General

  • Family-run site a few miles from York
  • Full of local hikes and undisturbed byways
  • Restaurant on site in a heated Lapland tent

The Canadian Air Force crew who stayed at Yorkshire's Wombleton Airfield in WWII mightn't have had the luxury of safari tents to stay in, but we reckon airmen of all ilks would have found the accommodation at highly shipshape.

Named after the airfield's nickname, nearby is a family-run company in the heart of Yorkshire's Ryedale, run by folk who want to share their extensive knowledge of this excellent area with other curious and like-minded peeps who come to explore it. It's in a pretty good location too, just a few miles south of York and a quick drive from the North York Moors National Park.

A favourite of guests is the Gi Sukawaka Restaurant in the site's heated Lapland tent, serving breakfasts and evening meals (eg, pie night for a fiver) as well as pot suppers and breakfasts to be heated up and had in one's tent. Picnic hampers stocked with local produce are available to take away.

There's also the Cedar Lodge, the main building, which has a shop selling homemade jams, chutneys, homemade cakes and quite a bit more; the lodge also houses extra showers, loos, a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Dogs are very welcome at and lots of walks are nearby; please just keep your pooch on a lead while on site.

There are showers on site a short distance from the safari tents.

Toilets could have been cleaned more frequently & toiletries filled but it was A bank holiday and the site was busy.

location, camp field, facilities, staff - were all great!

    Disliked:

tents were allowed to pitch only a couple of feet away from me either side which felt quite claustrophobic and was a worry when they were using gas cookers so close. I appreciate that bank hols are expected to be busier but I think campers should be asked to leave a lot more room between each other. WiFi didn't work for me I think it must have a short range, might be a problem for some.

Very large pitch and even though it was busy the facilities were clean and well stocked. The owner was cleaning the toilets at 4.30am to ensure the facilities were clean for the morning. The location was great and we visited a number of places all very close by. There was a lot of space for my 2 young boys to run off their energy.

Toilets and showers were clean, warm (bonus) and Up to date.
The food in the restaurant was nice. Added bonus that they can fetch it to your tent.

    Disliked:

I didn’t find the owner very helpful when enquiring about the local area and places to go. I could understand if she was busy but she wasn’t. I did find her quite rude.
The grass was long. And had had horses on there. Cars were getting stuck in the field because it was so boggy (owner had to get the tractor out for one person) but she still didn’t tell people not to drive onto it.
    All other staff were friendly.

From the manager...

thank you for your feed back

you asked me where there was a pub to go to with your dog ? i said you can go to our local pub just a short walk into the village they allow dogs in the pub !
the grass is long as unfortunately it is to wet to be able to cut .
1 car got stuck in the field as unfortunately they did not understand when i asked them to avoid the area where they got stuck in and to use the second entrance on to the site
fortunately no one else got stuck in this area as they were informed not to go that way !

thanks jenny

Wide open spaces, not crammed in around other groups, toilet and shower facilities very well maintained

    Disliked:

Loud dogs and geese owned by the campsite landlord during the middle of the night, bin area not cleaned so a stupid amount of flies next to campsite

From the manager...

sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay !

loud dogs belong to the kennels about half a mile away
the geese belong to the neighbouring farm
and the bins are regularly emptied and are clean there are flies as they are part and parcel of the country side !
thanks jenny

Local attractions

As we say, this is walking land, so take the dog, a picnic or both and go off to explore Ryedale and is surrounding countryside: the area surrounding is full of local hikes and undisturbed byways.

The North York Moors National Park is a little further in the same direction, while Nunnington Hall and Castle Howard are a short drive to the south east.
