House, and the first-class Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. Clay pigeon shooting is also available locally.
