General

  • Friendly site eight miles from York
  • Surrounded by a network of public footpaths
  • Well-equipped play area with zipwire and giant draughts

'All singing, all dancing' is what the friendly folk at York Meadows Caravan Park eight miles from the grand old centre of York say about their site, and after a quick perusal of the site facilities you'll likely fully agree.

The location here is pretty spesh too, tucked down a private lane near the village of Sheriff Hutton, close to York but also the Yorkshire coast, and surrounded by a network of public footpaths including the Ebor Way, Wold Way and Centenary Way. (If you fancy wandering further, ask the owners for their suggestions, as they're happy hikers of these parts.) Don't want to walk too far? Wander into the friendly village instead for the village shop and to investigate the two village pubs.

However. The York Meadows folk also point out that peeps might not want to leave the park at all... The play area is just grand, with swings, zipwire, a climbing frame and a slide, as well as outdoor table tennis, giant draughts, and snake and ladders; the reception shop sells all you might have forgotten such as bread and milk as well as burgers and bangers: yes, barbecues are allowed here...

Don't fancy cooking? Ring one of the local takeaways and get your dins delivered right to the site, or try a couple of the York Meadows's team's recommendations like the Highwayman Inn in Sheriff Hutton, selling homemade food using fresh local produce, or Thompsons Fish Restaurant and takeaway on Malton Road: anywhere that's won awards for its fish and chips might sound pretty grand to you too.

The facilities were lovely and clean and well maintained

    Disliked:

It's quiet a walk from the electric tent pitches to the toilet especially with a 5yr old. The tent field needs some serious drainage putting in! We had over 24 hours worth of continuous rain one day and the field was water logged think Glastonbury and that's how muddy and boggy it was the next morning! People where arriving looking at the pitches and asking to be moved to outer the edges of the field because it was higher up and out of the water we where on pitches 23,24,25 but most the pitches along the fence were boggy I'd suggest asking for one around the out edges of the field. After the price we paid I'd of expected the field to be well drained considering the great British summers of mixed weather we have. We won't be back again unless they sort the drainage problems out.

Local attractions

Sheriff Hutton is a pretty place to start when considering the countryside around .York Meadows Caravan Park. And then one must go Yorkwards, to the splendid city with York Minster, cobbled streets, scenic old buildings, York Dungeon, York Railway Museum, the Castle Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre. Spend an afternoon/day among the market, shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs of the Shambles, the teeny streets that are among the most snapped shots of York.

Monks Cross Shopping Centre on the outskirts of York sells designer gear for those who want it, and Clifton Moor nearby has more shops, a cinema and a bowling complex as well as restaurants, takeaways and pubs.

Plenty of indoor options are around if the weather decides to be a tad inconsiderate: you could look for a play centre like Wacky Warehouse, Creepy Crawlies, The Farmers Cart and Play Dale Farm, or take the tour at Yorks Chocolate Story; yes, tastings are included... Bigger parks like Flamingo Land and Lightwater Valley are in the area too.

Golf? Greens surrounding the park include Sandburn Hall (with other activities too), York Golf Club, Fulford Golf Club, Easingwold Golf Club and Ampleforth Golf Club. Fishing? Also popular in these parts: cast off locally at Pottery Pond, Birkdale Farm, and Brickyard Farm Lakes.

And of course as it's Yorkshire, there are also piles of abbeys, castles, stately homes, historic houses and museums to visit – without even mentioning the moors or the Yorkshire coast...
