  • Estate park on the banks of the Ribble two miles from Settle
  • Modern facilities
  • Fishing available on site
Gallop forth to Knight Stainforth Caravan & Camping Park if you require a River Ribble base in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a mere couple of miles from town and on the roomy estate of a manor house which belonged to the Knights Templar... knice. Said estate is the 45 acres of Knight Stainforth Hall, dating back to pre-Norman times and a nifty base for digging into the dales, the Lake District and the land of All Creatures Great and Small's James Herriot. It's been run by the Maudsley family since 1927 and these days has a modern loo and shower block with free hot showers, a laundry and facilities for dishwashing. Junior knights (knightettes?) have a ball games area and a playground to charge around, and there's also wireless internet, battery charging and cool block freezing available, a shop with an off-license selling basic supplies, camping accessories and gas refills. Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit in reception.

Local attractions

Once you've settled a few days strolling, cycling or cantering in the countryside surrounding Knight Stainworth Caravan & Camping Park (the Pennine Way is close by too if you want to walk 267 miles or so), take a few day trips to find out what else is around: caving, waterfalls, the Lake District and market towns are all easily accessible. Prefer something easier? The superb Settle to Carlisle railway can be picked up a couple of miles away. Cavernous caves and climbing are both for the taking in the area to dig into: White Scar Cave, the longest show cave in England, is nearby at Ingleton and Ingleborough Cave is a little to the east. Tours are available at both. From Malhamdale, clamber the three famous landmarks, Malham Cove, Malham Tarn and Gordale Scar, or walk around all three in the eight-mile clockwise walk from Malham. (More climbing? The Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside await.) Another well-trodden trek in the region is the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, starting and ending at Ingleton on a four-mile rocky road along the River Twiss and past the Pecca, Thornton Force, Beezley Falls, Rival Falls and Snow Falls waterfalls. Or take things a bit easier and wander around the local market towns of Settle, Skipton and Hawes to pick up local produce to have back at base.
