General

  • Seventeenth century inn on site
  • Easily reachable from the A1
  • Walks starting directly from the site: route copies available

Here’s a site you’ll be happy to swan around: it’s in a hidden spot in the Yorkshire Dales and there’s a seventeenth century inn on site dishing up home-cooked food among views of the moors and the Vale of York. Hurrah, hooray and pass the Black Sheep bitter.

No eating like a bird either: the Black Swan food is properly portioned with plenty to pick from, and there are several veggie options as well as themed evenings such as steak nights (occasionally with non-local samplings like springbok or ostrich).

The bar meals are served at lunchtime, with a bistro in the evenings and a roast lunch on Sundays with locally sourced meat and home made desserts, all with local and guest ales to wash it down.

Getting swanwards is also simple: the pub is easily reached from the A1 and is in the old village of Fearby two miles from the market town of Masham. Once there, there are two walks starting directly from the site; ask staff for copies of the routes.

Black Swan guests have access to a shower and toliet block; wifi is available on site.

The food was home cooked and excellent. Really friendly staff, no hassle pitching. Good facilities, nice hot showers.

    Disliked:

Couple of the gents cubicles seemed to be out of order. A plastic chair in the toilet block would have made changing much easier, especially to take off footware to stop grass in the showers, and to place clothes on.

    Nice quiet site.
Pub is exceptional, good array of beer choices including Black Sheep & Theakston's as you'd expect.
Food was 10/10, excellent service, presentation & menu.
Ensure you book especially for a Saturday night.

    Disliked:

Showers & toilets need an upgrade, tired & dated. Still clean & functional but shortage of hand wash & toilet rolls by Sunday.

    Beautiful scenary.

    Disliked:

The owner was obnoxious on a number of occasions to our group - mixture of caravans & tents. Told us he hated tents & if he could ban them he would! We were 'told off' for not reporting to reception on arrival & that we weren't the only ones camping.
We asked if there were any local takeaways that delivered food? To which he replied, none would deliver, the only competition he had was a pub on the other side of the village which he bought & closed down. He suggested that we could order food to take away from his restaurant, fish & chips etc. A member of our group asked if they made pizzas to which he replied pizza's were too "crass" for his restaurant as they were catering for more top end clientele!!
We ate in the restaurant the previous night, the food was OK but well overpriced & I can confirm in no way high end! LOL.
Clear to see he is very money oriented. The shower block & toilets are in dia need of upgrade / refurbished as was the washing up facilities.
The chemical waste was situated at the top of the campsite, accessible over uneven ground & up 4 steps (not ideal). The bins used by the pub & restaurant were also the bins used for the campsite. They were revolting.
The campsite was over crowded, motor homes & tents being situated next to the track.
    Lack of electric hook ups.
    Pitches on sloping ground.

    pub looked nice

    Disliked:

site on a large slope. pulled in went to bar to get our pitch they thought we were in a motor home, not In a tent as we had booked. We were shown to the pitch which was on the crest of the hill, and were told that cars would likely be parked alongside our tent near the pub. View from the pitch was very bad, so we decided not to stop and went and informed the staff that it wasn't for us and no questions were asked about any problems or how it might be solved, just a simple ok and that was it. Total waste of money and a spoiled weekend.

Local attractions

Those Black Swan walks first: the pub team has put together details of two local walks direct from your pitch, including a five-mile trek to the nineteenth century folly The Druid’s Temple, built by a local squire as a mini Stonehenge.

There are walks for all levels in this part of the Yorkshire Dales: if you’re feeling fit, you can stride off into the moorland; if not, ask about the easy riverside strolls nearby. Most Ordnance Survey paths around here are accessible but some aren't well-used, so hone your navigational skills before setting off.

Masham is easily reached by foot and has Georgian architecture, two breweries and one of the biggest markets in the area (on Wednesdays and Saturdays); bike hire is available here too.

The Black Swan can be used as a base for beetling around the Yorkshire moors whatever your activity level after a few Yorkshire ales the night before: high ropes adventure courses are at nearby Aerial Extreme, clay pigeon shooting within a mile and off-road 4X4 driving/quad biking nearby for the energetic.

The 18-mile route of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway or exploring the many nearby market towns are topping options for the more moderately minded.

Two ancient abbeys, Jervaulx and Fountains, are within a quick drive and there are many museums scattered about North Yorkshire covering all eras. Eden Camp, where you can be hit with the sights, sounds and smells of World War II, is at Malton, with more war history at the Yorkshire Air Museum in York.

You may of course have no say in deciding your activity levels/options if the kids are with you; if so, you’ll probably end up at Lightwater Valley eight miles away, home of the country’s first Angry Birds activity park and with a farm park and falconry. And even culture resistant kids should like the Beamish living museum in Co Durham with its regular events and costumed guides.

Further afield, York and Whitby are both about an hour’s drive away, and the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey are also reachable for day trips.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (3.3 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey (8.9 miles)
  • Richmond Castle (12.4 miles)

  • Braithwaite Hall (5.1 miles)
  • Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Water Garden (8.9 miles)
