  • Peaceful retreat on a 470-acre working farm
  • Eco pods with ensuite, kitchen and outdoor seating
  • Birdwatching haven: look out for owls, woodpeckers and red kites
Off to Yorkshire to see the sights of old York? To explore many a historic house? Or to canter, hike or bike around its rather special countryside? A stay at Greenwick Farm will sort you out whatever soothes your soul. Here be the reasons why: it's a 470-acre working farm in the rather special Yorkshire Wolds, with very swish eco pods to stay in, both with ensuite, kitchenware and outdoor seating. The farm and its surrounds are also a birdwatching haven, so look out for buzzards and the occasional red kite soaring above the treetops, and woodpeckers, pheasants and partridges in the farm garden and surrounding fields. Do you also think owl spotting is a hoot? Greenwick Farm has its own owl box which has been home to a brood of tawny owls for years. Very friendly Fran and the other site staff are always on hand to share info and tips about the best routes, places to visit, and the best spots to eat and drink in the area – this also includes recommendations of their personal favourites from the menu at the nearby Wolds Inn.

Camping pod

Liked: Lovely pod with the added bonus of its own bathroom including shower, well kept and in a nice quiet location. 10 mins drive from Pocklington where you will find some lovely pubs and shops.

Disliked: Pods could do with a lick of stain as they looks a little tired from the outside

From the manager: Thank you for your comments. It’s on my list of things to do this autumn to sand and stain the outside of the cabins Kind regards

Excellent for chilling and unwinding.

Camping pod

Liked: So peaceful and full of birdlife, including resident barn owls. We have stayed in a lot of pods and this was probably the best and most thoughtfully set up of all of them, with the bathroom being surprisingly spacious. Everything was immaculately clean and well provisioned. The outside set up is great too - a decent porch, a good deck, a nice lawn in front of the pods and a small meadow beyond it for the wildlife. We were lucky enough to be able to arrive early as there was no one in the pod the night before (I texted Fran to ask if 2pm check in was possible instead of the advertised 4pm and was told "any time you what"!), which gave us time to go for a walk in the wonderful local countryside...Tun Dale is stunning, and the walk to get there through the woodland nature reserve is well worth it.

Disliked: Nothing at all.

Liked: Lovely find. We stayed in the pod which was more spacious than expected, very comfy and well equipped. You only need to bring food and clothes. Good location to explore the area with lots of walks close by. Highly recommend and is in our return list.

Local attractions

The UK is of course rather spectacular when it comes to historic houses, and Yorkshire's pretty good on that front too. The area around Greenwick Farm has quite a few old homes dotted about its landscape, like Castle Howard, probably the most well known in the region (21 miles), and Sledmere House (eight miles), Breezy Knees at Warthill (12 miles), Burton Agnes Hall, the walled gardens at Scampston (both 18 miles) and the castle and walled garden of Helmsley (31 miles). Also make time for a trip to award-winning Burnby Hall Gardens in Pocklington six miles away, which has the National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies, the Stewart Museum (go, it's great) and regular events throughout the year like open air theatre and brass band concerts. York has a plethora of places of interest, be it gothic cathedrals, spectacular city walls, drifting river cruises and a good handful of museums like the National Railway Museum, Jorvik Viking Centre and the Yorkshire Air Museum.
