General

  • Landscaped site with trees, shrubs and flowers
  • Immaculately-maintained heated showers and loos
  • Licensed shop, launderette, caravan spares and gas cylinders for sale

The Pickering people have it sorted. The Vale of Pickering Caravan Park is crammed with trees, shrubs and flowerbeds, has views over the North Yorkshire countryside, and washrooms you would want to find anywhere.

The heated loos and showers are immaculate, there are private wash cubicles, an electric point for those all-important hairdryers and hair straighteners, and even a ladies’ make-up area. Best of all, there are ladies’ and gents’ baths – providing a long hot soak after a long hard day relaxing and sightseeing.

There are first-class facilities on site too, including a well-stocked licensed shop, a launderette, caravan spares and gas cylinders, a play area and a football pitch for the kids.

For food, there is a pub around 2.5 miles away, and the clever people at Pickering also have a visiting fish and chip van once or twice a week, or you can pick up some fresh local produce at the nearby farmers’ market. Thornton Dale (four miles away) also has two traditional pubs so you won't be short of choice when it comes to satisfying all tastes and tums.

At the risk of repeating other reviews, there is simply nothing to dislike about this site. I asked to be near the shower block as I can't walk far and that is what I got. We were late arriving but still received a visit from the owner as we struggled to erect our tent in the half light.
The grounds are immaculate and the facilities for children's play look fantastic. The shower block is incredibly clean and I love having a wet room with loo and sink in one unit. Free to use hairdryers, too!
I strongly recommend this site and will certainly be back for a longer stay as soon as I can.

i stayed for 4 nights, needed to be near the toilet block due to my disability, this was no problem, a pitch was already allocated, this site is well lit, beautiful clean showers and toilet blocks, they have a bath if you want to use it, it will cost you £1 or £"2, for how much hot water you require,i was pleasently suprised at the shop prices, they were very cheap compared to some of the sites ive stayed on, they have a lot of information, about where to go what to eat, a fish n chip van calls on site ,so if you dont want to cook those nights ,you dont have to, the pitches are hard standing and a very nice size, ould i go back????? as soon as i can.

Fantastic facilities which were exceptionally clean at all times. The tent pitch site was flat and very easily accessible by car. There were many caravans neatly arranged in berth areas which fronted onto the tent pitch area so one felt part of a community but at the same time away from it all...The best of both worlds. The site was ideally situated as a base to explore many places of interest nearby within a 25 minute drive, but also a beautiful area to just walk for rest and relaxation.

Local attractions

Trainspotters and sightseers alike will be chuff-chuffed at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to take visitors on a steam-rollering 18 miles through the moors, with rural villages along the route - Goathlands was used as Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film and as Aidensfield in ITV’s Heartbeat - and with plenty of opportunities to hop off and go hiking o’er the moors.

The North York National Park has walking and cycling routes galore, with other sporty options near the Vale of Pickering taking in tennis, golf, horse-riding, sailing, mountain biking, fishing and watersports at Wykeham Lakes, or cantering at Snainton Riding Centre.

Savvy shoppers should sally to the nearby market towns of Pickering and Malton, or head towards York to spend the day at the Monks Cross Shopping Centre two miles from the city centre. And once the wallet is somewhat lighter, other recommended and less expensive days out in the area include taking in the World War II museum at Eden Camp, seeing the historic buildings at the Ryedale Folk Museum, or going to one of the many events at the Baroque mansion Castle Howard.

A visit to this neck of the woods wouldn’t be complete without a day at the seaside – visitors can stroll on the sands at fantastic Whitby, flit around Filey, browse through Bridlington or spend days at the country’s first ever seaside resort of Scarborough with its Italian gardens, miniature steam railway, casino, clifftop castle and kid-clamouring for seaside amusements.

Kids will also love the nearby theme park and zoo Flamingo Land, making like a monkey on the zip wires at Go Ape! or getting grisly at the York Dungeons after the big folk take in the architecture of York Minster and the history of the Jorvik Centre.
