General

  • Spectacular views above Robin Hood's Bay
  • Coastline a short walk away through the farm
  • Four miles from Whitby for boat trips and golden sands

Ever been to Robin Hood's Bay? To fish, fossil hunt, birdwatch or potter among its comely cobbled streets? If not, steal some time from work for a North Yorkshire coastline holiday, based above the bay on a farm park with stellar sea views and scenic countryside surrounds.

Bay Ness Farm is about 25 minutes' walk from Robin Hood's Bay, across the farm and via an old railway track to the coastline: spectacular views along the way, including of boats in the bay and ships out to sea, come as standard.

From the bay, hikers can join the long-distance trail the Cleveland Way on its 110-mile run from Helmsley to the Brigg at Filey, or just mosey around the town's shops, pubs and tearooms among the old streets. Whitby is about four miles to Robin Hood Bay's south.

Barbecues are allowed at Bay Ness Farm (land your own fish at Robin Hood's Bay three-mile expanse) and ice pack freezing is available to keep your catch fresh.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

On leaving the site there is no need to check out, but please don't park in the bottom yard unless you are leaving someone with the vehicle as the site owners may need access to the barns.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted.

Stayed here in mid April and was blessed with great weather in the best campsite in Robin hoods bay. Approx 5 min drive from the town and 10/15 mins to Whitby by car and around 1 mile walk from robin hoods bay.
Very relaxed and approachable owners who vow to not overbook so always a chilled experience. Hook ups for camper vans but otherwise basic, which I mean in as a positive thing. More than adequate toilets and wet rooms with outdoor pot washing area and recycling area.
Near national trust coastal walks and national cycle route 1(partially on the old railway cinder track). Visiting area for a beach clean up with the msc and was just the break I needed. Very much hope to book again soon.

    Disliked:

Maybe too remote for some but for the campers wanting great views and tranquility it's a must if in the area.
Route up to site by car is no a road as expected but I got up there in a 1.0l Toyota Yaris with ease.

From the manager...

Hi
this does relate to this review
please dont arrive early in this case 11am (one of three people that day) its rude and we are not ready for you

you can see the time of arrival before you book while you book and with your confirmation and there is a four foot sign saying no arrivals before 1pm on the lane before you even get to the end of our track

there is no parking once you leave the main road as our vehicles and those of the farm above may be returning to site and need to park in the bays in the yard you will be blocking

top tip is your satnav willl tell you what time you are going to arrive and if you are leaving whitby before 12.50 you are going to be early

on the plus side if you must arrive before 1pm as there appears to be some demand we have now introduced a system to allow you to book and pay for it (£25 to cover the costs of doing this) and give us an accurate arrival time (non hookup bookings) through pitchup so we can manage this

    Clean showers/toilets despite the weather

    Disliked:

Sorry but my review is based on my experience on the days we were there. The weather was terrible and had been for days before. The ground was absolutely water logged and muddy. We didn’t attempt to get in our pitch and had to park on the slopping service road. The showers, although clean, were freezing cold with no heating although there was plenty of hot water. The road is terrible from the main road all the way to the site (maybe a mile) there was a JCB in the middle of the field. I would think the views would be nice it it hadn’t been thick fog. I had emailed a couple of days before asking about the ground conditions, but got no reply. Also £4 a night for our small dog that sank up to her belly in the mud when she got out of the van seemed expensive. No dog walking area, water bowl etc for that £8 we spent.

From the manager...

Hi

Directions

The farm is located off the B1447, which can be approached from the A171 Scarborough to Whitby road.

Please be aware that some satnavs take customers to Greenhills, which is the farm to the south of us on the map. Please follow the directions below to ensure you get to Bay Ness Farm!

Satnavs should be set to YO22, High Lane, but they are not very accurate for the last mile.

If you are coming from Pickering on the A169 Moors Road do not follow the signs to Little Beck (unless you like an exciting life!) but continue into Whitby.

Leave Whitby heading towards Scarborough until you reach the village of Hawsker (around 1.5 miles) and turn left on to the B1447 (signposted to Robin Hood's Bay).

From the B1447 (approximately 2 miles from Hawsker village) and just before the church, you will pass 4 terraced cottages. High Lane is the lane of the left, immediately past these cottages. You should turn left and proceed along High Lane, until some farm buildings are reached. Continue following the track as it bears to the left (DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR SATNAV AND TURN RIGHT DOWN THE HILL PAST THE HOUSE, AS THIS ROAD IS NARROW.)

Eventually this track becomes a concrete sleeper corrugated track, continue to follow this track as it leads you down to Bay Ness Farm.

Please stop before entering the second yard, which has a big stone at its entrance, as space to turn round is limited and it is an uphill reverse to leave the yard.

Please attend reception which is located at the end of the second concrete yard (past the big stone) on the right on your arrival and book on for your visit. Reception is located on the right of the main courtyard. Please don't park within 10 metres of the fire points as it blocks the access roads for other users.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

To the bay and casting off first: anglers rate the fishing from Robin Hood's Bay's sea wall and its hundreds of marks to be among the most scenic in North Yorkshire: fish here day and night for whoppers of up to 20lb.

As well as picking up a section of Cleveland Way, the bay is also the end point for the 192-mile Coast to Coast Walk, so walkers might care to direct themselves towards its starting point in Cumbria with a 19-mile hike to Glaisdale, passing Falling Foss waterfall and Sleights Moor.

Feeling faint at the thought? Have an easier ramble from Robin Hood's Bay to Boggle Hole or Maw Wyke.

Elsewhere, arm yourself with tourist info from reception to see what's what in the surrounding area and North Yorkshire coast, like the gothic vibe, boat trips, golden sands and lots of leisure and pub opps at Whitby (a lot more sea fishing is available from here too).

From Whitby, drive, cycle or take the Coastliner bus to other top spots on the edge of North Yorkshire, like dipping your toes in the sea at Scarborough, the county's seaside capital, or seeing the birds at Bridlington and Bempton Cliffs.

Inland, Bay Ness Farm is in the North York Moors National Park, for a spot of steam train riding, adventure sports, or yet more walking among its wide open heather moorland, bluebell woods and tiny villages.

Must see

  • Whitby Abbey (4.5 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (13.1 miles)
  • The Moors National Park Centre (14.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Yorkshire Coast (3.3 miles)
  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (10.7 miles)
