  • On a small farm with no passing traffic
  • Walking and biking routes very close by
  • A few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway
Would you like to pitch up among Pickering peace? Farm the folks (and dog) out to Haugh Rigg Farm four miles from town, set in a peaceful and quiet spot at the end of a small track with no passing traffic – you'll probably already know that splendid North Yorkshire scenery is all around too. Haugh Rigg is a non-working farm that sees peeps escape to it for a peaceful retreat, as it has walking and biking routes very much nearby – again, probably no need to point out the splendid North Yorkshire scenery… It's only a few minutes' drive to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and to yet more hikes and bikes in Dalby Forest. Amenities include a toilet and shower block, a washing machine, and slides and swings for the kids; a small charge applies for using the showers and the washing machine. Starter packs with wood offcuts, small logs, kindling and firelighters for firepits and barbecues are available to buy on arrival. Please be aware that there are no bins on site, so you'll be asked to take all rubbish away with you. There's also a chemical waste disposal point on site. And finally, as this is a peaceful and hidden-away site, do look at online maps to be sure of where you're going: it's a quiet spot and doesn't shout out its location.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice quiet little site situated off the beaten track. The access road is fairly narrow and a little bumpy but we had no problem getting there. The site is a grass site with electrical hook up. There are showers/toilets/sink with a drainer/ washing machine and waste disposal facilities (not for rubbish though, that goes home with you). The showers require you to 'feed the meter' with 50p coins. I only used one per shower (so, get some 50p's before you go). The site is run by a very nice lady (Lorraine) who looks after the place well. It is around 4 miles to Pickering (10 mins in car) and Whitby and Scarborough are around 25 miles away. Certainly would return here in future.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Peaceful location Level well kept pitches

Disliked: A long way up a bumpy track, 15 mins drive from any pubs, shops or amenities Scruffy and insufficient loos/ showers Unhelpful and rather rude host

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Absolutely terrible couple, attacked and accused one of my regular campers of moving their chairs when it was actually myself because they pitched in such a way that they blocked a pitch either side of them. When a fellow camper jumped in to tell them who moved them there was no apology whatsoever. All the complaints they have said are clearly pointed out on my site info. They wanted the site to themselves, couples like this make me wonder why I bother. Not to mention letting there dog run amock fouling everywhere.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The peaceful location, friendly owner, great selection of toys for the kids and great to be allowed to play ball games on site too.

Disliked: Great stay but I think a prior email (or in the booking confirmation email) with instructions to drive along the road a little further to see the directions for the pitch would have been helpful. Also the toilets/showers could do with a deep clean.

From the manager: Thank you. Please appreciate these are basically public toilets and I feel I'm on top of them moat of the time.

Route directions

Please note that YO18 7JW is the best postcode, but when your satnav says you have reached your destination you should carry on up the road for half a mile and then bear right, heading over the speed bumps. This will take you directly to the site, which is located at the very end of the road. The owner may not be on the site all of the time. If they are not there upon your arrival, please do not turn into the wooden drive gates but continue along the road to campsite gate where there will be a board with instructions on.

Local attractions

There's quite a bit to do in the old market town of Pickering, a four- or five-mile walk away: as well as plenty of shops and its Monday market, people also come to see its castle, the Beck Isle Museum and the medieval wall paintings at Pickering Church. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world, trainspotters) starts from Pickering on its beaut run through the moors to Grosmont. Haugh Rigg Farm has peeps pitching up in an area with plenty of coastal opps too: Flamingo Land is eight miles away, Helmsley 18 and Scarborough 20; if you're off to the coast you'll also likely like a look around Dracula, James Cook and goth centre Whitby.
