General

  • In North Yorkshire countryside on the outskirts of Slingsby
  • Clean and up to date amenities
  • Licensed shop, play area and launderette

Set in North Yorkshire countryside on the outskirts of the village of Slingsby, Robin Hood Caravan and Camping Park is a pretty, family-run site with a good range of amenities. It's six miles east of Malton and close to the North York Moors.

The well-kept park includes a treasure trail for your little treasures (around the park and into the local village) and a play area with swingers, climbing frame, bouncers and slide, all on safe surfacing. There's also a licensed shop, a launderette and a clean and cosy toilet and shower block with hairdryers and shaving points.

Local village Slingsby is within walking distance and has a country pub serving home-cooked meals, a village shop for sandwiches, sausage rolls and quiches, and a bakery with homemade cakes.

Would have been OK on a fine day... good for children

    Disliked:

We asked for a two night stay instead of the one we already booked. We asked for hard standing because of the wet weather, but there weren't any (available?). That was NOT a problem, we were told.

We did have a problem though. We almost got stuck, when settling in, and with more rain coming, we didn't dare stay the second night.

As for wifi: we spend 5£ on WIFI, but it didn't work. Probably the weather, but still a waste of money.

A funny layout: The reception is at the end, and also the baths. If you stay on the upper fields (as most do - the static caravans are downhill) it is a long way to walk for a bath and for emptying etc.

From the manager...

Many thanks for taking the time to review the park. Unfortunately all our hardstanding pitches are fully booked until the end of the season as I'm sure you will have seen when visiting the park.

Sadly, of the 6 pitches that were offered to you, you did chose the pitch that crossed the largest expanse of grass and two of them were very close to the tarmac roads. It is unfortunate that you "almost got stuck" but having managed the park for the last 18 years, I can count on one hand the number of motorhomes that have actually needed help moving away from their pitch. As an old sand quarry, we are lucky to have very quick draining ground even in the torrential rain that you experienced during your stay with us.

Just to clarify for other guests and to avoid confusion - there are no baths on the park.

Great campsite for our first taster camping experience with a little one. The staff were friendly and the site had everything you would need.

We're from York and selected this site out of all the ones around for it's facilities and reviews and were not disappointed.

    Disliked:

The sheep next door were quite vocal :-/

From the manager...

Many thanks for taking the time to review the park. I'm pleased to hear that you had such a good time with us. I've had a quiet word with the neighbours and they have assured me that they'll keep their baa-ing to a minimum in future :-)

As for the sheep, I'm afraid that if you choose to stay at a park in a rural location you are likely to hear animals in fields and owls in the trees as they are very much a part of country life.

Directions

Robin Hood Caravan Park is situated on the B1257, Malton to Helmsley Road, in the village of Slingsby.

Important notice for SatNav users:

We are aware that when using a satellite navigation system drivers are taken to the wrong entrance to the park.

Please be aware that guests should use the main entrance on the B1257 and not the entrance on Green Dyke Lane.

We would ask that you re-route the final part of your journey to ensure that you use the correct entrance and avoid using your satellite navigation system when finding the park.

From the north (Whitby): take the A169 road to Malton via Pickering then join the B1257 to Helmsley. After 6 miles you will come to Slingsby and we have direct access on the right hand side.

From the north (Thirsk): take the A170 road towards Helmsley. Then take a right turn onto the B1257 towards Slingsby and Malton. Follow this road for 6 miles until you reach Slingsby. Robin Hood Caravan Park is the third turning on the left.

From south/west: take the M1, A1, A64 via York to Barton Hill. Turn left following signs to Slingsby via Castle Howard. At the crossroads in Slingsby turn right and Robin Hood Caravan Park is on the left.

From east: take the A64 to Malton. At the traffic lights in Malton turn right and follow the B1257 towards Helmsley. After 6 miles you will come to Slingsby and Robin Hood Caravan Park is on the right.

Local attractions

This is an ideal base from which to explore the lush landscapes of Yorkshire, from the Wolds to the Moors. It’s also easy to get to the Yorkshire coastline and the resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Whitby, all with lots to see and do.

For ramblers and cyclists, the Cleveland Way and Wolds Way both pass nearby, and there's diverse territory to explore, from wild moorland to dense forest, with plenty of lovely villages (and excellent pubs) in between.

Harry Potter fans and locomotive lovers alike will enjoy a trip aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which chuffs its way across 18 miles of scenery and includes a stop at Goathland, the terminus for the Hogwarts Express.

Fifteen miles away is the ancient city of York, where visitors can yomp around the city walls, be humbled by the majesty of the Minster, or take in one of the myriad museums and attractions.

The National Railway Museum and Castle Museum are both highly recommended, and bloodthirsty bairns will enjoy York Dungeons and the growling Vikings in the reconstructions at the brilliant Jorvik Viking Centre. The streets are jam-packed with tearooms, restaurants, bars and interesting independent shops: try Stonegate, Swinegate and the medieval Shambles for the best of the shopping.

Castle Howard is very close by: take in the eighteenth century architecture and interiors, roam around the gardens, woods and lakes, and keep the kids amused with a boat trip or a romp around the adventure playground. The packed events programme includes regular arts, crafts and produce markets, concerts and themed weekends.

Also nearby are the Eden Camp World War II museum, Flamingoland adventure park and zoo, Dalby Forest and the treetop adventures of Go Ape.
