  • Luxury site with handcrafted tree lodges

Well. We don’t quite know where to start with the top options abounding at luxury sustainable site The Bivouac near Masham in the Yorkshire Dales. Outdoor hot tub – tick. Handcrafted and round-wood luxury timber tree lodges, each with mezzanine sleeping, a double bed behind a curtain and a woodburning stove with range – tick. Meadow yurts with meals delivered direct to the door – tick tick and another, very big, tick.

All these ticky things – and the café, but we’ll get to that – are on The Bivouac’s rustic site in the Swinton Park Estate and close to Druids’ Temple, a well-known local landmark and nineteenth century folly built by local writer William Danby as his answer to Stonehenge.

The six shacks are tucked into woodland with views of the surrounding valley and moors; the eight yurts, each on their own individual wooden platform, are on the hillside close to The Bivouac’s main building, with reception, loos and showers. Both types of accommodation come with hand-picked and upcycled items from vintage crockery to antique rocking chairs. Bed linen is provided; please bring your own towels.

The Bivouac’s café also deserves a huge tick: it has a family den underneath leading to a walled garden, views down to the valley from the patio, and is open late on Friday and Saturday nights for meals and drinks. And the sign leading to it says ‘muddy boots welcome’, which is obv the best type of café ever. Tick…
