General

  • Back to basics camping in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Near Yorkshire's biggest natural lake for fishing and sailing
  • 15 minutes' drive from the market town of Hawes

Back to basics camping slap bang in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with weeks' worth of watery sports and other activities on the doorstep – anyone would be happy trotting along to Stable Fell Campsite, among the scenic limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales.

This is the sort of site that experienced campers call a 'find': back to basics but with very clean toilets and hot showers; friendly welcoming owners; quiet; in a wildlife haven with spectacular views; and in the countryside but conveniently sited with a heap of things to do very close by.

Lake Semerwater, Yorkshire's biggest natural lake, is a half a mile's walk from Stable Fell across the fields or a mile and a half by car, and popular with canoeists, sailors, windsurfers and anglers, who come to try their luck at the brimming stocks of bream, brown trout, perch, pike and roach.

Other outdoor options nearby? Try scenic hikes, pony trekking, deer stalking, birdwatching, cycling, mountain biking… Bainbridge, part of the 2014 Tour de France route, is just three miles away and the site has easy access to the village of Askrigg and to the market town of Hawes, 15 minutes' drive away.

Stable Fell is open all year and welcomes families, couples, quiet groups and dogs. The pitches are of unlimited size with plenty of space for all – just the ticket for setting up a campfire after a day getting active around the Dales.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Spot on site, very much back to basics, converted stables as toilets and showers was a good touch, hosts were good, no problems at all. Enjoyed making a campfire with my son, not many sites suitable for children allow fires so that was brilliant, take a BBQ grill tray, chuck it over the camp fires and have a basic BBQ with wood smoked sausages

    Disliked:

As per other people's comments, having to walk too and from the car is exciting for the kids using barrows but a bit of a pain for the adults when used to having car parked next to pitch. Due to the layout though it's understandable as cars would probably get stuck in the fields.

That u have to buy wood for the fires from them and it's quite expensive, lots of sheep poo but it's a countryside so wasn't to bothered and there was a smell by where the cars are parked

From the manager...

We're really going to have to stop our sheep driving cars!

The remote location, along with the gorgeous views. Even though the car park was full that didn't mean the site was too busy. We had plenty of room. The facilities were excellent and always clean!

Tent only site with open fires allowed. Ali was very helpful and attentive at all times. Activity toys supplied on site which kept children happy. No music, internet or mobile phones made it a relaxing time. Perfect location for walks and surrounded by wonderful hills. Would definitely book again.

    Disliked:

Toilets were basic but adequate, located in a barn so lots of spider webs . I expect them to improve over the next few seasons. It is definitely an up and coming site and I expect it to become very popular.

The scenery was lovely and it was nice to be 'back to basics' with no signal or wifi. The toilets were clean and more than adequate, and the option to pay for a barbecue was handy as the site does not allow disposables. The site was not too crowded meaning we had space to play ball games. Owners were helpful by offering wellies for a couple of group members who underestimated the amount of sheep poo on the field.

    Disliked:

In terms of facilities and rules, the only dislikes that we had were no bins in the bottom field, and no music allowed (even on phones during the day). We overheard campers near us being told to turn their music off even though we couldn't hear it ourselves. Music at a reasonable volume and time would make the camping experience more enjoyable for paying customers.
The one thing that would prevent us going back to the site was the condesending nature of the owners (particularly Guy) towards our group. There were multiple occasions where he made us feel uncomfortable, which we feel is because of us being a group of young people. There were 16 of us made up of 8 couples, we are all young professionals in our 20s going away for a friend's birthday. We were quiet and followed all camp rules however we feel he looked down on us as if we were a bunch of teenagers looking to cause trouble. We overheard Aly asking other campers their opinions on our group in the toilets (to which the lady replied that we were no problem), this made us feel singled out and uncomfortable, yet even with this confirmation we were still watched over in comparison to other campers.
On the day of check out, guy continuously told us on the morning that we had to be out by 11 and we would 'be all there all day' cleaning. We were all ready in time, the camp was as we found it and we had bought bin bags and took our rubbish to the camp bin, where the owners emptied every bin bag in front of us and guy was making comments on how many empty bottles we had (What you'd expect for for 16 people over 2 nights). We were then told that we would have to take our broken camp chairs home as the camp site cannot dispose of these in their massive bins. Never been to a camp site where you can't put camp related waste in the bin?
As you can see in the previous comments to which Guy has replied, he does not take criticism well, however this review is honest and all of this feedback is meant with the best intentions. If you are going to make "young" groups feel uncomfortable and untrusted it may be better to change your site to a family only camping site rather than advertising otherwise.

