General

  • Estate park on the banks of the Ribble two miles from Settle
  • Modern facilities
  • Fishing available on site

Gallop forth to Knight Stainforth Caravan & Camping Park if you require a River Ribble base in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a mere couple of miles from town and on the roomy estate of a manor house which belonged to the Knights Templar... knice.

Said estate is the 45 acres of Knight Stainforth Hall, dating back to pre-Norman times and a nifty base for digging into the dales, the Lake District and the land of All Creatures Great and Small's James Herriot. It's been run by the Maudsley family since 1927 and these days has a modern loo and shower block with free hot showers, a laundry and facilities for dishwashing.

Junior knights (knightettes?) have a ball games area and a playground to charge around, and there's also wireless internet, battery charging and cool block freezing available, a shop with an off-license selling basic supplies, camping accessories and gas refills. Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit in reception.

Lovely clean site. Restaurant was lovely and allowed dogs inside. Kids loved the playground and games room. Showers and toilets were clean. There's a great walk off campsite down the river to an impressive water fall. There's a pub about 10 mins walk away.

Stunning views 28/10/2016

The site was, quite simply, in a stunning location. An away from it all, it was great to be able to escape the use of the internet! (This describes the level of wifi!) which is great. The site was clean, some pitches on a gentle slope, but not horrendous. We had a hard standing pitch which was very large & had its own water supply so no trudging across fields to fill containers. Checking in was efficient, with clear directions to the pitch & operating the security gates (these operate on a key fob). Great level of facilities, plenty of toilets, private was basins & 4 showers for men & women. The cafe/bar is a lovely extra if you don't feel like cooking your own meals & the prices are very reasonable.
The site itself stands in such a picturesque spot, the river with the waterfall is a 2 minute walk away & is very popular for people looking for the salmon leaping. The walks are well signposted from this point, follow the acorn signs, these will lead you into the dales, Catrigg Foss is a must visit, tucked out of the way but lovely. You can walk to Settle this way, which is around 7 miles or you can walk along the river bank (about 3 miles)
    Will definitely visit again.

    Disliked:

Nothing really, however from a personal point of view, I feel that the showers could have been positioned in the main toilet area as this is where the hairdryer is, also when there are parents trying to shower more than one child, the shower area is a a little small, but this is my own niggle & it would not stop me from returning.

Superb location and helpful staff. We were lucky to visit on a crisp and clear early Autumn week and the sheltered location with all round views of rolling hills and scarp slopes leading down to the River Ribble were a delight. A particular highlight was that we were there when the salmon were running up the Ribble and over the Stainforth Force waterfalls that are located just 100 metres from the site.

Settle is a 45 minute walk with a variety of paths and roads and is a traditional Yorkshire town famous of course for it's well restored Railway Station and is well served by shops and cafe's. It's starting to get a little twee and I can imagine it's particularly touristy in high summer but as tourists ourselves we can hardly complain.

New shower block, spotlessly clean and warm. Generous pitch size. Great to have the Knights Table cafe/bar/restaurant on site, good choice of great food at a reasonable price.

    Disliked:

Pitches a bit uneven, our caravan took quite some levelling. Only other quibble was the press button showers......I know they're designed to save water but annoying to use!

Directions

Make your way to Settle via the A65.

From the north: leave the A65 at the first junction signposted for Settle. Immediately on entering Giggleswick, see the sign for Knight Stainforth on the right hand side of the road. Turn left into Stackhouse Lane and follow the road for 2 miles to the site.

From the south: leave the A65 at the first roundabout signposted for Settle. Continue through Settle, ignoring the turn-off to the right signed Stainforth & Horton. Approximately 250 yards after the bridge take the next right into Stackhouse Lane, signposted for Knight Stainforth. The site is 2 miles along this road.

Important: If you use Google Maps, Route Planners or Sat Navs to help you plan your route please be sure to follow the detailed written directions above, once you leave the A65, to avoid narrow roads (Dog Hill Brow) which are unsuitable for caravans and large vehicles.

Local attractions

Once you've settled a few days strolling, cycling or cantering in the countryside surrounding Knight Stainworth Caravan & Camping Park (the Pennine Way is close by too if you want to walk 267 miles or so), take a few day trips to find out what else is around: caving, waterfalls, the Lake District and market towns are all easily accessible. Prefer something easier? The superb Settle to Carlisle railway can be picked up a couple of miles away.

Cavernous caves and climbing are both for the taking in the area to dig into: White Scar Cave, the longest show cave in England, is nearby at Ingleton and Ingleborough Cave is a little to the east. Tours are available at both.

From Malhamdale, clamber the three famous landmarks, Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar, or walk around all three in the eight-mile clockwise walk from Malham. (More climbing? The Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside await.)

Another well-trodden trek in the region is the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, starting and ending at Ingleton on a four-mile rocky road along the River Twiss and past the Pecca, Thornton Force, Beezley Falls, Rival Falls and Snow Falls waterfalls.

Or take things a bit easier and wander around the local market towns of Settle, Skipton and Hawes to pick up local produce to have back at base.
