Classic Romany bow top caravan The view from the caravan

  • North Yorkshire glamping in a restored traditional Romany caravan
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and an hour from the coast
  • Woodburning stove provided, plus kitchen kit for open-fire cooking

She roams no more, but the traditional Romany caravan at Glebe Farm Glamping is still a fab place to bed down for a night or few. It helps, of course, that she’s found a home in a pretty part of North Yorkshire, five minutes’ drive from Kirkby Fleetham, with trees and rural views all around.

Snuggly stays are certainly on the cards here – there’s a woodburning stove to warm things up inside, and you’ll need to cuddle up with your beloved in the small double bed (there’s plenty of space for two, but do bear in mind that classic caravans like this tend towards the cosy rather than the kingsized…)

Morning cuppas can be boiled up in the classic kettle, which is happy either on the stove or on the outdoor fire, and you’ll also be provided with pots and pans for a bit of alfresco cookery over open flames. If you’re not in fire-constructing mood, there’s a country pub five minutes’ drive away that’s won plaudits for its food and serves a fine range of local ales.

Getting to this little rural retreat is a cinch, as it’s just a few minutes’ drive from the A1(M). Don’t bother loading the car up with bedding and towels, as they’re all provided (the latter for use at the shower and toilet a short stroll from the caravan).

And getting out and about is a cinch, too – rambles in the Yorkshire Dales are a 20-minute drive away, and it’ll take you about an hour to get to the coast for a blast of sea air.

We were looking for a weekend getaway for my fiancee's birthday and I was also looking for an easy option to introduce her to camping. This was a perfectly lovely stay. The site is tidy, quiet and there's nobody else there but the owners (it has only got the one pitch). A short drive from the A1. Facilities are amazing, clean tidy and warm, stove and fireplace are great and wood is ready at hand.
The owners are friendly and very welcoming without being obtrusive. A lovely experience all in all.

It is on the pricey side and as such would probably expect the firewood to be supplied rather than having to pay an additional £5 if wanting more than the (abundant) initial supply. Having said that, one does need to limit waste and for some people the only way is to make them pay for stuff....

Local attractions

Seeking somewhere to stretch your legs? Go west to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (20 minutes’ drive), or head east to the North York Moors National Park (half an hour). Both are crammed with paths both gentle and challenging, and historic towns to poke about in. Aim a little further east and you’ll hit the coast within an hour, to stroll along the beach at Saltburn-by-Sea (or ride in its water-powered cliff lift if your legs are giving out…)

Hoping for history-tinged wandering? Head to Fountains Abbey (35 minutes) or venture to Richmond (25 minutes) to visit the castle and peruse the military history displays at Green Howards Museum.

If you’re planning a picnic back at base, it's a wise idea to source some local provisions – head to Hawes (55 minutes) to watch Wensleydale cheese being produced, and to Masham (20 minutes) for a tour of the Black Sheep Brewery before you buy. Sweet treats might come from the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World in Pateley Bridge or the famed Betty’s tea shop in Harrogate (both 45 minutes).
