General

  • Dog-friendly park with direct access to Kielder Forest and Pennine Way
  • Many animals to meet on site
  • Modern and well-kept amenities with free hot water

If you have a canine adventurer, prepare to bring them here. A barkingly high amount of woofsome walkies are available in the area surrounding Otterburn's dog-friendly Border Forest Caravan Park, for it has direct access from its bridge over the barn to the mighty Kielder Forest and the Pennine Way. Collar a stay here forthwith.

As you might reckon from a park so firmly animal friendly, quite a menagerie is on site too: come here to meet the three Kunekune pigs Rita, Bubble and Squeak; Bertie the Labradoodle and Marmite the Giant Schnauzer; Shetland ponies Ant and Dec (they're quite tiny); Dakota the donkey, and Blanche and her chick friends.

And as you also might reckon from all this, its location and its amicable, quiet and family-friendly feel, Border Forest Caravan Park is a popular place for Northumberland stays... Its amenities are cleanly kept and include modern ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water, and toilets, washing-up facilities and a fridge in the park's centre.

As Border Forest is a quiet park, there's no shop or club on site, but a small supermarket is a short drive away. Local village Otterburn has a café, pubs, shops and a tourist information centre.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

We are a very quiet family-run park - there is no shop or club on site.

No single-sex parties or under 25s accepted via Pitchup.com.

Fantastic location, lots of lovely walks, unfortunately it rained a lot while we were there so we didn't get to walk as much as we would have liked as we had our 2 year old with us but we will definitely return to this site.

    Disliked:

dog dirt which we had to clean up when we got there from previous people

From the manager...

Hello and thank you for your review. Gosh it did rain but we are so pleased you want to come back,oh to be the the weather god, lol.
We also want to apologies to you on behalf of all us who are responsible doggy owners who always pick up after their fur faces. We have made a note of the people staying on your pitch before and they will NOT be welcome here again.
As a park that welcomes dogs it is made very clear on booking, at arrival and around the park that we do not tolerate the type of owner who thinks it's okay to behave in such a disgusting manner.
It is unfortunate that these few owners affect the many doggy owners who stay here who are brilliant!

The toilets and showers were out of use! So can’t comment on them.

From the manager...

As you can imagine we were very disappointed with this review particularly as it is factually incorrect,
The shower/toilet block which is at the top of the park was open and is open all year round,
the toilet block at the bottom of the park was closed and always is between November and the
end of March, as stated on the Pitch Up web site, this is because it can freeze and cause damage during the winter months.
On the door to these toilets is a notice indicating the whereabouts of the shower/toilet block
at the top of the park.
It was a shame that you did not come and see us during your 2 night stay as there is always
someone on site to help.
However we are glad you enjoyed the location

Directions

From Newcastle head towards Newcastle Airport on A696, following directions to Jedburgh all the time (the A696 becomes the A68). Pass through Otterburn and the small hamlet of Rochester, and Border Forest is four miles further on the left hand side, 300 yards after Forest Drive.

From Scotland we are five miles south of the border on the A68 on the right-hand side, one mile after Byrness Village.

Local attractions

Kielder Forest is indeed mighty: this is the biggest human-made woodland in England and covers 250 acres. Roe deer roam here, many an archaeological feature and Site of Special Scientific Interest can be found, and the forest is also home to Kielder Castle, piles of walking and cycling trails, and Kielder Observatory (this is top stargazing territory too).

Also in the forest, hop along to the reservoir Kielder Water and Leaplish Waterside Park to hire fishing and pleasure boats, hide in the red squirrel hide, walk on water or try other activities like archery, crossbows, sea scooters or gymnastics.

Within an hour's drive of the site are famed Northumberland and Scottish Borders attractions like the budget-friendly Jedforest farm and animal park with native and exotic species and Mary Queen of Scots' House, both at Jedburgh; Alnwick Castle and Hadrian's Wall (both also rather mighty); nineteenth century Cragside House, and the first-class Holy Island of Lindisfarne off the Northumberland coast. Clay pigeon shooting is also available locally.
