General

  • Seventeenth century inn on site
  • Easily reachable from the A1
  • Walks starting directly from the site: route copies available

Here’s a site you’ll be happy to swan around: it’s in a hidden spot in the Yorkshire Dales and there’s a seventeenth century inn on site dishing up home-cooked food among views of the moors and the Vale of York. Hurrah, hooray and pass the Black Sheep bitter.

No eating like a bird either: the Black Swan food is properly portioned with plenty to pick from, and there are several veggie options as well as themed evenings such as steak nights (occasionally with non-local samplings like springbok or ostrich).

The bar meals are served at lunchtime, with a bistro in the evenings and a roast lunch on Sundays with locally sourced meat and home made desserts, all with local and guest ales to wash it down.

Getting swanwards is also simple: the pub is easily reached from the A1 and is in the old village of Fearby two miles from the market town of Masham. Once there, there are two walks starting directly from the site; ask staff for copies of the routes.

Black Swan guests have access to a shower and toliet block; wifi is available on site.

Location very nice. Electricity kept tripping but the owner was helpful in getting us up and running again.

    Disliked:

Toilet and shower block poor. No heating and run down. Needs money spending on it to bring it up to the standard that people expect. Just because people are caravanning or camping doesn't mean they want to rough it. We've been to some excellent sites where the standard of the amenities blocks are five star and for the same price we paid here. This is what most people want nowadays. Such a shame.

Good but not value for money. 18/03/2018

Nice quiet site with lovely views of the Dales. The pub is good with nice ales, a log burning stove and good (but not cheap) food. 1.5 walk to Masham via the road (not ideal with 2 dogs) but if wet and boggy there is no other option.

    Disliked:

Parking on a slope. We were in a motor home and got stuck in mud on arrival then stuck in snow when leaving. Thankfully the friendly chap in the neighbouring caravan had a 4 x 4 so towed us out.
The outfits did seem quite close to one another; a bit pricey too and free wifi was only for 30 minutes after which you had to pay extra.
No bus service from the village.

We were lucky and got a half price deal on our pitch which meant we only paid £33 for three nights. The location was excellent for visiting the dales and easy to find. There were walks straight from the site and wonderful views.
Pitches were a decent size and well drained although somewhat sloped. On check in we were also given a £5 food voucher for each night of our stay which we saved and used on the last day of our stay. Food in the pub was excellent although I would recommend that you book as on the Sunday we went up for something to eat to be turned away as they were full.

    Disliked:

The toilet block was not the cleanest it could be and the windows would not shut which meant it was always cold. Added to that there was no accessible shower and no seats in the shower area which made getting a shower for someone with a disability very difficult.
The site at the bottom seemed quite waterlogged and the roadway was slick in the rain which made it quite difficult to drive on with our van which kept slipping.
We were also quite disappointing by being turned away on the Sunday as we had previously told the staff that we were planning on eating there that night. We went in at 6.30 and some of the tables weren't booked till 7.30! We also asked if we could eat in the bar but the lady on the desk rather curtly said "No". The following night someone else was offered this option!

Local attractions

Those Black Swan walks first: the pub team has put together details of two local walks direct from your pitch, including a five-mile trek to the nineteenth century folly The Druid’s Temple, built by a local squire as a mini Stonehenge.

There are walks for all levels in this part of the Yorkshire Dales: if you’re feeling fit, you can stride off into the moorland; if not, ask about the easy riverside strolls nearby. Most Ordnance Survey paths around here are accessible but some aren't well-used, so hone your navigational skills before setting off.

Masham is easily reached by foot and has Georgian architecture, two breweries and one of the biggest markets in the area (on Wednesdays and Saturdays); bike hire is available here too.

The Black Swan can be used as a base for beetling around the Yorkshire moors whatever your activity level after a few Yorkshire ales the night before: high ropes adventure courses are at nearby Aerial Extreme, clay pigeon shooting within a mile and off-road 4X4 driving/quad biking nearby for the energetic.

The 18-mile route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or exploring the many nearby market towns are topping options for the more moderately minded.

Two ancient abbeys, Jervaulx and Fountains, are within a quick drive and there are many museums scattered about North Yorkshire covering all eras. Eden Camp, where you can be hit with the sights, sounds and smells of World War II, is at Malton, with more war history at the Yorkshire Air Museum in York.

You may of course have no say in deciding your activity levels/options if the kids are with you; if so, you’ll probably end up at Lightwater Valley eight miles away, home of the country’s first Angry Birds activity park and with a farm park and falconry. And even culture resistant kids should like the Beamish living museum in Co Durham with its regular events and costumed guides.

Further afield, York and Whitby are both about an hour’s drive away, and the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey are also reachable for day trips.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (3.3 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey (8.9 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (12.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Braithwaite Hall (5.1 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (8.9 miles)
