Midsummer Caravan and Camping: Site entrance

General

  • Well-maintained adults-only site in scenic Yorkshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from local village; 35 to Scarborough; 45 to York
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of the North York Moors

‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but hols at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at the adults-only site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton.

This is peaceful camping at its best. Not only is it in scenic countryside, it’s a total kid-free zone – there’s a strict over-21s policy, so days spent unwinding won’t be interrupted by hyperactive kids getting underfoot, and all that green space will be left blessedly open for quiet contemplation.

Dog parents, on the other hand, can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (though no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in.

If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

Please note

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Guests under the age of 21 are not allowed on site.

The toilet facilities are closed until Monday 17 May 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The shower facilities are closed until Monday 17 May 2021. Guests will need to use their own facilities.

Electricity is metered on site at £0.18 per kWh and must be paid at check-out.

    Small site, quiet, relaxed atmosphere.
Site owners very helpful, we had a problem with the water pump on our caravan & then loaned us a spare one they had.
    Good dog walk area.
    Close to Thornton le Dale.
    Facilities closed, so can't comment.

The water dind't taste very nice, but this could be because it hasn't been used much due to the lockdown.

Sorry you did not like the natural spring water. We do advise everyone that it is not like chlorinated service provided water, but at least it is all natural.

Everything place was scenic clean and tidy and adult only so a peaceful break away from the kids. The lady that runs it is amazing and has lots of local knowledge if your stuck for things to do they also have a small golf course for fun that you can borrow putters and balls for, 30 min drive to coast. Beautiful loop trail in thornton le dale just up the road from camp as well. Cant comment on toilets closed due to covid restrictions the pitch was nice and flat with a good ground for the tent pegs to go into. Great bank holiday weekend away.

Great location, easy to travel to York,Whitby, or Scarbados. The owner Alison is very friendly and helpful, and very proud of her lovely little campsite. She even offered to help us put up our giant tent.Thornton le Dale is a beautiful little village about a mile away and Malton is about 10 minutes away by car if you need provisions. There is a Morrison’s and an Asda in Malton.
The campsite is adults only and very peaceful during the day.We had a very relaxing stay, and we were even buzzed by Tom Cruise in his helicopter while he was filming close by.Great value for money campsite and we will definitely be back.

Local attractions

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon.

There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection (plenty of showman’s engines, not so much parsley or sage…).

For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of the hol touring stately piles: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site.

As there are no kids to take care of, the grownups can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes away) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes from base) – and making time for a tipple or two – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.

Must see

  • Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo (3.0 miles)
  • North Yorkshire Moors Railway (3.4 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (5.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (7.6 miles)
  • Nunnington Hall (9.8 miles)
