- Small and friendly site within walking distance of Yarm
- Easy access to Tees river walks and whitewater rafting at Tees Barrage
- Full English breakfasts or sandwiches available to buy
Hills and dales, rivers and lakes and a castle with a difference… there aren't many of north-east England’s top attractions you can’t reach in a short drive from Field View Campsite, just outside the village of Yarm in the county of Cleveland.
This is a friendly and family-run site, with pubs, shops, supermarkets and Yarm Castle five minutes’ drive or a pleasant stroll away along the banks of the Tees: this is a teeny model castle built by a local craftsman in 1880, with tiny stained glass windows and interior lighting. If you want to nose around bigger historic buildings, it’s a 10-minute drive from the site to Preston Park, a Georgian mansion surrounded by parkland and river walks, with a replica Victorian street, museum collection, adventure playground and skate park.
There’s a playground on site, along with a basic unheated shower/toilet block; dogs are welcome too. Even more pleasantly, for a fee the team will deliver a full English breakfast to your doorstep in the mornings, as well as freshly-made sandwiches: just remember to check times and order in advance.

There's all kinds to get up to round here for adventurous sorts, from canoeing, kayaking and whitewater rafting at Tees Barrage or motorbiking and rally driving at Croft circuit, both about 20 minutes’ drive away, to flitting through the treetops on zipwires and ropes at Dalby Forest Park, an hour and 20 minutes from the site.
Walkers can spend a day or two in the North York Moors National Park, walking round and fishing upon Cod Beck Reservoir (20 minutes), then heading up to Kildale (half an hour) to join the Cleveland Way hiking route to the coast. More peacefully, take the Esk Valley Railway to do the fab scenic route while seated.
If you prefer your train rides with a dash of heritage, the North York Moors Railway gives you the whole moors, hills coastline combo from Goathland down to Whitby (both an hour away) with toots and whistles and steam power. There’s more time travel to be found in the seaside town of Whitby itself, from Dracula tours to the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and the spooky ruins of the Abbey along with boat cruises and seal spotting.
Having done the moors, head west to the Yorkshire Dales National Park: it’s a 50-minute drive to Bolton Castle and the cracking countryside around it, and an hour to Aysgarth Falls, a magnet not just for waterfall watchers but also folk seeking hiking and biking activities.
