General

  • Popular and peaceful countryside site a short drive from York
  • On the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride
  • Flowers and wine available on request

Seeking serenity in scenic countryside but get antsy if you’re not close to the bright lights? Holds that thought.

City, countryside, a coast to coast cycle route and, er, free-range and curious chickens are all features of very popular and very fab Yapham Holds Farmhouse Campsite, which will see sorted those who ditheringly fancy both urban and rural on one break.

The farm is nicely rooted in rural North Yorkshire countryside that verges on the Yorkshire Wolds, but is a grand and easy drive into also very fab York (even more simples, Park and Ride to York from the bus station near the farm, which has additional services to Beverly and Hull.)

Bring your bike too if poss: Yapham Holds is right on the Way of the Roses 170-mile coast to coast ride from Morecambe to Bridlington and a couple of miles from the six cycle routes weaving around the countryside from the nearby market town of Pocklington.

Yapham Holds is popular for its added little touches as well as its location, like flowers and wine available on request, flowers and handwash in the spotless loo and shower block, and the knowledgeable welcome from hosts Steve and Jan who can advise on all there is to do in the area from museums to York ghost walks.

And the chickens? Get supplies from Pocklington two miles away and fire up the barbecue pitchside or from the decking of a camping pod to see the poultry wobble enthusiastically forth: they seem to be very much sorted in this lovely location too.

Departure time too early.. it's so nice you don't want to leave. Would of preferred 12 or 1pm

From the manager...

Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay with us! Our pods have a departure time of 10.30am. This is to ensure the accommodation has been cleaned/ serviced for that days arrivals. At least you don't have to take down a tent which makes vacating an easier task than if you were in a tent!

The campsite is small and quiet, with clean shower and toilet. The hens running around was lovely, trying to identify each hen from leg tag was fun. The owners could not have been more helpful and friendly. They sell a few essentials on site, when available, such as eggs, bacon, toothpaste and honey. I would recommend this site for anyone who likes peace and quiet.

Perfect campsite for people who want to just experience peace and quiet. The owners are very friendly and helpful, the fish and chips in Stamford Bridge were great thanks. Pocklington just a couple of miles away is a beautiful small town with fantastic shops and places to eat, especially the ice cream parlor. Flamborough head was about an hour away but well worth the visit, we were lucky enough to see the Puffins.
I would not hesitate to recommend this small quiet campsite to anybody who needs to enjoy pleasant countryside without screaming kids or noisy adults who just want to party.

Lovely quiet site on a country lane. Generous pitch sizes and small numbers, so really tranquil. Clean showers and loos, and although as mentioned in other reviews, just the two, we never had any bother getting use of them.

Very friendly owners who gave us some handy information about the local area, and some dog friendly options for places to eat and drink. We bought some eggs from the hens which live on site, which were delicious for breakfast (hope you got the £1 we left on the windowsill!).

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and hope to visit again

Local attractions

Pretty market town Pocklington is well-stocked with pubs, tearooms, restaurants and gift shops as well as supermarkets, but we’re especially impressed to see it also comes with a newly completed skate park for guests travelling with youngsters or who want to revisit their childhood roots/skinned elbows.

More placid but also very impressive pursuits lurk among the lily ponds and lakes of lovely Burnby Hall Gardens just outside Pocklington: the UK’s national collection of hardy water lilies lives here, but we think kids will be more open-mouthed among the giant fish of the gardens’ two lakes which take food directly from the fingers of awestruck guests.

Step into the Stewart Museum afterwards for a look at the collections of former hall owner Major Percy Stewart’s eight grand tours in the early twentieth century – lucky old Major S crossed every continent on his travels and hauled back quite the collection of artefacts, many of which are now on display.

North Yorkshire, York and its surroundings are a top spot for holidaymakers who like historical houses and museums; outside York, award-winning Eden Camp on a former POW camp near Malton tells many tales of World War II, and both Harrogate and Leeds around an hour’s drive away from Yapham Holds and crammed with historical highlights.

In York, hang out with the Vikings at the Jorvik Centre or take a wander around the National Railway Museum or the Yorkshire Air Museum on Halifax Way, the biggest independent air museum in the country. We’re sure we don’t need to mention that’s it’s essential to see York Minster and York Castle Museum too…?

Fifteen miles north, eighteenth century Castle Howard in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a right royal day out by bus from York’s Station Avenue or by train from the main station.

Towards Hull, dive into another topping attraction at award-winning marine centre and aquarium The Deep at Sammy’s Point, where seven species of shark swim among the thousands of sea critters in the aquarium tanks.
