General

  • Seventeenth century inn on site
  • Easily reachable from the A1
  • Walks starting directly from the site: route copies available

Here’s a site you’ll be happy to swan around: it’s in a hidden spot in the Yorkshire Dales and there’s a seventeenth century inn on site dishing up home-cooked food among views of the moors and the Vale of York. Hurrah, hooray and pass the Black Sheep bitter.

No eating like a bird either: the Black Swan food is properly portioned with plenty to pick from, and there are several veggie options as well as themed evenings such as steak nights (occasionally with non-local samplings like springbok or ostrich).

The bar meals are served at lunchtime, with a bistro in the evenings and a roast lunch on Sundays with locally sourced meat and home made desserts, all with local and guest ales to wash it down.

Getting swanwards is also simple: the pub is easily reached from the A1 and is in the old village of Fearby two miles from the market town of Masham. Once there, there are two walks starting directly from the site; ask staff for copies of the routes.

Black Swan guests have access to a shower and toliet block; wifi is available on site.

Location was great and view from the top of the field beautiful. The showers were a bit tired but at least the showers were hot.

    Disliked:

The electricity kept tripping off and the drinking water had a strange taste.

Awful site, facilities not good and rubbish bins overflowing 18/06/2018

  • Liked:

The bar man serving in the actually pub - he was a gem. The rest of the staff that we saw seem a bit miserable.

    Disliked:

The toiler block was horrible. Both the men and the ladies had a toilet' out of order' and the rubbish bin in the ladies was overflowing . The waste bins for the normal waste where also overflowing. You get a £5.00 voucher towards dinner - obviously hoping you will use the restaurant. I had steak and ale pie with veg - the pastry was like leather but rest okay. Hubby had lamb which he said was lovely.
This had very little for families - we are a mature couple on our own but I would not recommend this site to any one. We paid £25 for one night. At least the electric hook up worked. I have use far better sites for half the price. The only good thing was it had the pub so you got to chat with people. It is shocking. value for money and we will not be going back.

A small site but with everything you need AND a lovely pub on site too 14/06/2018

We liked the peaceful location and the fact the site is in the grounds of a pub / restaurant. In addition take -away food is available, including full English breakfast. This small site has all the necessary facilities, loos, showers, fresh, grey and black water points, electric hookups. The surroundings are beautiful and there are plenty of things to see and do nearby.

    Disliked:

Nothing major at all. Facilities are a little worn; one gents cubicle was out of order. Take ramps as this is a sloping site.

Site was ok, pathway to shower block and bar. Nice bar country feel. Food looked nice, though didn't eat there. £5 voucher given for evening meal.

    Disliked:

Shower/toilet block needs urgent attention. Very dated, cold and unwelcoming. Owner could of been little more helpful, showing where bins were and chemical block. Which was up 4 dangerous steps no handrail (risk assessment there)

Local attractions

Those Black Swan walks first: the pub team has put together details of two local walks direct from your pitch, including a five-mile trek to the nineteenth century folly The Druid’s Temple, built by a local squire as a mini Stonehenge.

There are walks for all levels in this part of the Yorkshire Dales: if you’re feeling fit, you can stride off into the moorland; if not, ask about the easy riverside strolls nearby. Most Ordnance Survey paths around here are accessible but some aren't well-used, so hone your navigational skills before setting off.

Masham is easily reached by foot and has Georgian architecture, two breweries and one of the biggest markets in the area (on Wednesdays and Saturdays); bike hire is available here too.

The Black Swan can be used as a base for beetling around the Yorkshire moors whatever your activity level after a few Yorkshire ales the night before: high ropes adventure courses are at nearby Aerial Extreme, clay pigeon shooting within a mile and off-road 4X4 driving/quad biking nearby for the energetic.

The 18-mile route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or exploring the many nearby market towns are topping options for the more moderately minded.

Two ancient abbeys, Jervaulx and Fountains, are within a quick drive and there are many museums scattered about North Yorkshire covering all eras. Eden Camp, where you can be hit with the sights, sounds and smells of World War II, is at Malton, with more war history at the Yorkshire Air Museum in York.

You may of course have no say in deciding your activity levels/options if the kids are with you; if so, you’ll probably end up at Lightwater Valley eight miles away, home of the country’s first Angry Birds activity park and with a farm park and falconry. And even culture resistant kids should like the Beamish living museum in Co Durham with its regular events and costumed guides.

Further afield, York and Whitby are both about an hour’s drive away, and the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey are also reachable for day trips.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (3.3 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey (8.9 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (12.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Braithwaite Hall (5.1 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (8.9 miles)
