General

  • Family-run site a few miles from York
  • Full of local hikes and undisturbed byways
  • Restaurant on site in a heated Lapland tent

The Canadian Air Force crew who stayed at Yorkshire's Wombleton Airfield in WWII mightn't have had the luxury of safari tents to stay in, but we reckon airmen of all ilks would have found the accommodation at highly shipshape.

Named after the airfield's nickname, nearby is a family-run company in the heart of Yorkshire's Ryedale, run by folk who want to share their extensive knowledge of this excellent area with other curious and like-minded peeps who come to explore it. It's in a pretty good location too, just a few miles south of York and a quick drive from the North York Moors National Park.

A favourite of guests is the Gi Sukawaka Restaurant in the site's heated Lapland tent, serving breakfasts and evening meals (eg, pie night for a fiver) as well as pot suppers and breakfasts to be heated up and had in one's tent. Picnic hampers stocked with local produce are available to take away.

There's also the Cedar Lodge, the main building, which has a shop selling homemade jams, chutneys, homemade cakes and quite a bit more; the lodge also houses extra showers, loos, a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

Dogs are very welcome at and lots of walks are nearby; please just keep your pooch on a lead while on site.

There are showers on site a short distance from the safari tents.

Nice clean showers. 20/08/2017

    Nice clean showers.

    Disliked:

Only disabled tiolet was located within the ladies block, and to get to the men's toilets was up 3 stairs. Cubicles in the men's toilets had no locks. Staff seemed unfriendly and to busy to welcome us, only showing us where the electric hookup pitch was and to point to the tiolet.
One pitch we was asked not to use as to allow grass to recover which was fine and understandable the Only available pitch was near the children's play area. To start with this was fine. Until our second day when children turned up with leather footballs and rather than play in the empty field decided to kick the ball around the children's play area, this results in tents and vechiles being repeatedly hit. Firstly spoke to the children and asked if he could be careful after this a water balloon was thrown at my 5 year old who was playing on the slides. I then spoke to the parents. This resulted in no change in fact they seemed to aim more for our tent and vechiles. We never saw anyone from management to speak to them. We decided after just 2 nights out of 5 to leave the site and move Somewhere else.

Nice location, quiet, which helps when you have a tent!
    Unusual teepee style restaurant:)

    Disliked:

Not enough toilets, people were queuing up
Only one sink for shaving, washing etc! which is silly as there were over 20 tents there, so 40+ people, sometimes more
So basically they need more toilet and shower facilities, really not big enough for the site.

Very nice clean site. Lovely food at the restaurant.

    Disliked:

Not very good wash facilities. Small sinks in the ladies toilets. And only one small sink in the men's. There is only one sink in the shower room with no electricity sockets. There is two plug sockets outside in the view of everyone. I had to blow dry my hair after my shower outside with the whole site watching. One day it didn't stop raining and I couldn't dry my hair as the plug was outside. Had to stay wet and cold

  • Liked:

The amount of space to pitch the tent, not too overcrowded. The cleanliness of the whole site. The toilet and shower areas lit on the outside at night.

    Disliked:

No sockets to use a hairdryer made staying on a non electric pitch a bit awkward.
