  • Peaceful and family-run site next to the Forest of Bowland
  • In a walkers' paradise near the Yorkshire Three Peaks
  • A variety of pre-ordered homemade pizzas on Saturday evenings
These routes are made for walking… Orcaber Caravan and Camping Site is in the Three Peaks area of the Yorkshire Dales National Park for hikes up Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent, and right next to the wanders and strides of the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many more walks and footpaths start directly from the site; get a map from the site information office to show you on your way. Based at the village of Austwick and five miles from the market town of Settle on the edge of the national park, Orcaber is a peaceful and family-run site, set among outstanding scenery with horses and sheep grazing in the neighbouring fields. Dogs are welcome (on leads on site at all times please) and a big field with stream is allocated as a dog walk area on site. Pitches at Orcaber are large, flat and well drained. Facilities include separate ladies' and gents' showers with plenty of hot water; toilets; a freezer with coolbox ice packs, and an info room with details of local attractions, events – and those many local walks. A variety of pre-ordered homemade pizzas are available on Saturday evenings.

Camping pod

Liked: Brilliant site. Toilets and showers spotless. Little shop for anything you forgot. We stayed in a pod, it has heater and lighting, picnic bench outside which came in handy. Staff very welcoming. Fire pits and wood delivered to our pod. Great dog walking field where you can let your dog off the lead. Will definately go back. Plenty space for kids to run around. There's also a dog shower

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: What a gem. Intended to stay for one night only as I was touring around, ended up staying three nights. Superb site, facilities and staff, very friendly and accommodating. Excellent location for the peaks and beyond, I still have more hills to climb so will definitely return. Many thanks for the hospitality.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Orcaber is one of our go to sites. We have been pitching up for the last 4 years and have stayed in tents and now our caravan. The site is always clean. The facilities are extremely well kept. The site seems to be making improvements each year for example the shop, extra washing stations and weekend takeaways. The staff and friendly and approachable. The site is child and pet friendly and feels safe. The tent and caravan pitches have adequate space and the caravan pitches have own water connections which is an added bonus. The site has beautiful views and is only a short drive away from a number of areas of natural beauty.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Disliked: On pitch up I was allowed to book a motorhome grass pitch without ehu which suited us as we are self contained. Arrived to be told that they had been cancelling bookings because the ground was waterlogged. We had not been contacted however. After some thought they showed us to a part of the field they thought 'might be alright '. Immediately after driving on we realised we were stuck and could not even used our levelling ramps. After 15 minutes the owner came and towed us off. I suggested that we stay in the carpark overnight and that the next morning could leave as all the hardstanding pitches were full. I said we would accept a refund of 2 of the 3 nights booked; I was happy to pay for one night in their carpark! The owner was not happy for us to do this. He was quite abrupt and said ' you booked a grass tent pitch '. I didn't book a tent. I booked a Motorhome grass pitch; I assumed that as I had been able to book it that it would be ok. And that if that wasn't the case, that my booking would be cancelled in advance and refunded. In the end another member of staff allowed us to park on a seasonal pitch that contained a small caravan. He said he ' didn't think the owners would turn up but if they did we would have to leave '. Consequently we felt like squatters and everytime we heard a car we thought it was the pitch owners! We left a day early in the end. £100 to sublet a seasonal pitch for 2 nights is not my idea of good value.

Local attractions

The Three Peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent in close range are a topping location for walkers – if you're here to hike, see if you can complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to tackle the 24 miles around all three in one day. Orcaber Caravan Camping Site is also near the famed Ingleton Waterfalls Trail for woodland-based walks among spectacular northern scenery, and within easy driving distance of the waterfalls, stalactites and tours of the spectacular White Scar Caves, the longest show cave in the UK. Also recommended by the Orcaber team are the Settle to Carlisle railway line, through 73 miles of spectacular countryside through the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines, and passing splendid Ribblehead viaduct. The limestone formation of Malham Cove, a famed Yorkshire Dales beauty spot, is also a popular local spot. Yet more walks, hikes and heaps more spectacular scenery are at the Lake District National Park, about an hour's drive away.