The whole "Back to Basics" theme is exactly what we look for when we go camping and this site carries it out perfectly! Excellent balance between access to essentials and feeling like you're on a proper camping trip.
Aly & Guy weren't able to be there when we arrived but left a voicemail and sent texts to ensure we knew where we were going and had a contact number if we had any problems. Aly was quick to greet us both when she saw us the next morning, making sure we'd found everything okay.
Any forgotten essentials can be picked up in Hawes a few miles away and there's also a few pubs and a nice chippy! Loads of gorgeous walks and waterfalls to see (Aysgarth Falls pictured, Hardraw Force is also amazing). Also not too far from Leyburn if you fancy a little drive out.
Sheep in the camping field is a nice little touch (they are moved to another field by night time) and we never found a big issue with sheep poo like some other reviews mentioned. Also nice to see toys for kids to play with kept on the field!
Aly & Guy are the perfect hosts. Each day there is a printed out weather forecast to help plan the day and they are always around looking after the site, talking to campers and happy to help with anything. We have extra reason to thank them after they went out of their way to help us on the day of our departure when we (I) locked the keys in the car when packing up by getting in touch with someone to come and rescue us - saving us a lot of time and money as the nearest locksmith was in Darlington. Note to future campers - keep the keys in your pocket!
We will definitely visit again next time we decide to pitch in Yorkshire!

This is a lovely small campsite. Aly and Guy are very friendly and make sure to have a chat with all guests. We pitched our tent in the bottom field, and had sheep accompanying us in the field for most of our stay, which really added to the countryside feel. For a back to basics campsite the facilities were great: a freezer to freeze ice blocks, hot water, hot showers and toilet paper provided. There is no phone coverage in the area, which really helps you to get away from it all!

What a wonderful campsite! We LOVED the space, the view, the welcome and daily happy conversations with the owners Guy and Ali. Our children loved running around the field with other children and sitting around our campfire in the provided old Tractor Wheel Hubs.
We stayed for 5 nights and each day found something new and beautiful to explore in the area, all within a half hour drive. The area is spectacular.
The amenities are just right for a summer camp - bit of hot water for washing up and quick shower at the end of the day. My son and I liked the double toilet cubicle for a morning chat! We like getting back to basics and forgetting our everyday life for a few days and this site does that in spades.

Local attractions

All is scenic, secluded and unspoilt all around: Stable Fell Campsite is in Raydale, a river valley on the south side of Wensleydale with spectacular scenery and miles' worth of paths for walking and cycling.

Several walks are on the doorstep, like following the route of Raydale's short River Bain, to the village of Bainbridge and its Roman fort, tearoom and a couple of first-rate butchers to pick up meat for the evening campfire.

Or combine birdwatching and buying award-winning preserves with a walk around the circular footpath around the foreshore of Lake Semerwater towards the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's nature reserve to see ducks, oystercatchers, snipe, curlews, lapwings and whooper swans – then pass the village of Stalling Busk to pick up a good haul of goodies from Raydale Preserves.

A short drive to Hawes and the home of the famed Wensleydale Cheese Creamery is also a must – you might see a foodie pattern here – and if you want to go a bit further afield, Stable Fell is a handy base for other Yorkshire attractions like the Aysgarth Falls, Leyburn, Bolton Castle and Richmond.
