General

  • Back to basics stays in the Yorkshire Dales
  • Near Yorkshire's biggest natural lake for fishing and sailing
  • A 15-minute drive from the market town of Hawes

Back to basics stays slap bang in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with weeks' worth of watery sports and other activities on the doorstep – anyone would be happy trotting along to the acclaimed Stable Fell Campsite, among the scenic limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales.

This is the sort of site that experienced guests call a 'find': back to basics but with very clean toilets and hot showers; friendly welcoming owners; quiet; in a wildlife haven with spectacular views; and in the countryside but conveniently sited with a heap of things to do very close by.

Lake Semerwater, Yorkshire's biggest natural lake, is a half a mile's walk from Stable Fell across the fields or a mile and a half by car, and popular with canoeists, sailors, windsurfers and anglers, who come to try their luck at the brimming stocks of bream, brown trout, perch, pike and roach.

Other outdoor options nearby? Try scenic hikes, pony trekking, deer stalking, birdwatching, cycling, mountain biking… Bainbridge, part of the 2014 Tour de France route, is three miles away and the site has easy access to the village of Askrigg and to the market town of Hawes, 15 minutes' drive away.

Stable Fell is open all year and welcomes families, couples, quiet groups and dogs. The pitches are of unlimited size with plenty of space for all – just the ticket for setting up a campfire after a day getting active around the Dales.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Only firewood purchased on the campsite is allowed to be used on the campfires.

No amplified music is allowed at any time on this site.

All tents must be moved to a different pitch after 4 days in order to maintain the lifetime of the grass.

Please note that to prevent boiler damage, the showers will not be operating in cold weather conditions of 2C or below.

Price includes 1 shower per person per day.

This campsite is exactly what it says it is! Basic, but brilliant! Complete peace and escape from everyday life, loads of room for the kids to run around in beautiful surroundings. Ally was brilliant, keeping us up to date with weather warnings and constantly on hand should she be needed. The facilities are immaculate, yes thy are basic, but you are choosing to sleep in a field so I’m not sure what else people would want? We loved it and will definitely be back!

The owners were really friendly and welcoming and always available for little chats. The site was busy as it was the bank holiday weekend but didn’t feel cramped or over crowded. The facilities were described as basic in some reviews but we found them to be great. You are picking a back to basics, no electricity, no WiFi or phone signal, tent only campsite and you could end up with just portable toilets but there are showers, toilets and washing up area in the barn. You can also hire one of their bbq’s and buy firewood for your pitch. Each pitch has a fire pit and it was fantastic walking through the site once it was dark and seeing all the happy families by their camp fires. This campsite is also dog friendly and we took ours for his first ever camping experience. Chief is quite a nervous boy around change and he soon relaxed and enjoyed himself. There were a large number of campers with dogs and I was amazed that there wasn’t the constant barking going on. It really was great. We would most definitely return for another visit and recommend it to others.

I loved the area. The owners of the site were so friendly and very welcoming on arrival; they even gave us constructive feedback on a possible bike ride that we were thinking of. They were very subtle in saying it would be difficult- little did we know!! They saw us on our return cycle and praised us for doing it.
I over heard them discussing how noise needed to be kept to a minimum, of which pleased me no end. Nothing worse than a noisy after hours campsite with children.
The facilities were what it said on the tin, but it was brilliant. Loved being deep in the valley with nature all around.
    Fab, would definitely return.

Local attractions

All is scenic, secluded and unspoilt all around: Stable Fell Campsite is in Raydale, a river valley on the south side of Wensleydale with spectacular scenery and miles' worth of paths for walking and cycling.

Several walks are on the doorstep, like following the route of Raydale's short River Bain to the village of Bainbridge and its Roman fort, tearoom and a couple of first-rate butchers to pick up meat for the evening campfire.

Or combine birdwatching and buying award-winning preserves with a walk around the circular footpath around the foreshore of Lake Semerwater towards the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's nature reserve to see ducks, oystercatchers, snipe, curlews, lapwings and whooper swans – then pass the village of Stalling Busk to pick up a good haul of goodies from Raydale Preserves.

A short drive to Hawes and the home of the famed Wensleydale Cheese Creamery is also a must – you might see a foodie pattern here – and if you want to go a bit further afield, Stable Fell is a handy base for other Yorkshire attractions like the Aysgarth Falls, Leyburn, Bolton Castle and Richmond.
