General

  • Well-maintained park in the Vale of York
  • Near James Herriot and Brontë country in Thirsk and Haworth
  • Private fishing lake, nature trails and heated amenities block

Set in the Vale of York near the market town of Thirsk (Darrowby in the James Herriot books), Otterington Park is a place to please all creatures great and small.

Grownups can angle for a spot to land several fishy types at the park’s private one-acre fishing lake, while tiddlers can caper along the nature walks laid on exclusively for Otterington Park fry of all sizes. Then try a tramp along the stream or breaking out the hard-boiled eggs in one of the picnic areas: the park covers 25 acres so even solitary types should be able to find a secluded spot to sink down in.

The site has a heated amenities block with ladies’ and gents’ toilets, shower rooms, a bathroom and disabled facilities. There’s also a parent and baby washroom, launderette and a play area for the tadpoles on site.

I enjoy touring all over the country and I've got to say this is possibly one of the best sites that I have stayed at. Firstly the wardens, Mark and Janice were very welcoming upon arrival, friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The site is very well kept and an ideal size for families. There are also some stunning nature walks around the site. I will definately be returning before the end of the season.

Far too many rules. The warden totally ignored us the whole of our stay more interested in the people in the seasoned pitches. I know it's holiday time but site over run with children running around from 0700-2300 load music. No shops near by. Definitely would not return. Too many trains day & night

From the manager...

Good Afternoon

Sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay at Otterington Park. The park was completely full the weekend of your stay and you had been put on a pitch next to the play park. Admittedly in the height of season and with numerous children embarking on their school holidays this was not an ideal pitch for a couple.

We accept that you may not wish to visit us again, am I right in thinking that you are the couple that arrived late due to your long drive and Janice (the warden) re-assured you that this was fine as long as you arrived safely? As I was saying, may I, if it isn't impertinent of me; give you a little advice when choosing your next destination. Look at maps and information of the parks location and check to see if the there is a tick in the box marked 'shop' for nearby amenities when using Pitchup. Consider that during school holidays there may be a large number of children on a family park. When making a future booking add a note or contact the park and ask for a quiet area if at all possible.

I think most parks will have rules, we prefer to think of them as guidelines which are in place to benefit and promote the enjoyment of all.

Kind regards
Otterington Park

A very tidy clean camping site. Toilets and showers very clean. The site is secure because of the barriers on exit and entrance.
There is a railway line goes past the site but that is not a problem and there is a noticeable lack of traffic noise which was great. We had a very nice stay and would go again.

Liked the easy access to the Park (no twisty and narrow country roads to negotiate), good asphalt entry road and paths around the pitches, flat and level pitch, spotless facilities (no queues at the times I visited), good enough value wi-fi (at £5 for 2 days), excellent phone signal and TV reception, good off-lead dog field, nice walks direct from the park, practical common sense rules, and the children's play area seemed popular. There is some railway noise from the nearby main line but nothing to worry 'townies' like us. All in all, highly recommended.

Keep on that road for half a mile into the village of Topcliffe, and bear right over the River Swale bridge, past the church on your left. Turn left opposite the Angel Inn, signposted to Northallerton. Travel approximately 8 miles along the A167 to South Otterington. Local attractions

Use Otterington Park as a base to explore the Yorkshire moors and dales: there are local rights of way within a short distance of the park and walking maps available from reception.

Brontë and James Herriot country are both nearby for hikes, cycling or horseback cantering; the James Herriot visitor attraction and museum is in nearby Thirsk.

From Northallerton, take a quick train trip to the historic city of York, a must-see for history and culture types with its Minster, medieval city walls and National Rail Museum (even the kids can be persuaded to come along for a day trip once you tell them about the Jorvik Viking Museum).

The spa town of Harrogate is easily reachable too, as is Durham, another must-see with its Norman cathedral and eleventh century castle, both designated as a World Heritage Site. There are Park and Ride schemes at both Durham and York if you’d rather take the car.

The county of Yorkshire is history and heritage rich, with castles, country houses, stately homes and abbeys abounding: Castle Howard, Helmsley Castle, Newby Hall and The Abbey of Byland are only a few of the time-travelling treats on offer.

If you’re more geared towards family fun, oodles of options are in Yorkshire, from play centres in Northallerton to the Sion Birds of Prey Centre in Thirsk. Let the little monkeys swing free at Aerial Extreme on the Camp Hill Estate in Bedale, peer at the meerkats in Thorpe Perrow Gardens, or go loopy at the extreme rides of Flamingo Land.

And no trip to Yorkshire would be complete without a trip to the seaside: scare the kids silly by ghoulishly relating Dracula’s tale to them over fish and chips on the beach at Whitby, cruise along to coastal fishing villages such as Staithes and Runswick Bay, or arrow along to Robin Hood’s Bay just an hour’s drive from Otterington.

The kids can paddle in the beck at the Falling Foss waterfall before behaving very nicely during a cream tea in the acclaimed tea garden at the waterfall’s top, then get scared silly all over again on the Robin Hood’s Bay Ghost Walk telling the story of the bay’s smugglers, sailors, myths and folklore (details from the Robin Hood’s Bay Visitor Centre or Whitby's tourist information centre).
